You can. Select one, then look around in the menues. There's an ignore update option. Also, I don't know what you're complaining about, my G3 233MHz handles 10.1 ok.

thanks for the tip on making updates inactive. that was getting kinda annoying!

and let's not get into speed flame wars. perception of speed is what everyone starts arguing about. 10.1 on a g3 233 maybe fine for you but it's not for alot of people. i know 10.1 on my 400mhz lombard isn't tolerable for me and i'll probably be retiring the laptop in the next few months as i complete my migration to os x.

10.2 Wishlist

Gimme PDF speed! This is a joke right Apple?! OS X uses PDF as its display technology but scrolling through a PDF in Acrobat or even Preview is incredibly slow! How did that happen?! (Sure blame Adobe for Acrobat's slow performance but what about Preview? It's still tons slower than browsing the same PDF in Windows XP.)

Finder cleanup: there's still a lot of little niggling things that need to be cleaned up. Refresh could still be a little quicker. Sometimes when you "cleanup" a window, icons are still in the wrong position, sometimes cropped up near the top of the window or off the side. Like I said, little things, but things that 9 revisions of Classic took care of in the previous OS and should be cleaned up in OS X. (I mean come, this isn't Microsoft! Apple is known for paying attention to the details!)

Scheduled startup/wake and shutdown: There used to be an option in the old Energy Saver control panel where we could tell the computer to turn on or wake up at a specified time. I used to use this when I was traveling so the computer at home could retrieve my mail and I didn't have to leave it on for 2 weeks. And I know a friend who ran a Mac lab that turned itself on at 7am. I'd like to use my Mac as an alarm clock also. (This is one of those "ha ha, Windows can't do that?" kind of things that would be great to have back!)

More Energy Saver options: It's been my experience that Mac laptops under OS X automatically lose 30-40% battery time because of poorer power management. My iBook is lucky to get 2 hours now where I used to get close to 3 hours under OS 9! The same goes for my PBG4 and Lombard.

I'd also like to see Apple start exploiting OS X and Cocoa among other things. I think they've been so focused on the migration that they really haven't touted much beyond stability, memory protection, etc. They should start pushing Services and other Cocoa features. I think there's a lot of momentum in the OS X migration now and Apple could start to focus on innovating new features into OS X instead of just getting OS X up to par with OS 9. Howabout a wishlist for those features?

Finally, don't forget to send these wish list items to Apple!

Time - international

Thanks serpicolugnut and unregistered for that interesting INTERNATIONAL preferences tidbit. Inappropriate placement on Apple's part for sure. Very well hidden....

Thank you so very much.

vunderbar !

I learned 2 little tips for OSX today. Terrific !

Considering ThinkSecret is talking about 10.1.3 seeds and that's build 5Q28 not 5Bwhatever, I would presume these are earlier builds with some of the 10.2 functionality removed but the versioning unchanged. Apple pushed back 10.2 because of reliablity and perception issues. I would think we'll be getting this functionality soon and for free.

At the moment the only usable place to have the dock is on the right. If it is on the left when you open a new window it opens under the dock, on the bottom it covers the resizing tab.

I have found that it works best for me to put my dock on the bottom and to use the "hiding" feature that way it does not cover anything and if I need it I just pull my mouse down and it appears. Anyhow just my preference.

Menu Bar Color?

Did anyone else notice that the menu bar appears to be missing its gray stripes in these videos?

Personally, I'm all for the change, assuming it's not just a quirk of the video codec; it makes things look a bit cleaner.

My friend figured out how to do that in 10.1 or later, but he can't remember how. Everything doesn't have stripes.

the jaguar-clips

Hello again folks,
I've been trying to watch the jaguar-clips in QT 5.0.2 (in OS 9.2) but nothing happens... Is it me or did this happen to anyone else as well? The name of the file is "jaguar_movies.tar.gz", and that doesn't look like a QT film to me. Whatever happened to "*.mov"?

That .tar.gz is the extension for a compressed Unix archive. .gz is added by GZIP, a pretty standard Unix compression tool by GNU. .tar is a Tape ARchive made by the tar command in Unix.

Long story short, the latest version of Stuffit Expander should be able to uncompress and then unarchive the file, leaving you with a folder of images and movies.

If you look closely the stripes are still there. They show up better in the menus that are pulled down but the menu bar still has them. If you look behind the menu titles they show up just a little bit and when they demonstrate the menu bar when the titles are highlighted in the blue then you can see the stripes. Check it out for yourself! Anyhow I sorta like the stripes it kinda gives it a "classy" look. Catch you all later...

I've tired downloading the damn .gz file 35 times!!!

EVERY time it slows to a crawl after about a minute and then stops at about 200K, opening stuffit expander and obviously failing to open 'cos it hasn't downloaded the whole file.

has everyone got cable/DSL or something ?

I've only got a 56K modem but a 1Mb file shouldn't be that much trouble, I've tried Interarchy, IE, Netscape, I even tried applescript but I first tried to download it at around 12pm GMT, it's now 2am GMT and i'm still having no luck. Is there anywhere where I can get screen shots ?

By the way, It's not my connection 'cos I've had no problem downloading quite a few far larger files from download.com today. It's just getting a little bit annoying now but it does make me wonder why the file hasn't been removed yet, every other time there's been any OS X previews, they've been removed within hours.

I can't get the movie to play, either. When i click on the link I get one download with a .tar extension. Quicktime won't touch it....
anyone any thoughts?

The resulting .tar download is compressed. Open (uncompress) it with Stuffit Expander. Then you'll have a folder with the movies in it. :)

Another date/time question:

I'm in Australia, so my dates are dd/mm/yy, and that's the way it's set in the International panel. But the menu bar clock (when I click on it) displays the date mm/dd/yy. It's a pain in the ass thinking it's the 1st of the 26th :D

Can this be fixed?

.tar

The reason that people that aren't on osx are having dificulties watching the movie is because .tar is a unix encoding - ah the joys of osx. Aka you can't watch the movies in OS 9. Good night.

I was anoyed that they took a movie of the spring loaded folder prefs, but couldn't double click a fricking folder to show spring loaded folders in action. They wouldnt put in the prefs but not the functionality for that build would they?

catfish?

i know we would all like our compusters to go faster but
catfish stated that the movies deminstrated a sluggish
computer platform.

if you view the movie you can see that the mouse is also tracking
very poorly. this to me says that the movie capture or compression
or what ever is the culprit not OSX. apples new operating system
has never responded so poorly even in its beta state.

i dont think we have to worry about how slow code could affect our
lives from here on out. once apple speeds the new modern OS all the
little speed bumbs will be worked out. things wont get slower as catfish
implied. the OSX experience will only become stronger in its sophistication.

the mouse looks like it's moving slowly but it looks more like it's a trackpad on a powerbook than an actual mouse. you can see how it moves a bit, stops then moves again. that's pretty consistent with trackpad usage, especially if you've got the tracking set to a slower speed.

Things that need to be fixed...

Here are issues I hope will be addressed in 10.1.3 or 10.2.

1. NFS Mount naming.
For whatever reason Apple seems to think that NFS mounts through "Connect to Server" should be named differently than all other network shares. Instead of naming based on the network share it is based on the host name. This creates a whole series of problems with shares being name "Hostname", "Hostname-1", and "Hostname-2". Icons don't show up correctly unless the drives are always mounted in the same order. Also, apps like iTunes don't even recognized the disk by it's name but rather NFS-003.

2. SSL in Mail.
This is a very big deal for me as many of the mail servers I connect to use SSL.

3. Correct UNIX standardized issues.
Set the hostname to something useful not localhost.
Correct sendmail to work automatically without any configuration.
Add more of the headers and libraries that are missing from Darwin.
Basically try to adhere to more of the UNIX conventions to make life easier and attract more UNIX developers, so that they don't login in and say what the hell has Apple done under the covers.

4. Get M$ to fix the crappy Java support in IE :)

5. Improve the Terminal.
It is still very slow to load and could be improved in a number of ways...

6. Fix window cleanups in Finder.

Thanks,
Bill

I GOTIT TO WORK IN OS 9!!!!!!!!!!!

HEY HEY HEY HEY!!!!!!!!!

I got it to work in OS 9!!!!

I used DropTar and compressed it, and expanded it with Stuffit Expander....

Then a folder appeared called "jaguar_movies" and all the movies were in there!!!!!

how did dis happen?

I got no clue, but I got it to work in OS 9, and thats all that matters!!

irmongoose

APPLE STOP TRYING TO MAKE IT LOOK PRETTY AND MAKE IT WORK WITH NETWORKS.

I need it to work with NT before I can use it!!! I don't give a damm if it has or has not stripes.

OS9 and older still work on NT why can''t their "Modern operating system"

They are losing customers by the thousands in the DTP field!

That is an unfair criticism to apple. Every 9 out of 10 files you download will be either hqx, bin or sit, all of which applications usually cannot handle unless previously dealt with Stuffit Expander which came with both X and classic since ages. The fact that you are not used to the gz or tar extensions doesn't change the fact that it is simply as it has always been. If anyone to blame would be Aladdinsys since their Expander is the one who would have to bind that sort of files to itself. That way when downloaded the file would have the recognizable Stuffit icon and you would know it is compressed. Apple just incorporates a 3rd party decompression tool to save you from getting one, but that is a favor Apple is doing to you, it is not their program, nor a thing that would normally be demanded from an OS.
