Jailbreaking your iPhone is a very bad idea.

About a month after each time I jailbreak it I restore because of the poor performance and battery life.

The fact that you don't know enough not to clog your phone with junk does not mean that those of us who do should not jailbreak. I've been jailbroken for six months with no problems, your failure notwithstanding.

You're very shallow, forming a conclusion like that? You thinking I download junk onto my phone? Find somewhere on my post that says I do. Excuse me, but I only used sbsettings, backgrounder, and winterboard. I am almost 100% positive you use those packages as well, so that'd be very hypocritical.

I have owned every iPhone up to the 3GS (soon, the 4th iPhone) and I have jailbroken each device, each time giving it "another chance."

It makes the phone so much buggier, and technically is illegal.
It's a plus to those who don't jailbreak to get updates w/o having all the data deleted from your apps.
There's a reason Apple doesn't allow it.

JB is not for everyone.
Some people should never bother and stay stock if they dont research enough or know what they're doing.
Poor performance and battery issues come after the user decides to install buggy stuff on their iphone.
My 3GS has been JB since day 1 and never have any probs.
There's tons of more things you can do to your own phone than what Apple would ever allow.
But again its your phone, you decide.
If you dont like it or its not for you all you gotta do is hit restore on itunes.

I know what I'm doing. I'm tech savvy... I only used three packages when I have jb. (Winterboard, SBsettings, and Backgrounder.)

Decision to jailbreak is like choice on peeing style.

You can pee sitting down or standing up, I don't really care.

Winterboard does slow down the iphone, I never install it for that reason. Even on a 3GS. If I need to change a few things I do thru SSH.
Also if you're on a 2G or 3G with 3.+ the lag is already there off the bat.

Same here. WB used to be one of the first apps I download - not anymore.

Why not? To jailbreak is to offer support for the community that is against Apple's policy on their app store.

How does jailbreaking my phone but then adding nothing to it support anyone? I guess I don't really understand how they work or what they get out of that.

Great, so I should jailbreak and then do nothing with it?

Wonderful endorsement.

Plenty of things to do when you JB that dont have to slowdown your phone.
And with a 3GS its barelly noticable. On previous models its another story though. Its tradeoff or choice up to the user.
You want themes with custom icons, background and sounds you'll get some lag.

Let's look at it from an opposite point of view. If today no one jailbreaks, then the community dies.

Lol :D
I dont think thats a good example.
Just JB your phone to support the JB community wont do anything towards Apples policy :)
It doesn't directly, but just think, strength in numbers.

Come on man. Do you really need to nitpick?

He obviously meant it's the packages you decide to pile on top of each other that cause performance issues, not the jailbreak itself.

How is that a nitpick? He said to jailbreak but then to not do any of the things everyone is saying they like doing. I'm trying to figure out WHY he jailbreaks if he doesn't DO anything with it. I'm not arguing about jailbreaking...I'm trying to figure out why HE jailbreaks.

I have a 3G.

Trying to use Google Maps is an ordeal on my phone compared to a 3GS. I can't imagine adding anything else to this phone.

Jailbreaking has always reminded me of skiing. I know others enjoy it and I'm happy for them, but nothing anyone says makes it sound like something I'd want to do.

But yeah, I find threads like this confusing for that same reason. Who the hell starts a thread like "I don't like skiing so no one else should do it either!"?

I hear you.
I never ski either and dont plan to either :D

****:apple:

That comment just won me over!

+1 on Winterboard alone slowing my phone. Stopped JBing after several times with the same experience.

-1 on it being illegal. You had a decent argument to start, but screwed it up at the end.

winterboard is def the culprit I avoid ti like the plague.

Exactly. And why argue this? I jailbroke mine 8 months ago and not one problem. Just have to research and know what you're doing. Couldn't imagine my phone stock.

People who say it is illegal are a ra-tard.

Huh. WB was one of the very first things I installed when I JB, even knowing how against it some people here were. I figured I could always uninstall it if I didn't like what it did to my phone's performance. Never needed to, however. The phone is as fast as it's ever been (or again, the difference in performance is so small as to be unnoticeable to me, which is what matters. :) )
