If Ceramic does happen, there would be shortages for months and months. And what would be the difference in producing Ceramic, say compared to aluminum? I think the cost factors would be the scariest part.

Probably, never said it would happen. Just like the idea.

Excuse me if this is a dumb question, but wouldn't a ceramic phone shatter relatively easily? I mean it would be shattered glass backs all over again.

Also that looks like glue to me.
It's definitely not glue. I suspect this wouldn't be visible on other coatings and perhaps the tolerance for smoothness along the edges of the aluminum have to be significantly different for the Jet Black iPhone (although I'm not seeing this around the back camera).

Latest actual rumors (not just some forum members' pipe dream) suggest a return to glass body.

That's a bit of an oxymoron in itself. This early in the game most of the rumours are from guesses regardless of their origin.

So called experts like he who shall not be named, you can guess who I mean, make claims based on at best vague supply chain rumours. They get some things right but normally not that much more than the blindingly obvious things we can guess ourselves.

With Apples penchant for having more than one set of parts, or device, floating around the supply chain to throw them off the scent when there's something big in the pipeline it's just too early to tell what is most likely.

So in the meantime, we might as well have some fun baking up our own iPhone 8, chances are we'll come up with about the same proportion of correct guesses as the *ahem expert analysts :D

I just spoke with Apple - they insist (without seeing photos) that it's cosmetic damage from the user. After some back and forth finally was sent a link to upload some images. Between the difficulty getting a phone through the IUP and this I'd have to say this is the worst purchasing experience of an Apple product I've had.

I'm sure once they see it they'll know there's no way we could've caused that damage o_O I wouldn't even call it "damage". It was just how it was made.

Yes, that's true. However, common sense would dictate they're unlikely to use ceramic in the iPhone because it's substantially more expensive, if the Apple Watch Edition is any indication (it's an Edition for a reason). It doesn't make business sense to jack up the cost of a multi-mass-produced iDevice by several hundred dollars.

I'm not disagreeing with you there. All I'm saying is that this early in the game it's worth taking every rumour with a pinch of salt and lashings of vinegar :D

Hey, I got the same thing as you with my JB iPhone 7 plus and I don't mind. Phones are made by humans and nothing is this world is perfect. I saw the same thing on my mom's new iPhone 7 plus JB. My phone works perfect, don't have the hissing and even my screen isn't yellow or something. My phone is just perfectly working and if I may be honest. I like that this is some kind of reflecting. It makes the JB really unique and shining in some way, lol.

Would you risk to get a replacement with faults? With hissing? With Yellow screens or maybe scratches like hell? Well, I won't. I only replace when something is really broke. My previous iPhone 6S plus felt more then I did in my life and it got scratches everywhere. It's still sold for about 50 euros less then a iPhone in "a good condition". So if you don't mind, you don't need to replace it.

Sorry for the bad English, I'm from Belgium.

My 7+ looks just like yours in the picture. It bothered me when I first got the phone but not so much after a few days since I only see it under direct light. Not sure if I'm going to contact apple over the issue.

That's the thing, it isn't that noticeable in low light conditions. But in direct light, its extremely noticeable. Its like having a bunch of 3M on the side of the phone, at least in my case. Right now the options being provided to me are to return the phone. It seems no store has stock to exchange it for a new one, and Apple support claims they can't expedite a new one either. I am awaiting to hear from a supervisor who can hopefully correct the issue, as mine suffers from the that odd hiss as well.

Indeed. I don't contact Apple for this. The risk is too high to get a faulty replacement.

Mine also suffers from the hiss. I paid almost $1000 for a brand new phone and these type of things are bothersome. Maybe not to some, but to others it is. I one day plan to sell this phone as well. Those cosmetic irregularities definitely concern me because the same way I see them is the same way they will show up in the pictures when I go to sell it.

That hiss is a real problem. Mine doesn't have it, luckily. But there will always be something. Because perfection doesn't excist.

It's normal to see brushed grain on the lip, but mine is not as rough or periodic as yours. However, I have the standard 7 in JB so I have no idea if this irregularity is more common on the Plus.

It's possible that your photo makes it look worse than it really is. However, if you're expecting a smooth surface on the lip, don't. The brushed grain is supposed to be there.

Yeah mine seems to be pretty bad. Others in this thread have reported that their phone suffers from the same issue, but I have yet to see any other pictures. The best way to describe it is imagine having little pieces of 3M reflective tape all over the bezel.

Well, why don't you swing by the Apple Store and check out the display models? The lip should have a brushed surface, but if yours stick out like a sore thumb compared to the display models then get it swapped out.

I would be the last person on this forum to encourage a feeling of entitlement, but because there are plenty of new iPhones in circulation without hissing noises or rough looking finishes or dull yellow screens, I think it's reasonable to return such a costly device and try to get one that lacks such distracting flaws.

I'm not talking about some weird flaw like I saw a huge thread about a couple of years ago where people had to record in slow motion video in near dark (why on earth would anyone even think to try that in the first place) to find a stuck pixel. That is just insane levels of pickiness.

But some flaws are more distracting than others. And this one apparently slipped past quality control.

iPhone 7 series seems to have a greater number of quality control issues popping up than I'm used to seeing at new release time. I am waiting until stock is abundant before I commit to a purchase. I want to be able to easily get a replacement if I get a defective one.

Mine also hisses at me when under heavy load. It really doesn't bother me since I only hear it when I put my ear on the back of the phone. The phone is not perfect and I'm okay with the imperfections, at least for now.

LOL I'm glad I got the matte black. All this hoop-lah about jet black and they can't even design it and manufacture it properly. It's obvious this was a last minute rushed decision to hype up the phone and drive sales. The supposed "seamless" design isn't so seamless. Next year they will get this finish/color right.

Actually I can see it happening.

iPhone Edition™ - at an "exclusive" price ($2000? $5000? $10000?)
[doublepost=1475018783][/doublepost]Found this excellent article on Ceramics and the iPhone - https://www.quora.com/What-will-the-iPhone-8-be-made-of

Great article! Of particular interest from this article:

"However in my analysis the production cost of high yield Zirconia ceramic in sufficient quantities to produce a unibody in the form factor of the current iPhone 7 would actually be less costly than the current manufacturing, milling and CNC machining of the unibody in Aluminum for the iPhone 7, in high production."

I'm not sure why Apple is charging a $600 premium for the ceramic Apple Watch Edition then.

I figured a matte Black owner would say something

Here's a picture of this very same "issue" on my phone. Not sure if it's a defect or if it's supposed to be this way. My dad received the same phone as me but is not available for me to compare to at the moment. I called Apple nonetheless and sent pictures to a senior advisor who is going to look into the issue. Not really a huge concern for me but if it turns out to be a defect, I at least want it documented so I can get it replaced later on down the line.
