Why is it that people are so sensitive to whether or not a restart is required? I've always wondered because people around here make the biggest deal about it. And I guess if it is a big deal, I'd like be in on it too!
I think its because people like to brag about their uptime. I save minor updates that require restarts until something bigger just so I don't kill my uptime for something silly. Like now I have the iTunes phone update sitting in software update, but I don't want to restart just for that, so I'll just wait for 10.4.3 and install them both at the same time. Thats my reasoning, i think most complaints are along those lines.

Is there any reason us normal people should get it or is it of no use unless you are a developer?

I use it since I need it for school and developing apps/writing code, but Java 1.4.2 will do just fine for "regular users" 🙂

What's worse than not having broadband? I'll tell you! Having broadband and moving somewhere where they don't have it!!!!!!

That's worse!! 😡

Hey guys - I have a question. Safari USED to open a site I frequent's gallery files a long time ago (Panther-era). Then it stopped. I can open the site just fine in Firefox. I wrote the webmaster and asked him and he said to check the JAVA logs for errors and that everything was working on his end. He said it's Safari's problem... I grab each JAVA update (even the 1.5 beta) with the hopes that it will fix the issue but still - nothing. To say I'm irked is an understatement. Any ideas as to why this page (among others) still won't work in Safari?

It's an online app for rasterizing pictures into huge posters. And while I'm on the subject - this guy is FAMOUS for this app and it's free and he's released the sourcecode. There is a craptacular PC standalone now but no one in the Mac community will step up. Someone could make some decent cash by creating a nice cocoa/carbon standalone version for the Mac and throwing it up on VersionTracker. Until then - we'll just have to use the Web version - in FireFox... 🙁

I suppose that certainly does showcase the beauty of an operating system if one person (or, better yet, a hundred or a thousand persons) can keep it going for three months (or some arbitrary period) with no downtime compared with its evil (say, Windoze) counterpart. If only we could do so *and* claim that we also stayed atop the latest updates, both large and small.

If you need to run a Java application that makes use of any of the new language features that came with Java 5.0, then yes, you need the new JDK/JRE that the 5.0 download provides. Otherwise, stick with the 1.3.x/1.4.x JDK/JRE that Apple's providing, as it's considered more stable for the time being.

Having said that, some applications (such as Azureus) prefer to run under the latest Java version, but can run under older J2SE versions.

54 seconds here--GO SUREWEST!!!

I got it in 94 seconds. High speed internet is the only way to go although I think it still has MAJOR room for improvement. Anyway, nice but like many waiting for 10.4.3. Please hurry Apple.

More correctly, if you need to compile Java code that makes use of the new language features - you need the 5.0 download. The .class files compiled in 5.0 should be compatible with 4.x VM's. (or so we're told)

Java 1.5

Safari won't use Java 1.5 until you go to the Utilities>Java>J2SE5.0>Java Preferences. Once in Java Preferences select the General Tab. Choose J2SE 5.0 under Applets>Use version. Under Java Application Runtime Settings drag J2SE 5.0 to the top above J2SE 1.4.2. Click Save at the bottom and close the window. Been running this for over a month. Works great.

Now in Software Update:

The update, which is over 40MB, is also available for direct download.

Contrary to the front page, I have also the update showing up for 10.3.9 -- doesn't look like it is limited to Tiger.

Downloading now...

Looking at the Apple website, it says that the update requires Tiger so *someone* goofed. Will post an update in a few minutes if it installs.

It's gonna take your computer 20 minutes to download this? Are you on dial-up? 🙁

Let me in too! I wanna know! 😀 Maybe they are all running critical 24/7 servers.

Seems to be installed OK.

In case I wasn't clear before, the download was available in my Software Update.

Lol, here's what I do: I install the update, and then force quit Software Update when it starts bouncing in the Dock and forcing me to restart. I don't think I'll be actively using the updated software after this, but I don't need to go and plan my software updates. The next time I restart for some other reason, I'll automatically be using the new software since I already installed it. 🙂

Apple's implementation of Java is quite poor and slow as buggery-compared its windows and Linux counter parts.

I feel your pain. I went from a nice DSL connection all last year to a 56K dial-up over the summer 😡 I actually waited until I moved to go to school to update to 10.3.9 (54MB). Even if I tried to download that with the 56K, it prolly wouldn't have been done until now anyway😛 I don't even know what they've got set up here, but it's the fastest I've ever used! Only took 9.57 seconds to download this Java update. Woohoo! 😎

I wish i could dl this in 20 minutes. This is at least a few hours for me. It sure does suck living in the boondocks. I suppose i'll dl it at school tomorrow.

No kidding. When we visit my mom for a week or so at Christmas we all go nuts because she doesn't have broadband. I drive over to the Apple store in the local mall and sit outside like a vagrant getting access through their wireless connection.

Some people just seem to get hung up on it. Personally, I don't mind restarts for upgrades.

Safari still sucks when it comes to E*Trade, what gives?

I wish the updates were more specific about what areas they have improved. I find Safari has problems with financial sites like Citibank and E*Trade, among others. Certain credit card sites are no good with Safari either.

A significant part of my digital lifestyle concerns managing my finances online, and Safari does not do well in this area. Maybe I am not the typical Apple user, but making Safari compatible in this area would be a big improvement.
