In other news, Lou Dobbs has decreed that only Americans should have the right to iPhone OS 4.0 and that we need to protect our borders from foreigners sneaking their own tablets across the Mexican border.

Macbook Pro update?

Finally getting a MBP and was supposed to happen this week through work, but have been considering putting it off until after the event to see what the update is. I don't need an i5 and so have been going back and forth and was settled to just get it. If I do get one and there is an iLife or iWork update the following week what is Apple's policy on getting the new software? I know with snow leopard you could get it for $5 if you bought a Mac with leopard within a month or so. Is that the case for the iSuites?

It has varied. But, if you wait until after the announcement, you should get it regardless of whether there is a new MacBook Pro or not.

Maybe iTunes 9.3 is also on tap. I can't believe how many bugs 9.2 has. My purchases fail quite often, I still can't download my digital copy of Harry Potter ATHBP, and now none of the Complete Your Album or iTunes Plus Upgrades options are showing. My last glitch was purchasing the Plus upgrade for The Simpsons Movie soundtrack, getting charged but not getting the new files. Booooooo.

I think the new iLife is going to come with a graphics program. Got that from the paint splatter on the invite. :D

That'd be really nice. Apple is already competing with Adobe's Lightroom with Aperture - sure no one can ever "really" compete with Photoshop, but I think Apple could answer the Everyman's Photoshop with a really great art creation program. Strip photoshop down to layers, some great brushes, the Apple ease of use, and put it on a tablet. I'd buy it today....

My various thoughts...

I wouldn't mind videos in iPhoto if you just just review them quickly there. Quicklook should not just show you a blurry still image. Surely they'll make it possible to mouse over the video to see a preview and play them direct from iPhoto if required. Sure, I'll use iMovie if I want to do some editing, but I'd still like to see the movies and photos I captured of an event together in iPhoto.

This would work well on a touch screen: http://www.atebits.com/scribbles

My last thought/hope: an iWork application that replaces the shameful interactive whiteboard software currently available for Mac and PC. Keynote with interactive elements. The tablet would enable it to work with any display but if it also worked with other interactive displays that would be awesome too.

iLife X will be an integral part of the device so it will probably be shown along with the device and ship along with the device.

Yes. Full multi-touch office applications.

The question isn't "is Apple releasing a tablet?" it's "what is the functionality that will make it stand out from the netbooks?" Full multi-touch apps will be part of answering that question, I think.

Hopefully as well as an update to iLife , iWork will be an update to Aperture 3. Lightroom (new version) is in beta.

We photographers need new updates:

  • Love to be able to order display boxes for my clients photobooks
  • Faces would actually be useful
  • 64 bit - please soon!!
  • More book options
  • More cover options for books
  • Better integration with iweb

iWeb updates please
  • Better deployment for google - iweb seo (belight software) is useful but should be integrated as standard to iWeb
  • HTML text editor / split screen - useful
  • More templates and options to edit templates
  • Better slideshows
  • Some form of flash creation tool (I know apple hate flash but I can dream!)

Please someone hear my prayers!

It would be nice to see a basic image manipulation app included in iWork. It seems silly to have to go into pages or keynote to do that fancy alpha-select thing.

You can use Preview to do this. Quite useful seeing as instant alpha doesn't seem to have made it into every Apple app yet (eg iWeb).

There will be a MBP refresh in the next few weeks. I work at an Apple reseller and all of the MBPs are on constraint for the next three weeks. Last week, Apple said there was plenty of stock

Yes, possibly - for the Netbook market...But how will Apple sell this thing to people like me (and probably most of us here) who already have an iPhone and a Macbook/Macbook Pro? That's what I'm really interested in seeing...Why do I need this if I have an iPhone and a Macbook? What am I missing between the two devices, that I don't know about? I think Apple is great at that, they came up with many uses for a cell phone, that most of us never even realized we'd use/let alone would have ever imagined a cell phone doing. Will the tablet be the same way? I'm afraid that if it IS, it'll cost $2,000.

analysis

based on my analysis of the accesories markets, seeing LOTS of sales of cases and accesories for version 3.0 phones, I would say chances are HIGH we see a 4.0 hardware version in this meeting for end of Q1/Q2 release.

I love how FoxNews has become are trusted source in Apple Rumors.

They are trying to compete with CNBC who generally has a leg up with Apple news.

Rocketman

reminder: My prediction was tablet show-off, discuss iPhone OS4, discuss touch iWork/iLife, release SDK with associated prototype hardware running OS 3.2 blessed and OS4.0 Beta. March shipment.

While the predictions don't seem that unlikely. It is odd that FoxNews had suddenly emerged as a leading source...

In the words of miles01110, "first time for everything."

As I said in another thread, the "one more thing" will be the announcement of Sarah Palin in Apple's board...she will finally be able to bring a "fair and balanced" view to all things Apple...
