Huh. WB was one of the very first things I installed when I JB, even knowing how against it some people here were. I figured I could always uninstall it if I didn't like what it did to my phone's performance. Never needed to, however. The phone is as fast as it's ever been (or again, the difference in performance is so small as to be unnoticeable to me, which is what matters. :) )

Also, if you don't install Winterboard, you pretty much miss out on a lot.

That was kinda what I thought, too. I mean, I've tweaked existing themes extensively using SSH, but to me it'd be too much of a PITA to do the entire THING that way. It's just so much easier with Winterboard.

I have owned every iPhone up to the 3GS (soon, the 4th iPhone) and I have jailbroken each device, each time giving it "another chance."
About a month after each time I jailbreak it I restore because of the poor performance and battery life.
It makes the phone so much buggier, and technically is illegal.
It's a plus to those who don't jailbreak to get updates w/o having all the data deleted from your apps.
There's a reason Apple doesn't allow it.

This post fails..

You are kidding, right???? Please tell me you are kidding...

Pretty sure he is. While it's true you own the hardware, you don't own the software. It's just "licensed" for your use.

But I say that's a bunch of crap! :D

There's plenty of functions you can have jailbroken without Winterboard. I have:

Backgrounder (pretty flawless on the 3GS)
MiWi (why pay for a 3G iPad?)
3G Unrestrictor (not needed for Sling anymore but still useful for Skype)
YourTube (download YT videos)

None have any stability effect or cause lag.

i spent today wondering whether or not to restore my iphone back to it's fully legal state. but i can't bring myself to do this as i would really miss ireal quicksms. i bugs me that i have to leave an app to read an sms.

probably not a huge issue for other posters and some may think it sad that this bugs me.

I like how he said its illegal. Did you hear Arizona just passed a new law, they can pull you over and ask you to show them your iphone, and if it is jailboken they can lock you up on fellony charges. Only steve jobs can get you out of jail (if he wants to)

Well it is pretty easy to tell from looking at someone that they jailbroke their iPhone.

Jail breaking is fun, jail breaking is kewl :)
Jail Breaking gives your phone wonderful powers to do things Steve Jobs never intended.

That stated it will also void your warranty

How is jailbreaking possibly 'illegal'? I bought the phone. It's mine. If I want to drop it in a puddle, I can. if I want to unlock the operating system, I can. I paid for it and I can do what I want with it!

I don't agree with it, but by hacking the OS you are violating the license you agreed to. Not a criminal offense, but it could possibly be a civil offense.

I say JB away if it suits you. But I did feel that it slowed my phone. Never tried it on my 3Gs...before l left it in the back of a NYC cab. :(

The only ones hacking the OS are Geohot, Dev Team, etc. The user didn't hack the OS. We even have some putting the Android OS on their phones (why I have no idea).

Implementing their hack still violates the license.

I'm not saying not to do it...just pointing out the "black and white" of the situation. I personally think it's crap.
