If Steve Jobs were alive and healthy, we'd probably see it released in 2014... and iPhones would launch in June.

Yeah, just like when the Mac Pro had constant updates under Steve, and there wasn't more than a 12 month gap between iPhone releases (except the 4 and 4S, of course). Apple's gone downhill since TC took over.

Ever hear of iPhone 6? New iPads?

iWatch or not, apple has nothing to worry about.

Doesn't matter. If the shareholders aren't happy, Apple's stocks will sink like a stone and that puts the company in a bad position regardless of good sales. I agree, if the iWatch is not released this year...Apple will be seriously behind the game. But I certainly don't think it'll be the end of them! :D

Contradiction

Tim Cook said last year that Apple would innovate "throughout 2014". However, there's no significant innovation in terms of hardware. That fact hints that the development of iWatch delayed.

I hope that delay will bring us a true game-changing product.

I'm not sure you are full aware what innovation means. Apple has announced -and in the mean time released (to developers)- a number of very innovative solutions in terms of software.

In addition we do not yet know the full extent of new features that the new iPhone will bring and what other hardware updates Apple has in store this year.

Like many you seem to equate "innovation" only to new products such as an iWatch, whereas real innovation occurs or better said is created on several levels: incremental innovations (e.g. improvements to materials (sapphire) or hardware functions (camera), new functions in software, business or earnings models and hardware) and disruptive innovations (e.g. new product categories such as iPad).

Waterproof accessories exist.
Curved Displays exist.
Battery operated devices exists.

I think Apple has problems with the yield.
You have to consider that they have to produce millions.
It's not like a luxury watch that gets sold 50 times per year.

The delay cannot be caused by design issues, because the design has been fixed month ago. You have to make contracts, allocate production capacities at suppliers and monitor batches for variations and throughput.

This is surely happening for month now. They is no production problem, maybe a yield or quality issue. The production planning had to be finalized way before now.

Yep. a new os and an iphone is predicable. You can set your calendar to it. Apple these days seems to be about updating some kit thats already out and not updating others. Apple TV. How long have we heard about a breaking new Apple TV, it hasn't happened yet (although you could argue that the iwatch rumours are diverting the eyes from that and the big 2014 thing will be a new Apple TV).

Yeah exactly. We have 2 events left for the year so I'm hoping we'll have Apple TV / Wearable news at one of them .

I still do not get the point for SmartWatch. I want to watch that last at least half year of battery life.I'll probably buy iWatch it got that battery life.
I can do everything a SmartWatch can do and I .not bothered by having taking out my phone. I have enough of stuff needed to be charged every night, I do not want charge one more stuff before i go to bed and I do not want my watch out if battery during the day.

Just so. If Apple can pull that one off, they will have a revolutionary product in this space!

iWatch or not, apple has nothing to worry about.

If all we get this fall are new iPhones and new iPads (even if the iPhone has a larger screen) the stock will take a nosedive and the media meme of Apple not innovating will be in full force once again. Especially with Cook promising new product categories this year.

If Apple plans to sell it this year, they need it on the shelves by Thanksgiving. Otherwise, I anticipate a "slow burn" introduction. Announce the product in the Sept-Nov timeframe with a release date of early 2015, and release the SDK to devs. This will allow hype to build, and knock competitor's smartwatch sales on its ass. It will also allow Apple's newly hired engineers and execs to finalize features and marketing plan.

To be fair to the guy, he's usually right -- and probably the most reliable Apple analyst around at the moment. It's also very possible that earlier this year Apple was planning to start manufacturing in July and a few months later decided that what they had isn't quite good enough and needed to cook a little longer (edit: no pun intended... seriously).

This is the first major new category of product from Apple since the iPad, and you only get one chance to make a first impression. They can't just release a healthband or notification pusher for your wrist; they need to bring something to the table that blows Android Wear away.

If they release something that's merely "okay" rather than category-defining, we'll have a good 12-18 months of "Apple is doomed" stories from the media.

exactly! I'd rather they wait and not pull a samsung by releasing garbage. look at the current smart watches - they're horrible.

oh - really? how many years after Microsoft shipped the first tablet did Apple release theirs? a decade? Apple won't release it until its ready. Steve Jobs wouldn't allow it. He'd hold it back and make them fix the issues - seems like Tim is doing the same exact thing (assuming this analysts is correct)

I'll be surprised if it happens by November, frankly. They are just now hiring people from Nike and TAG. Do we really think they would be bringing in these skillsets so late in the game?

All the doubt, fear and worry will fall away as soon as the event invitation is released featuring a '6' somewhere on it (for iPhone 6) and the tagline: "This is well worth a watch."

:D

Exactly. The only thing Steve might have done differently is tease new categories. He wouldn't have needed to. He would have convinced us Apple was fine with the Retina MacBook Pro, super thin iMac and all-new Mac Pro.

There goes that exciting new thing for 2014 cook talked about.

Yes and what happened to his promise to release new products "throughout 2014". It's half way through the year and they've released exactly zero new products so far with apparently nothing on the horizon until Sept again when presumably everything will come out within a short 2 month period.

Somebody from the SEC should look into this as I believe it's a deliberate attempt by Cook to mislead investors and keep the stock price up. I'm fairly sure that's illegal.

Grow up.

Like Apple need to mislead investors over a product.

Did it occur to you that maybe it was on track for a release in 2014 when he spoke about new products in 2014, but due to production/R&D/whatever, it simply became impossible to meet that initial expectation?

Also, you're assuming that "New" products means something they haven't released before (iWatch), as opposed to a "new" iPhone model.

Seems odd. It's a retail imperative (yes, even for Apple) that holiday products are available BEFORE Black Friday. November production start is cutting it awfully close, esp. in light of Cook's self-admitted botching of the updated 27" iMac. If the iWatch is Apple's next big thing it must either be available in realistic quantity, not 5,000 units and "sold out" come back in January folks, or it needs to release it in the spring like the original iPad when quantity can be more plentiful.

But that brings us to another issue, if the iWatch isn't announced then what is the new product category Cook promised?

My gut tells me this story is incorrect & that Apple's watch will be announced in Oct & launched by mid-November.

Actually yes, when they did this they were clearly trying to halt a drifting downward stock & stories about how Apple/Tim Cook can't come up with a new product. It wasn't said to tease Apple fans.

But if Apple misses it's a black eye on it & Cook. It's why Apple usually doesn't talk about new products, even vaguely, until release us certain. BTW Cook explicitly said new categories, not just new products. That eliminates updates of existing lines.

Revolutionary or not... Until I see the iWatch... I do not think smart watch are useful... I also do think think iWatch will last as long as my watch...I just brought 300 dollar Boss watch and my last fossil watch's battery last forever

The iWatch will be released this year, PERIOD.

If Apple does not release the iWatch this year AAPL will plunge and it will be a bloodbath, Tim knows it, every serious shareholder knows it, and they have been hyping this whole thing. There is not the slightest doubt about this 2014 release.

This could be a very calculated movement for creating both desire and expectation by selling extremely few units first, while the secret keeps secret until the D day too.

I believe that if Apple doesn't release a new category of product in 2014 Tim Cook will start losing credibility. He has been saying that Apple "Will release new products in 2012, 2013, 2014". Granted, in 2012 he just said we have exciting things coming. But for the next two years he specifically mentioned new products. By the way I don't count the new Mac Pro as it was just a redesign.

Up until now there's has been nothing new. If we don't get something in 2014 I think people will stop listening to him and his empty promises. He will take a hit to his credibility.
