ITV Executives Reportedly 'Furious' Over Rumored Apple TV Name Change

Mirror.co.uk reports that executives of UK television network ITV are "furious" over rumors that Apple will be changing the name of its Apple TV set-top box product to "iTV" as part of a major revamp later this year. Despite the fact that claim is only a rumor and that Apple has refused to comment on the issue, ITV is gearing up for a fight.
But ITV bosses are furious and meeting with lawyers this week to stop the move in the UK.

The broadcaster, who owns the trademark to the name ITV in Britain, will also weigh up its options on a global ban.

Noting problems with Apple's new iPhone 4, one "insider" at the network worries about possible damage to its reputation should Apple make the name change.
A channel insider said: "You only have to look at recent problems with the iPhone 4 to see not everything Apple produces is gold dust. We all take our ITV brand very seriously and we'll do everything in our power to protect it."

Apple initially revealed the Apple TV as the "iTV" in September 2006 at its now-traditional fall music-focused event, but changed the name to "Apple TV" by the time it officially launched at Macworld San Francisco in January 2007.

Keep it at apple tv. When apple throws i's in front of everything it just sounds stupid it my opinion.
 
bear in mind this was taken from the mirror. Since when did they publish facts? I'd like to see this verified by other papers
 
Protect the brand? Jesus ITV needs brand promotion, it's a useless tv station, if I was those execs I'd piggyback the media attention, not give out.

ITV is a horrible, sub tabloid-quality channel. They should be honoured to have any affiliation with Apple.

Exactly what I was about to say. The Mirror is not a serious news paper. Usually they just rant about immigrants and print fatalistic rubbish. they are a joke in the UK.

Page two this C**p. its not in the slightest bit credible.
 
I fully expected this and rightly so! Apple would have no quarms if it was the other way around.
 
Well, if I know British legal culture (and I think I do) they'll have meeting after meeting, waste hour upon hour, only to decide that there's enough difference between "ITV" and "iTV" to warrant having any suit tossed out. In the end, ITV won't want to spend the money to pursue it.

I don't think the iPhone 4 comment was particularly worthwhile or called for; I'm not sure how you can call a product a failure when people like me are waiting two and three weeks to get one.
