I got it working. What I did was Restore>Setup as New Phone>then follow the directions posted on page 4.

How far did you go with the set up as new phone? Did you go until the phone said could not set up new phone and then itunes asked to restore from backup, but didnt restore? Or did you actually set it up as a new phone all the way?

When I restored last time, the situation above happened where i got an error in setting up new phone

Hi Guys, I tried the CLI JB and it failed at:

"cinject.exe -j payloads"

This was tried on a virgin 4S, with no SIM, and no WIFI connection. After correcting these, it worked first time!

Hope this helps somebody.

Brand new phone.

Wiped phone completly. Activated on the phone itself. Told the phone to NOT restore from iTunes.

Ran Jailbreak that finally worked! WOOT!

Now restoring backup from iTunes, hoping this does not wipe the jailbreak.

I did the exact same thing and am also in the process of restoring from my backup in iTunes. Will post back when that's done to say whether or not the JB stuck.

I'll wait until I hear your results as I am where I could set up as a new phone through itunes...

ok got it to work thanks to Tos' help - erased content and set up as a new phone then i ran the CLI procedure as stated on various blogs
and it worked - quick note make sure you dont put a password in if you do you must erase phone and then jb then after jb you can restore from back with no problems
also make sure your phone stays plugged in even when error in VPN happens

Good luck people!

I am over paranoid, did you set up new phone through itunes or on the phone its self? Or does that not make much of a difference?

On the phone itself as you are going through activation select it as a new iPhone (make sure it's connected to your computer BUT make sure iTunes stays closed) then run the jailbreak in command prompt. It should work fine.

THEN once you have confirmed Cydia is on there, Open up iTunes select your iPhone and choose your backup.

Glad I asked as I would have done it through itunes

Multitasking bar takes a little longer to show up now, any one have the same problem? Not major but it's annoying me a little.

My only issue with restoring from backup is that while all my apps and their data is back, for some reason the the apps were restored without their respective folders I put them in. So now I have to go back and do all that myself.

Kinda a pain and may just be a one off situation due to my backup and computer configuration.

On step 7 when I type cinject.exe -j payloads, i keep getting this message
Finding slide...
Failed
Error

It's usually recommended that after jailbreaking to NOT do a restore from backup. Restore as new, and manually set everything back up. Yes, it's a pain, but you ensure that remnants in the back up from a nonJB state don't conflict with those in a JB state.

Yeah, the above sounds over simplified. But in all my efforts to jailbreak, I have never seen an issue when I did "as new". But over and over I see folks who did it from a back up and end up having problem after problem. It's just a safer bet to do as new.

Only my two cents...YMMV.....

backup, restore and wipe clean, close itunes, set up as new phone on iphone, then try the steps. after that you can restore from backup and it will work!!!

I want to thank everyone here, If I was a woman, I'd kiss you all!

If I restore, won't it update me to 5.01? I'm still on 5.0 and would like to keep it for unlock.

Wanted to try the jailbreak on the ipad 2 before attempting this with my iPhone 4S. I'm a bit confused about restoring my ipad 2.

Saved all my data with a backup.
I erased all data and set up the the iPad as new -- from the ipad itself.
Ran the jailbreak, and it went just fine.

Now I'm ready to restore my backup. The only thing that has me a bit skittish is that I seem to remember that when you do a restore, Apple will automatically upgrade you to the newest firmware. Obviously, this isn't a problem right now, but if I do this with the iPhone 4S in a couple of weeks and 5.1 is out, I lose the jailbreak.

Am I missing something?

Thanks
