When one orders from Online Apple Store, (last time I looked) in the US choice either English or Spanish.
Even if it cost alittle more, Apple should offer all the major keyboards.

The US has several different keyboards you can choose from but other regions don't have that many, for instance the European ones don't have the Japanese nor the Taiwanese keyboard.

Thanks for understanding you two.

Also, at no point did I claim that the latin alphabet is my first alphabet

Anyway, I just need to map ろ to a spare key and then i'll be on my way.

Any advice? I'm hoping I can just edit the Japanese keyboard layout.. I mean, it should be simple but I just can't figure it out.

I know this thread is long dead, but I wanted to post a reply for those looking for such information in the future who stumble upon this thread.

There is a GREAT tool that let's you easily modify your keyboard layout for Mac, it's called Ukelele. It is free and there is an active support group who will gladly provide assistance. It can be downloaded from:

You can certainly remap any key on your keyboard with Ukelele. If you run out of keys you can map characters/symbols (any unicode encoding you wish) to other layers of the keyboard (by "layer" I am referring to the set of characters the keys produce when you're pressing one or more modifier keys such as "Shift", "Option", etc.)

Ukelele can import the currently active keyboard, so all you have to do is the make the change(s) you wish and since you can not replace the built-in Mac keyboards so you must give your keyboard a unique name. Then you can install it using the built-in command.

(BTW- to OP: I can't believe the way virtually everyone on this thread ignored your question, instead trying to convince you to use romaji input using all sorts of often rude techniques. It is absolutely ridiculous!
to the world at-large: if you can't answer the question, don't post anything! It's a simple concept…)

Glad OP found a solution. I never liked typing in kana as I learned in romaji and find it much easier then a kana keyboard.

I lived in Japan for 16 years and always hated the small space bar that comes with most Japanese keyboards. When I got my first Mac one of the things I loved was that I could get an English keyboard instead of the Japanese ones via a CTO option. It’s hard, if not impossible, to get new laptops in Japan besides Macs with non-Japanese keyboards.

Agreed, I've been living in Japan for a while now and I never got used to the local layout: the tiny small space bar is extremely annoying when trying to touch-type. I always go for international US layout when buying a device here, plus I keep an external keyboard in my native language at home.
