Lol, here's what I do: I install the update, and then force quit Software Update when it starts bouncing in the Dock and forcing me to restart. I don't think I'll be actively using the updated software after this, but I don't need to go and plan my software updates. The next time I restart for some other reason, I'll automatically be using the new software since I already installed it. 🙂

dude, thats just nuts. get a grip and just reboot with the updates. i would imagine all you guys that hate rebooting are using desktops?? I could care less what my uptime is on my PowerBook since it goes back and forth to work and back and forth to the free wireless at the coffee shop. =)

Actually, another dude at work has the same PB as me. He said he just closes his so it goes to sleep so he doesn't have to reboot. I don't get it. He says he has only rebooted about 3 times in the past 4 months since he's had it. To me it makes no sense. For a desktop, ok I could go with it, but for a laptop that is mobile, I just cant.

You realize, I hope, that often software updates which require a reboot will put the system into an unstable state under the assumption that a prompt reboot will sort things out. You're playing with fire, even if you haven't been burned yet.

There is a working beta of Java 1.5 through the ADC (strangely only the API documentation is available through ADC) - You should be able to download it from here http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/java2se50release1.html (I certainly have had a working version for over a month and have already built some .jars with 1.5 through Eclipse).

But that's my point, Java 5.0 has been out now for almost a year and Apple's version is still only a beta. They were making such case for OS X being a great Java development platform but they are behind in their implementation. And there is no explanation.

Why does this not make sense? As far as I understand, sleeping a powerbook will shut down all the mechanical bits, and power basically two things - the RAM and the little light that snores. There's no harm in sleeping over shutdown, as far as I know, so it actually doesn't make sense to shutdown the machine to me.

And I'm not hung up about rebooting. I couldn't possibly care less about my 'up time'.

More correctly, if you need to compile Java code that makes use of the new language features - you need the 5.0 download. The .class files compiled in 5.0 should be compatible with 4.x VM's. (or so we're told)

Not so.

I downloaded the latest version of gham (gham.sf.net). It required the 1.5 runtime. As mentioned elsewhere you can download it and you need to chance system settings and put 1.5 first in order for the applications to run.

Other than that I have had no problems with 1.5

Hey - don't everyone answer me at once. WTF. None of you even acknowledged my post. Reeeaaal friendly board.

Odd, I thought there was an NDA regarding discussing tools available to you as a developer, or something.

Yeh good one <---- insult people who may be willing to help!

Anyway, I can get on the site, but I cant actually "open" any of the galleries. It just comes down to bad testing on the web designers for the most part I'm presuming rather than an actual fault of safari.

Same here.

That particular stuff happens to be available to everyone.

Not to make you feel bad, but it was a 93 seconds download here. You should look into a cable modem or DSL. I saw that SBC is having a promotion now for $14.95 a month for the first year.

Well, I got it in 71 seconds here on my University's campus. I feel for this 20+ min guy though. I have dial-up at home and don't have the option of getting cable or DSL. I live too far out in the country. Only option is satellite, and neither I nor my parents are paying 500 bucks for a dish. For now, we are stuck with dial-up. Dial-up has come a long way over the years as far as reliability (at least with Earthlink).

Why are you restarting your PowerBook?

There is no point in shutting down your laptop. Thats why there is a sleep mode. You must have been a Windows previously. My iBook never gets shut down unless I have to do an update. Its always left on. I just log out and close it. It goes to sleep.

I suppose that certainly does showcase the beauty of an operating system if one person (or, better yet, a hundred or a thousand persons) can keep it going for three months (or some arbitrary period) with no downtime compared with its evil (say, Windoze) counterpart.

I turn my windows box off cause the fans are so darn loud. 🙂

Performance Boost

Are there any noticable changes in performance? NeoOffice/J could certainly benefit from some Java speed increases. If so, I'll give it a download, otherwise, I see no need, personally.

Definitely look into broadband if it's available.

It was a 10 second download here in Japan. I have FTTH (fiber to the home) broadband running at <100Mbs.

I feel the pain whenever I visit my parents in the US since all they have is dialup. They're happy with it, but they get an earful whenever I'm around.

don't bother. i prefer 10.3.9 - quicktime pro reasons

I think that if you just make sure that you save your registered QTP version of Quicktime Player somewhere so that it goes not get deleted by the Quicktime updater, you can still access all of the Pro features of QT7 using the QT6 player.

How you go about doing that while upgrading from 10.3 to 10.4 is left to the reader as an exercise...

well this seems to have killed Java on my computer for at least Safari.

No website loads if it has java or javascript until i turned it off in the preferences :/

This is NOT a beta version. Apple released Java 1.5 for Tiger the same day that Tiger started shipping. This is a real release. Granted it has bugs just like other Java releases but it is not classified as a beta release.

You are right. I just switched less than 2 weeks ago from being a regular Windows user at home. Windows sleep and wake up functionality is less than decent and practically laughable compared to how it works on my new PB. Thats one reason I always just shutdown and boot again when I get to where I am going.

Does it not drain the battery even when in sleep mode? I also guess there will be practically no heat being generated when in sleep mode, so is it ok to put it in an InCase carrying bag while in sleep mode? Also, what about moving it about while sleeping? Could that possibly jar the HD and cause problems?

....just curious...thanks.
