This is NOT a beta version. Apple released Java 1.5 for Tiger the same day that Tiger started shipping. This is a real release. Granted it has bugs just like other Java releases but it is not classified as a beta release.

OK, sorry, so it's not a beta but it is release1 and I thought it would be useful to point out to people who were asking about 1.5. Next time I'm up past midnight with my wife on at me to get to bed I won't bother registering with a site to put up a helpful post, then trawl through Apple's site for a non obvious link.

Does it not drain the battery even when in sleep mode?
It still drains battery power but at a slow rate (so if possible leave it connected but sleep is just fine for traveling). This power is used to keep the RAM refreshed. Sleep on Mac OS X allows for near instant waking when you want to use your laptop.

For all my laptop and desktop Mac's basically I never shut them down, just sleep them when I don't need them running. Allows me to work near instantly when needed while burning little power when not needed.

I also guess there will be practically no heat being generated when in sleep mode, so is it ok to put it in an InCase carrying bag while in sleep mode?
No heat generated when the system is sleeping. Nothing much is active when sleeping.

Also, what about moving it about while sleeping? Could that possibly jar the HD and cause problems?
The hard drive is spun down fully and locked while sleeping.

After installing it and then restarting the next morning it caused my machine to go buggy. Computer would freeze up after about 5 minutes. Programs would stop working. Ugh! Had to do an archive and install of 10.4 again to clean it up.

"verification failed'

I can't download it either from software Update or by Direct Download. "verification failed' and " Apple Digital Sig..." fault.

Any ideas?

Thanks,

RTJ

the first restart after this update made my iMac G5 fans go in to jet engine noise mode during the grey boot screen, its never done this before.
Once the login screen appeared i restarted it and its been fine since.

anyone else had similar problem?

Likely not a problem. Likely the kext cache (mkext) was being rebuilt hence delaying the loading of the full kernel and the hardware did not hear from the platform power manager in the expected time so it went into a "safe" mode.

It was a 10 second download here in Japan.
10 seconds here as well.
Dont know the facts of the internet connection we have here (work), but I usually max out the 100mbit LAN connection. 😛

Dont notice any difference between this Java version and the previous one, which I guess is a good thing.

Well it seems to have radically improved the performance of Banana Republic's site. The formatting is still wack but at least pages load. The site was largely unusable in Safari, but completely fine in Firefox. Not that BR site usage is critical to me, but I just happened to be trying to access it when this update came out.

Yahoo Fantasy Baseball's Classic StatTracker seems to be broken by this update. Worked fine yesterday, doesn't work today-- only change is the Java update.

Thank you Apple for still taking care of us Panther users. I downloaded Java Security Update 4.0 41.6 MB last evening. All is good.

I have been having problem with safari locking up and causing a crash. I then have to restart the computer. This all started after I installed the Java update. I have turned off Java and Java Script in safari's preferences and that has helped but doesn't seem right. Is anybody else having any problems? I have also performed a Permissions Repair.

The Upgrade broke my Java

I waited for a while and no-one seemed to have any problems, so I ran my upgrade and bam - Java has been nuked - much like one of the upgrades to Java a few months ago.

Now if I open the Terminal and type java -version

I get

"HotSpot not at correct virtual address. Sharing disabled."

anyone out there know a fix for this?

dave

I installed the update, even though I didn't really want too. I had forced mine to use the 5.0 JDK so I could compile and run Java 5 apps, but this update reset it to 1.4.2. I had to switch it back, but at least I remembered how to do it.

I'd say just try to reinstall the whole thing. Unless Java still works, in that case the HotSpot may not be that big of a problem.

Since installing, has anyone else having complete system problems? Systemwide freezes? Web pages not loading? Having to do manual restarts?

I've been having the same problems, I've had to restart five times since I updated. It's quite annoying.

Sounds like you had something using the Java Virtual Machine at the time.

I got
Code:
[dual-G4-800:~] bousozok% java -version
java version "1.4.2_09"
Java(TM) 2 Runtime Environment, Standard Edition (build 1.4.2_09-232)
Java HotSpot(TM) Client VM (build 1.4.2-54, mixed mode)

You might go looking for the receipt, remove it from the folder, and run Software Update again.
