UPDATE: Called Apple Tech Support. Clearly a known issue. I didn't call to complain or demand or even ask for anything - I called to let them know that I, too was experiencing this "non-issue."

They offered up a free bumper for my troubles.

But here's the "kicker." Before they send me my free bumper - they are requesting I sign something legal (not sure what it is yet as it's going to be emailed to me in the next 24-48 hours) that I would need to sign..

Now - I have no idea what's in the paperwork. And nothing against Apple who is at least trying to do something. But I don't think I'm inclined to accept their free gift if it means signing away any ability to take other recourse if in the future there's a recall/suit/etc.

Perhaps paranoid - but I would imagine the paperwork to be signed says something to the effect that the matter has been "resolved." as far as both parties are concerned.

Will let you know when I get the email/document.

this is starting to smell really bad, whatever you do don't sign anything

No one said you were imagining it, but you are jumping off the cliff by complaining about something that has been proven to be an issue with most cell phones. You've admitted that it is only a problem when touching the lower left portion of the phone, so don't touch the lower left. Or buy the bumper and get over it. There are many REAL problems in the world you could be bitching about.

The problem is that we payed $200 so that in order to use it you must hold it like a crab, and for other cellphones atleast when holding them in what is my normal grip it will still recieve and make calls, I'm not arguing that smothering a phone's antenna the reception shouldn't change but for 200-300 bucks you should get a reliable easy to use phone not an ipod touch when you hold it like many people are used to.

edit: not to mention the email response of an elitist d-bag

I usually never complain, but this is the first time I'm upset with an Apple release. Very sad day, I will be returning my iPhone 4 because of this inferior antenna design. I won't be hurting too much though, my 3GS is mint!

We should all get free bumpers. Enough said.

And once Apple finds a better solution, that will do.

You've never heard of the iPhone 3GS? It does the same thing. People, let it go. Cancer is serious, this is but a mild curiosity.

my 3GS does it to a mild degree. Never noticed before last night when I saw the posts about the iphone 4. However, it never loses signal or drops a call. It really seems that this issue is more pronounced on the iphone 4 than any previous iphone or any other phone anyone can point to. No, it's not cancer-level serious, but it's a real design flaw that will inconvenience many people.

Wow Apple may be on the threshold of being more hated than Microsoft.
I hold my phone in that awkward way so this looks like it won't be a problem for me but for many it will be and that's not right as expensive as these phones are.

Apple should make this right but I doubt they will, SJ arrogant response pretty much says that, but they should refund at least $100 for those with early models or maybe a slight case redesign with antenna and have it fixed at an Apple store for free or provide free overnight return and fix to those with no local Apple Store.

I bet you later down the line they will quietly fix this problem. Part my fault for being an early adopter. :(

I still think Apple planned on releasing the i4 in July but after the lost phone and gizmod buzz they moved the date up and didn't fully test it.

I just got off the phone with Apple iPhone support. I was told to change the way I hold my phone, or to deal with the issue by a low level peon. Like hell. I owned both the original iPhone and an iPhone 3G, and I never had problems remotely similar to this on those two phones. This is absolutely ridiculous. After I finished screaming at a senior support representative, about how ridiculous this is, and throwing the words FTC and complaint into the mix, I was promised to be called by a senior customer support representative within the next 48 hours. We'll see what happens...

Apple better fix this. This is absolutely asinine. I always had five bars on my iPhone, and on my 3G, no matter where I held the phone. But in the first 12 hours of using my iPhone 4, I have dropped 10 calls due to signal loss, and I have been basically unable to use the internet unless I hold my phone in a completely awkward position. No normal phone loses a signal just because of where you hold it. If I let go of the phone, I go back to full signal strength.

Total BS, and SJ's comments are just retarded. He needs to get over himself!

This x1000

They must have changed their story after this press release because earlier they were all ears and sent me an overnight replacement phone.

EFFIN RA TARDS!

I had to sign a paper like that when they were giving me a 4GS free for all my iPhone 3G problems. It said that the issue was now resolved, and that Its my problem if the monthly bill is higher because of the new phone.

After all these years Jobs always came across as a very friendly person, but now since Apple is the new Microsoft on the Market, he seems to be very arrogant.

And with those answers he just showed us how arrogant he became :(
Friendly? No. He puts on a happy face when he's doing Keynotes and videotaped high-profile interviews, but privately he's a notorious jerk. He's usually an ****** in his email responses (admittedly so are some of the people who mail him, but two wrongs don't make a right) and there's stuff on YouTube like a guy in a wheelchair who asks for Steve's autograph. Steve first tells him "no, sign it yourself". When the guy persists, saying he spent many hours on an airplane to get an opportunity to meet Steve (this was the opening of some Apple Store in NY), Steve said "oh, now lay the guilt. Start crying!"

You guys better watch what you say or SJ is going to have your AT&T accounts banned for being traitors to the Apple Nation.;)

Nonsense. Most people are right handed and don't normally hold the whole phone in the palm of their hand. And the lefty's don't usually hold it that way either. Just takes a bit of adjusting if you do.

Go watch the 6 minute iPhone 4 promo video direct from Apple. At around the 3:00 mark, you'll see a person using the phone an a manner that will cause this issue.

I think everyone needs to take a deep breath and calm down. Anyone who bought an iPhone 4 today can simply return the phone to the store and receive a full refund. You'll then be free too find another phone that works better for you or go back to your old iPhone. It's really as simple as that. If you do want Apple to address the issue, then the best way to force them to do that is to return your phone, not complain on a message board.

sure am serious. when people have an axe to grind they come on here...sign up...troll all over the place..and then go back to the cave. happens whenever something like this happens. give it time and people will learn this is NOT a big deal.

No, you're not serious.

I think the fix is easy!!!!!!!!!!!!!! why dont apple just change the bottem port cover to plastic? its not an antenna just a cover so if its no conductive no arc!

Just that the stainless would end at the two bottem seams!

yeah, seriously, if people aren't happy with the device, they can return it. It's that simple. Express your disappointment with your wallet by choosing not to keep it or buying it
