I haven't felt the desire, or need, to jailbreak in a few years, but I love that it's still alive!

Just out of curiosity: For those who are still involved in the JB scene, what are a few new tweaks that might make someone re-consider jailbreaking?

I'm virtually certain what I'm about to type is impossible (and for iPadOS, not iOS), but... Imagine having a tweak that lets you plug an M1 ipad into a monitor, and it switches from iPadOS to MacOS?! Now that would get my attention...
AppSync Unified to sideload apps mainly.

Nice! I haven’t jailbroken my phone in years but I used to be addicted. Lol. I’ll spend hours customizing my phone. Now, I don’t have the patience or time. I just need my phone to work.

If someone were to write an AirPlay2 hack for the AppleTV HD, I would be so happy.

<Inset Butters Meme>

Might have to chuck the 7 that got replaced with 4Ks if I can’t figure out what to do with them.

That and a quality POE hack and I would be set.

Didnt realist the JB community still existed tbh ... I dont think I have JB a handset since the days of my 3GS or possibly 4 ... feels like an age ago now

Good that its still happening since a lot the features we know and love were pioneered through JBs

Being English, I always have a giggle when I see that word.

Legend has it that our use of that slang comes from a prison in Leeds/the Yorkshire area that would mark such inmates' doors with 'N.O.N.C.E.', which was acronymous for 'Not On Normal Courtyard Exercise' and ensured that they were separated from regular inmates for their own safety. Of course, only certain inmates had that mark on their door, so it became synonymous with those kinds of inmates. Hence "he's a nonce" meaning what people accused Prince Andrew of recently.

In the third panel, what on earth does the ‘set nonce’ button do?

I’m in England, I think that word has a very different meaning here…
NB, there is an urban myth that nonce (child molester) came from a sign placed outside a prisoner's cell: Not On Normal Courtyard Exercise.

However, the Oxford English Dictionary, which is the arbiter of such matter, says that the origin of the word is unknown, perhaps derived from nancy-boy.

Sometimes I forget people still jailbreak, I have not felt that it was needed for several years now and I don't think that it is worth the security risk.

Anyone know of a jailbreak that lets you remove the camera and flashlight shortcuts from the lock screen? Asking for a friend who runs a privacy focused tech company but can’t figure out the basics. Thanks 👍

jailbreaking also technically voids a device's warranty coverage
Jail breaking doesn’t “void warranty coverage” any more than installing 3rd party memory does. But, the device might need to be returned to stock condition before a warranty repair could be made.

It can’t be done using a profile?

Could anyone chime in with any useful Jailbreak features this allows? I used to jailbreak my devices all the time, but these days pretty much all the stuff I'd want is now in iOS so I haven't bothered for a while. I'd be curious to know if there are any new killer app features that would make it worthwhile.

I would always jailbreak my early iPhones as the one thing I liked was number of rows and columns for apps..I used to have 5 on the home bar and 5 x 5 on the page.Apple doesn't have this and made phone easier to use

There would be no reason to jailbreak if Apple would allow sideloading of apps.

That's pretty well correct at this point. I jailbroke pretty regularly from my 3g until the 4s or 5, and once on my 6, then stopped. No real point anymore.

My main concern, at this point, is opening up potential security exploits that could be used by celebrite, bad actors, etc. I haven't been pulled over in a decade, and no TSA or border guard has cared to look at my devices in the 30ish times I've crossed the US border in the same amount of time..but I'm not taking the chance.

There are still a few small UI tweaks that I like to play with. The main reason I jailbreak right now is for sideloading. I’ll tell you why. By sideloading modified or bootleg copies of social media apps I can get an ad free experience. Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, YouTube, they’re all a completely different experience without the ads. It’s so much better it’s ridiculous. I can even skip sponsored ads on YouTube, and have had picture in picture for a long time already. Not to mention I can download anything I want to on any of the apps, with no watermarks. 🤷🏻‍♂️
Is it a security risk? Sure, a little bit, but a calculated one. I’ve been in the jailbreak scene long enough that I know who I trust and who I don’t.

Not so. Jailbreaking allows the user to subvert file system and API protections, so that any manner of operations are possible. Some people (not me), look for that kind of thing. Sideloading, should it arise, is a means of obtaining software from another App Store: such software still has to play by the rules.

Quiet frankly jailbreak is the way to go if you want to turn your iPad into a pc faster than the apple “ engineering“ team ( who’s incapable of making a good file system or allow people to side load their app)
