Just say no to Facebook integration. I think Apple sees immediate access to a huge user base but I, for one, like having a non-Facebook alternative.

I can't help thinking that iTunes is going to outlast Facebook, and the remnants of Facebook support are going to seem just as strange as all of the AOL support embedded in iChat.

Ping can be fun and useful. Musician Ryuichi Sakamoto uses it, to the joy of his fans. Through his threads he was able to learn about and correct a marketing blunder whereby his new album was missing two tunes in the USA. He sorted it out with Apple such that at least the iTunes Store version is complete.

If more musicians could participate, the service could be great. For now, it is in the infant stage.

Apple just needs to offer something that Facebook would value: give Facebook native integration in iOS and the social network will never be beat by any of its emerging rivals.

It's clear that Apple's iOS will lead the next phase in personal computer history. If Facebook is allowed to piggy back on it and Apple is able to piggy back on Facebook's success, both will win.

I hope that Facebook never enters my iOS or iTunes so please don't be so helpful. :)

Facebook is like going to Wal Mart to meet your friends.

At some point, there will be an app that facilitates the creating of a page(s) equivalent to a social network, only hosted in a personal cloud, not an aggregate cloud. As Sandy Bridge will support AES, security will be less an issue, and people would be more inclined to have private pages open only to their various circles of friends without the advertising business model.

Facebook is a popular social network because it is popular, not because it is irreplaceable. Someone will figure that out, and a new paradigm will take off.

well, whether you like it or not, until it's replaced by that 'supposed' next best thing, you'll have to deal it's presence. I simply do not agree with you that it's a fad and think it's actually here to stay. (you did create an account 10 years ago....that's a heck of a time and in cyber space, a lifetime!!!)

In addition, facebook has succeeded in a level of integration that has gone beyond what you can define as current trend.....hell even CNN has joined the facebook bandwagon. calling it a fad is equivalent to calling google-search a fad.

Myspace might not be as popular as it was but fact is it's still active and gets a lot of traffic.

simply because you do not use a product or do not see the purpose behind it doesn't make it useless (except to you). it will make more sense to say it's not for you or perhaps you fall outside the target audience. I know a lot of varied facebook users, students to pensioners alike and for me it serves it's purpose pretty well

I don't have to "deal" with it at all. It definitely is a fad and fails to appeal to the most prized demographic - mine. I don't have male friends my age who use it. I don't feel like I'm missing out on anything, in fact I think I'm able to do more without the rubbish it provides. Google has something other companies can't duplicate - just about anyone can duplicate what facebook offers. All I'm saying is that it isn't even close to as prevalent or necessary as it's made out to be. Advertisers gravitate towards it they're grasping for straws in this economy and because they buy into the lies about the number of "users". Yes, it's popular, but it will die soon.

Well, who bought "LaLa" and closed it? Dear Mr. Jobs, if you are tooo stupid for a music community feature, let it!!!

Oh...and please leave us alone.

Better? You mean more successful at selling its customers' data to interested parties who want to run marketing campaigns on iAd? That sort of "better"? Because, in case you haven't noticed it yet, that is ALL that Ping and Facebook are about. YOU - the user of those "services" - ARE THE PRODUCT.

Soylent Green is made out of people!

The irony is rich. Jobs seems to be getting a taste of his own medicine. Facebook doesn't need Apple, but Apple's ridiculous ping thing needs some help.

Yes, the man who has lead the greatest success story in the history of computing for almost 40 years, who now has the 2nd highest market cap in the world needs the Harvard moron who said "hey, you know what we need? A place to chat"

Dude got lucky. His net worth and all the measures of the company are one step away from being worthless. It's all based on future predictions... just remember how much Myspace was "worth" when it got bought out.
Now what's it worth?

It's trendy. It's interesting. There are some suckers that keep the idea that playing clickly clicky games and selling your semi anonymous analytics to 3rd parties will somehow have massive long term growth.
it won't.

Jobs is a Genius, like him or hate him. Zuckerberg got lucky and wants to think he's important.

It's Very Simple...

Douche Zuckerberg wants to exploit user privacy, Z' wants to trade and exploit the hundred million Apple account holders and our personal information to advertisers and the the web hero's in general...

Steve wont have a bar of that...

I fail to see how age is relevant?

Based on your post however, you seem to be implying age is relevant in some condescending manner, in which case, I'd be interest to know your net worth compared to that '26 y/o.'

That 26 y/o has probably accomplished more in the last 60 days than you will in your entire life. Jealousy is ugly, ignorance is worse.

DAMNNN thats what you call getting burnt!!

Lol That was very well said my friend. honestly the other poster deserved it based on such a dumb comment. What does age have to do with anything. It's not like he rapped his way to millions. The guy is a 26 year old genius, and steve jobs is lucky to be dining with a "kid" such as him. Dont forget jobs started when he was very ugly as well, so age doesn't mean **** when it comes to knowledge.

Thanks
AE

Two things:
1. What did they have for dinner?
2. Where was Sean Parker? That's the meeting I would kill to be present in :)
Add in Shawn Fanning and have Steve Jobs invite Metallica as the musical guest. Lars and Shawn sitting right across from each other. From one greedy douche to the next. Just one long staredown. I will never forget back in 2000 when Shawn was booed in the MTV awards and you can see Lars' reactions.

More entertaining than Dinner With The Schmucks. Throw in Sacha Baron Cohen as either Ali G, Borat, or Bruno as the interviewer.

No it isn't. Time spent flogging a dead horse is time that could be spent doing something productive instead.

Ping could introduce more sales so I believe Steve wants to make Ping more social where people use it more which has people seeing more of their friends music and also buying it.

Well the current product doesn't reflect even a glimmer of that.

To me, it's one of two things:
Either its going in the direction you suggest which makes it currently a half-baked product that has no business being released because its nowhere near finished. And it's not very "Apple-like" to release something like that.

Or it is what it is. And what it is right now isn't very exciting or useful.
