What part of "if you live where there's a very strong signal you won't see the issue" can't you grasp?

i live in a major metropolitan city, people complain the most about dropped calls and reception in major cities like San Francisco and New York, and I know of several people in Boston that complain.

Verizon is going to have a field day with this.

Is my map in your way?

What map.

To those think that some of us are whining instead of taking action by either returning the phone or just "dealing" with the issue. Let me say this.

I did take action. I emailed the CEO and I also spoke to Tech Support. And it wasn't to whine, bitch, complain or get free stuff. It was to alert them of an issue I was having.

I think everyone needs to take a deep breath and calm down. Anyone who bought an iPhone 4 today can simply return the phone to the store and receive a full refund. You'll then be free too find another phone that works better for you or go back to your old iPhone. It's really as simple as that. If you do want Apple to address the issue, then the best way to force them to do that is to return your phone, not complain on a message board.

Great post. What I don't understand is why anyone would keep any product that is not working properly. If you're happy with your new iPhone 4, keep it. If you're experiencing problems, return it and sit on the sidelines for a few weeks to see if any of this gets resolved.

I suspect most didn't realize there was a "problem" until they read on a forum that there was supposed to be one.

I'm left handed. Holding it normally. Without a case. In a marginal signal area.

Works fine.

Is this a functional problem -- i.e. actually a *noticeable* reduction in signal (i.e. call drops, data rate drops, etc.), or are people seeing bars move and assuming that means there will be call/signal issues?

I've had wonderful conversations with no bars, and dropped calls with full bars. What the bars say means very little if your phone still works.

Actually you are correct. It is a misnomer that "bars" indicate anything about signal strength. No bars/signal is one thing, but the difference in 1-5 bars doesn't necessarily reflect calls being dropped. Keep in mind, AT&T has been dropping calls like it's going out of style since day one. I would not be surprised if all the new iPhone owners are simply dragging AT&T's already overloaded system down, and this issue is not as remarkable as it may seem.

However, Steve Jobs' response was/is completely unnecessary and embarrassing for Apple and himself. He should be held accountable, especially as emails and texts can be read with any implied tone.

Their is no more reason to argue this issue. Apples has responded and we have 2 choices:

1) buy a case
2) return the phone
3) Wait for the iOS maintenance update where the bar meter has been replaced with a static GIF showing 5 bars at all times.

wow

im gonna wait to buy mine. Hopefully they can fix it. I wish they would have had a 8 mega pixel instead though, gosh there are phones out there with 8mp already.

lol does this happen on all iphone4s' or just some

But I don't want to hold it like a tard.

dude..?!
I know it might look weird on his photo, but if you have fairly large hands and you actually take a look at how you would usually place your fingers on the iPhone, the way he is holding it seems natural (not for surfing / using the interface, but for holding it up to your head to make a call)

Had asked my friend in the UK to buy an unlocked iPhone 4 for me and send it to me. Now after this, there is no way I'm buying an iPhone 4. Have pulled down the ad for my 3GS. Guess that will have to hold for now.

yg17 is not a "newbie" or a "troll".

This is for all those crying newbies trolling complaints about reception issue. TAKE THAT

It annoys me that someone's comments can be dismissed solely because of their join date. Plus, anyone who hasn't posted in a "PowerBook G5s Next Tuesday" tread is a n00b :p

Ahh, the good 'ol days...

First is on table second is being held, and I live in an area with good coverage

Yep

Stop being babies and looking for free ****. It's not that big of a deal, I know ALL of you will be getting some type of case for the pretty new phone and soon as you do the problem goes away. I had same issue this morning and I went to Best Buy and bought a 15.00 case that I was going to get anyway and woot no more issue.

Everyone is so quick to point out it's flaw's and not thinking about how good the phone really is. I love it and I'm not bothered by this issue one bit. It's a good phone. I bet all of you guys that are complaining about this signal issue will not take it back. Don't forget you still can but I bet you won't.
Shut up, nimrod.

My friend said to me today, that maybe the reason why this is happening is that when they were testing the iphone out in public they had it in a case to hide it from public eye

Ugh. Megapixels don't matter. The i4 has the best camera phone on the market right now.

I have to say that I seriously doubt this is going to be a real issue in the long run. Even with all the whining about the reception, over a million iPhones sold in one day is not too shabby! People read this crap all morning and still gladly waited in line. Just like all the complaining about Flash not being on IOS4, Apple shareholders will still prevail!

3) Wait for the iOS maintenance update where the bar meter has been replaced with a static GIF showing 5 bars at all times.

You know they will just update the software to mask the issue, what once was one bar will be shown as 4 and boom! fixed. It will be like all the other models just masking problems.

mine definitely goes down a bar when death gripping the antenna gaps, maybe sometimes two

but ive done countless speed tests in that position as well as laying flat with 5 bars and the up and down is equally as fast.. around 1300/1000

i might get a bumper just so i dont become OCD and look at bars all day haha
