As has been said before by other posters from the UK, take this with the proverbial pinch of salt. Unless this is verified by a more newsworthy source like FT, Times, Guardian, etc then it's probably nothing. The Mirror is basically repackaged toilet paper over here in the UK - only read by people with an IQ barely into double figures!

1) ITV is not exactly a high quality broadcaster. Even Channel 5 has better quality programming on it.

2) Apple have enough money to just buy ITV. And then close it all down, which is for the best.

Not sure why they just don't stick with Apple TV, unless of course they have plans down the road for this thing to take over cable and movie rentals/on-demand, just like iTunes did.

And I'm pretty sure ITV doesn't have a case here... wouldn't you think Apple's lawyers would have made sure the name iTV was locked up back in 2006 when this thing first launched?

The whole issue is Apple has become so innovative in so many ways, that they're now being sued for things they created the idea for years ago!

A channel insider said: "You only have to look at recent problems with the iPhone 4 to see not everything Apple produces is gold dust. We all take our ITV brand very seriously and we'll do everything in our power to protect it."

This coming from the people who broadcast the ********* channels in the uk...(ok apart from sky1)

Sounds like an onion news story to me.

Broadcasting company rearing up to sue apple over rumoured product.

Smart move from Apple. Again.

Now somebody else is making a fuss/drawing attention to a new Apple product and all they have to do is switch to a different name the very last moment just before court comes in.

+1 for Apple's marketing. Smart people work there.

I'm guessing to tie it in with their "Lifestyle Line", all of which start with "i" - iPod, iPhone, iPad and now iTV. Doubly so if it migrates to iOS.

It might also be an attempt to distance it from comparison to "Google TV".

I couldn't care less about the ********** name! Just make the device, goddamnit! Been waiting for YEARS.

Sue :apple: for quadrillion billions of millions ...

This is modern nowadays ... :D

Apple is pretty quick to sick its lawyers to anyone who had used the word pod in their products and to many i-names as well. I see little reason why itv executives should lay down on this just because its apple.

Given that its a rumor, I wonder if this news story is really meant a shot across apple's bow to preemptively ensure the name isn't changed.

LOL. Just like iPad and iPhone, this will be settled.

“You should either go with your code name, like we did with the Mac, or you should pick a code name quite a bit -- a real name quite a bit different than your code name, so I'll probably stumble and call this iTV five times today by mistake.”

- Steve Jobs, Macworld ’07

Sounds like the Apple TV project was put-on the back burner for the iPad and has now been taken off the shelf, and Jobs is directly overseeing this one.

What I find hilarious is that it is just a rumor.

Hey. I heard a rumor that Apple will be producing a new desktop computer with plenty of space. They will be calling it the Big Mac.

"Oh no! Somone call McDonalds! They have gotta know!!!"

:D

I am sure Apple already had this trademarked long ago anyway, and has figured out the legal ramifications. The Apple TV has been under the radar its entire existence anyway. This could be a lot of free and valuable press if Apple attempts a product relaunch under this name.

Keep it at apple tv. When apple throws i's in front of everything it just sounds stupid it my opinion.

Exactly, I get it that the "i" brand is worth a lot to Apple, but having virtually every product beginning with i just gets a bit annoying. Personally I prefer :apple:tv, for the reason that ITV is a TV channel.
