When I think about the Jailbreak iPhone, I always think about that scene from Ironman 2 with Tony in his iPhone suit, Rhodey in is Jailbreak iPhone suit fighting all those Androids at the end of the movie.

I don't think jailbreaking an iPhone is as appealing as it once was. Back in the day Apple lagged way behind Android in terms of features and customization. They've since picked up the pace. Plus, if you don't know what you're doing...jailbreaking could leave you open to hackers.

Personally, I hold no malice towards the jailbreaking community. This feels like eons ago but it was really the jailbreaking community that showed the true power of the iPhone. In fact, as the years have passed - a lot of the features I used in 2010 on my Jailbroken iPhone 4 have made their way to iOS. Like almost, identical.

No one has to do it, but I believe it's wrong to demonize them because they really did help in the beginning of all of this.

The only reason to jailbreak now is to get sideloading, but thanks to the passing of the Digital Markets Act into law Apple's gonna have to add a sideloading toggle in the near future. Once that toggle arrives, there will be little to no reason to jailbreak anymore. It's why there's no jailbreak for the Microsoft Xbox and Meta Quest 2 since they both allow sideloading on their devices, so anything people would've wanted via jailbreak, they already get.

I'm virtually certain what I'm about to type is impossible (and for iPadOS, not iOS), but... Imagine having a tweak that lets you plug an M1 ipad into a monitor, and it switches from iPadOS to MacOS?! Now that would get my attention...
Just use Sidecar.

I don’t understand the point
If you want heavily modifiable system why don’t you just use Android?
The main advantage of iOS is security and reliability and that’s because it’s a closed system heavily controlled by Apple, otherwise Android devices have similar /better hardware.
Why jailbreak when you can just get an Android?

I'm getting tired of having to explain this. People who jailbreak want to use iOS and add things it hasn't had before because of how Apple locks it down to draconian levels when literally every other mobile device isn't like this. The majority of iOS features from the new customizable lock screen in iOS 16 to screen recording, TO THE ENTIRE CONCEPT OF THE APP STORE, originated from jailbreak tweaks.

Telling people who want sideloading or who jailbreak to switch to the other duopoly does not change anyone's mind or add anything to the conversation, even moreso now that the Digital Markets Act is law now so Apple will be forced to open up and enable sideloading lest they face legal repercussions from the European Union.

In the third panel, what on earth does the ‘set nonce’ button do?

I’m in England, I think that word has a very different meaning here…
As a brit myself, yeah it's a good chuckle every single time I read it

Yuck, sideloading 🤮

Could anyone chime in with any useful Jailbreak features this allows? I used to jailbreak my devices all the time, but these days pretty much all the stuff I'd want is now in iOS so I haven't bothered for a while. I'd be curious to know if there are any new killer app features that would make it worthwhile.

I jailbreak so I don’t have to watch YouTube ads, have an iPad style dock on my phone, battery percent instead of icon on the status bar, no swipe to unlock via Face ID unless I have notifications, can PiP any app and resize the window to my liking, multitasking with functional windows on iPad, and a turbocharged UI experience. There are so many functional performance upgrades available via jailbreaking and it is a common misconception we do this merely to change our icons, themes, and fonts. I’ve said this before but some of the incremental upgrades Apple offers via yearly software updates have been available via jailbreak for years and they have certainly borrowed (or outright stolen) ideas developed from tweak developers.

The iOS 16 lockscreen revamp offered in 2022 is something I have had for years on my iPhone 7 (see attached).

Finally; iOS 15 is the first iOS version to have not yet received a jailbreak for more than 300 days.
On another note, the name for this jailbreak is really bad imo
Yeah, picking a name that rhymes with scrote… um… not good.

Although the does remind me on Chakotay from Star Trek Voyager. Resistance to such memories is futile, I guess.

Apple should get their cybersec teams to review it in detail to make sure they are able to mitigate this in the future versions of the iOS as usual. Hats off to the researchers and developers working on the jailbreak, a lot of analytical work, especially in the last a few years.
The fact this jailbreak only works up to 15.1.1 suggests, at least on the surface, this hole has already been plugged.

Of course it’s a great idea for Apple to check. :)

Jailbreak. Wow, that's a word I haven't heard in years.

Obi-Wan... Now, that's a name I've not heard in a long time. A long time.

Ed: (turns out it was only about 9 years and a surprising amount of visual ageing in that time)

JediPhone trainee Luke Skywalker: I think my uncle knows him. He said he was dead.

Many of those additions would have come to iOS anyway, jailbreaking or not.

The idea that “the entire concept of the App Store” is somehow only down to jailbreaking is nice in theory, but mobile devices had apps long before iPhones arrived, and if you weren’t able to browse for apps on those devices, well it’s only natural that this function would have come. People were browsing catalogues on paper a century ago through mail and phone order, and eBay was around long before iPhones arrived on the scene.

Jailbreaking and apps sped some capabilities up to come to iPhones.

All of that said the JB community did several metric tons of good. And the fact they’re still there after all this time is great to see.

I haven’t Jailbroken an Apple product in 7 years, and to this day I miss it. Slowly grew out of it as Apple started implementing more and more of what the Jailbreak community had already thought of. Props to the hackers/devs that still put in the effort and are usually successful.

Pretty sure without them we wouldn’t have some of the ‘tweaks’ that are now a standard part of the UI.
