They're making plenty of margin to Pro-motion happen, especially with what they're charging for their storage tiers. They just don't want to go down a single dime.
it's because the pro devices have been stagnant. they don't have any new technologies to actually sell their pro line so they need to keep segmenting on display technology that has been around for years. shame.

If you want an expensive iPad mini sure…
Why not an expensive iPad mini? The iPad mini is already not the cheapest iPad. If you only care about price get a base ipad. People buy the mini for the size. It’s the only premium small tablet on the market. People who want a cheap small tablet should get a kindle fire or something like that.

To be honest they should put the A17 Pro in the iPad Mini. They were bragging about it being a chip capable of console gaming, and the iphone 15 pro as a great gaming phone, but in my opinion the iPad Mini is the perfect size to be a great portable gaming device (game availability is another story…)! I’ve been playing Genshin Impact on the current generation iPad Mini for like a year and it’s extremely comfortable. I tried it on my iPhone 15 Pro Max and it’s just too small to comfortably play games for me. Unrelated but I hate touch ID on my mini and would LOVE if they brought face ID finally!

This is great news for me. The iPad mini is unique in being the iPad most like a cell phone in form factor and thus most likely to be used in portrait for tasks that involve scrolling (watching video and playing games happen in landscape but don’t involve scrolling).

I look forward to the iPad mini 7. The mini is the only iPad I’m interested in (after trying all the different sizes). I prefer a MacBook for serious computing. The mini is perfect for ereading, light web browsing, movie watching and games.

Yeah, it would be nice if they just made the best product possible instead of creating these artificial distinctions between product lines that force consumers to make compromises, but "segmenting products" is what makes money, unfortunately.

Doesn’t make sense to me, because for all other iPads, apple has been favouring landscape mode?
No. The previous iPad minis, in particular, have the jelly effect (in a weaker form) in landscape and not in portrait. The smaller iPads — basically those without ProMotion — usually get used in portrait, except for gaming, video and photo viewing, where the jelly effect mostly doesn’t matter.

The seventh-generation iPad mini's screen assembly will be rotated to reduce the effect of "jelly scrolling" that some users complain about with the current model, according to a Weibo leaker with an early track record for disclosing accurate information about Apple's plans.

The account, known as "Instant Digital," claims that in addition to reduced jelly scrolling, the new iPad mini will also feature the A16 Bionic chip and front camera improvements.

"Jelly scrolling" refers to screen tearing, which can cause text or images on one side of the screen to appear to be tilted downwards because of a mismatch in refresh rates. It can cause one side of the display to look as if it is responding faster than the other side in a visual disturbance that is hard to ignore once noticed.

Apple says the phenomenon is normal behavior for LCD iPads. Since LCD screens refresh line by line, there is a tiny delay between when the lines at the top and lines at the bottom are refreshed. But while this may be normal behavior for LCD screens, it can appear more obvious when observed on the ‌‌iPad mini's smaller screen‌‌.

Users have generally only complained about jelly scrolling when the iPad mini is in portrait orientation. The issue is not reproducible in landscape orientation when scrolling, indicating this is a vertical refresh issue. According to the latest rumor, Apple plans to rotate the screen assembly to reduce the jelly scrolling effect in portrait orientation. Whether it will now become more prominent when the iPad mini is in landscape orientation is yet to be seen.

The seventh-generation iPad mini is among several devices that Apple could launch this month, the Weibo user goes on to claim. A modified first-generation Apple Pencil with a USB-C connector instead of Lightning and the sixth-generation iPad Air with the M2 chip are also apparently on the table for announcement toward the end of October. After evidence of a refreshed first-generation Apple Pencil with a USB-C connector was discovered in iOS 17.1 beta code, Instant Digital said that "Apple has not given up on the original Apple Pencil, and a USB-C version is expected to be coming soon."

The "Instant Digital" account has shared accurate standalone rumors about the Yellow iPhone 14 spring refresh, frosted back glass on the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus, spatial video capture on the iPhone 15 Pro, and more. That being said, questions remain about how much of the information shared by the user is original or accurate, but until a more long-term track record is established their rumors are worth highlighting.

Idk why people are making such a big deal out of those. Ever since I saw an article about this years ago, I tried to replicate it but couldn’t, so either you have to be doing something so specific, or it’s barely noticeable. People need to relax

Article says it will likely get an A16 chip. They should put the A17 Pro in it at least, then people would be able to really appreciate the Ray tracing GPU for gaming.
Given the yield issues reported for the A17, I don’t think Apple can afford to expand its use to other devices.

Yes, If they fail to put out a mini iPad (what for most is a fun device) that can't play the newest games they just showcased, I'm afraid that the potential for this device is null. - Unless what they said wasn't true and the A16 is capable?

Some people don’t see it, similar to how some people see no difference in ProMotion. That doesn’t mean ProMotion is useless, or that jelly scrolling isn’t very noticeable and distracting for many users.

I have Mini 6 for two years and never noticed any jelly effect.
I can’t unsee it. Mine is so bad I can’t use it to read on it. It just is like the whole right side of the page is scrolling at like 25% less speed. It made reading on it not fun which was my whole point in buying it.

I will not buy inferior Apple products ever again. If they can’t get something that simple correct, then don’t sell it. And if they do sell it, as buyers we must boycott the company’s crap products.

I used to love Apple. With Tim in charge, everything is about money not the best user experience. It’s a trade off to the point of not enjoying the experience at all. I still kick myself for not returning it within 14 days. Never again. Voting with my wallet in the future and never giving Apple another pass as all Tim cares about is his annual stock grants and ensuring the shareholders and board give him more and more for being a financial guy and not caring about innovation at all.

Highly unlikely that the A17 Pro that is in the 15 Pros will show up in any other products as is made on N3B. N3B is a stop gap and Apple will hold out for N3E mass production for anything that will have a longer production run than the 1 year of the 15 Pros. Rumors seem to point to the A17 being ported (and tweaked) for N3E or Apple producing multiple variants of the A18 (A18 Bionic and A18 Pro?) This might actually be the same rumor and Apple hasn't decided how it will market the two variants of the coming N3E A series chips. Either way I don't think we'll see the current N3B A17 Pro show up in any other products. True that the A16 isn't that big of leap and the benefit of the A16 would mostly just be bumping up to 6 GB of RAM, but I feel like Apple would be better off waiting for something newer than the A16 rather than put out a Mini 7 this fall.

God forbid they just give it a higher quality display so they don’t have to choose between portrait or landscape jelly scroll.
The cause of the jelly scrolling is generally thought to be that the screen and display controller were optimized for scrolling as though the mini was in landscape mode. When you scroll in portrait orientation, the updates have to be done 90 degrees across the actually physical pixel update sequence. The result is mismatched updates in adjacent parts of the screen. Not everyone’s eyes are sensitive to the effect depending on their response rate. This rumor says that they are swapping the orientation of the screen components to favor portrait orientation scrolling.
