I agree with people who are upset about the reception issue. However, I take issue with the people who are calling Jobs "arrogant" because of his note. No other CEO would have bothered to respond to the inquiry in the first place--period. Would it be better if he were like every other CEO and never respond to customer e-mails personally?

Friendly? No. He puts on a happy face when he's doing Keynotes and videotaped high-profile interviews, but privately he's a notorious jerk. He's usually an ****** in his email responses (admittedly so are some of the people who mail him, but two wrongs don't make a right) and there's stuff on YouTube like a guy in a wheelchair who asks for Steve's autograph. Steve first tells him "no, sign it yourself". When the guy persists, saying he spent many hours on an airplane to get an opportunity to meet Steve (this was the opening of some Apple Store in NY), Steve said "oh, now lay the guilt. Start crying!"

I know. he was kinda having fun making others feel sad. The people surrounding him were kinda smiling, but I think it was more on an embarrassment smile expressing WTF Steve just sign the poor guys thing and stop being an ass. He admires you that much, and signing isn't going to take much time.

so intrigued by this issue, I'm doing some testing with my 3GS. sitting on my desk i get 5 bars. Picking it up causes the bars to drop, and it can go down to 1 bar if I hold it tightly. It's interesting - I'd noticed that I got fewer dropped calls when it was docked, but I never realized the reason.

However, the big difference is that I never lose all signal on my 3GS. If the iphone 4 goes down to no signal at all, that's a much bigger problem.

I have to tell you -- as much as I love this phone, if I had read Job's curt response to this issue before I'd bought the iphone and signed the d**n two year re-up, I'd be looking for a droid right now just out of plain anger and principle.

I couldn't say I get one for sure but I'd at least strongly consider it myself. Of course I really do enjoy my new iPhone 4 and the reception doesn't seem to be an issue for me in regular usage. I can get it to loose reception just like most/all here but I hardly ever hold it on the effected side. I get where you're coming from though.

I just watched the video and he was joking with the guy. I don't know what preceded the comments but he clearly signs the book, gives the guy a pat on the shoulder and tells him something to the effect of enjoy the store...lot of background hum on the video.

The thing that really ticks me off about Steve and the 4 is all the compatible MUSIC Related devices that was made for the 3 is now useless on the 4 with the new pinouts.

mics, audio inputs, etc. Devs I talked to didn't even see this coming. Some had soon to be released hardware that they was working on for moths.
Music heads are pissed. The 3GS Just went up in value, and I would not sell it for cheap if I were you..

I guess I missed this....what incompatibilities are you referring to? All of my old 3G gear continues to function normally for me.

A phone not working when you hold it in a certain way isn't a big deal?

I think that's a big deal, since a phone is designed to be held.

yg17 is not a "newbie" or a "troll".

This is for all those crying newbies trolling complaints about reception issue. TAKE THAT

UPDATE: Called Apple Tech Support. Clearly a known issue. I didn't call to complain or demand or even ask for anything - I called to let them know that I, too was experiencing this "non-issue."

They offered up a free bumper for my troubles.

But here's the "kicker." Before they send me my free bumper - they are requesting I sign something legal (not sure what it is yet as it's going to be emailed to me in the next 24-48 hours) that I would need to sign..

Now - I have no idea what's in the paperwork. And nothing against Apple who is at least trying to do something. But I don't think I'm inclined to accept their free gift if it means signing away any ability to take other recourse if in the future there's a recall/suit/etc.

Perhaps paranoid - but I would imagine the paperwork to be signed says something to the effect that the matter has been "resolved." as far as both parties are concerned.

Will let you know when I get the email/document.

Signing anything just sounds bad. Now I'm really interested to see what the outcome may be.

that's a good point, and a fair one. However, you have to admit, the first email did not come off well, at all.

This kinda stuff bugs me.. when people sit at home all day and try to find something wrong with it. Seriously if your mad about this answer me this. When will you ever hold your phone like this.... NEVER. If you hold it like a normal person (no offense to the handicapped) then you will be fine. instead of trying to find defects just enjoy this amazing product. I know I do...

What were u saying again?

Oh thats right....

Get A Case

Stop being babies and looking for free ****. It's not that big of a deal, I know ALL of you will be getting some type of case for the pretty new phone and soon as you do the problem goes away. I had same issue this morning and I went to Best Buy and bought a 15.00 case that I was going to get anyway and woot no more issue.

Everyone is so quick to point out it's flaw's and not thinking about how good the phone really is. I love it and I'm not bothered by this issue one bit. It's a good phone. I bet all of you guys that are complaining about this signal issue will not take it back. Don't forget you still can but I bet you won't.

By law you have 3 days to return any phone you bought by signing a contract, in which time your contract can be made null and void.

Really glad they sold out of pre-orders before I could decide if I wanted to upgrade, thus I'm now stuck/blessed with my 3GS.

Would have to say Apple's headed down a quick, slippery slope here... there's enough reports out there for me to believe this issue is much more obvious on the iPhone 4 thus its a design/engineering issue. If they weren't so secretive and more open in prototype testing, they might have discovered and fixed this pre-production (obviously the Gizmodo found stealth case helped hide the issue as it worked like the bumper does).

And for all those Droid screamers - while I'm not a fan of the Android interface, the upcoming Flash support is indeed something nice to see, something which Apple/Steve seems insistent to not allow on the iPhone ever (heck its my phone if I pay for it, let me put what I want on it, even if it kills the battery, it should be up to us!). Yeah I know - they want a closed system so they can control everything via the Apple store... BOO.

Oh come on man, I just watched this and it's not a big deal. Steve does say that but he's joking then he DOES sign it for him and tells him to take care!

Back on the iPhone 4, this was going to be my first iPhone purchase, but I didn't get my preorder in! Now I'm glad, going to wait this out and maybe even order a white one.

I find it funny how the Apple fanboys were bashing the Nexus One when it had connectivity issues, and now the new iPhone has a connection issue. Then the Apple fanboys say its a small issue, and you can pay $30 to fix a design flaw. This is certainly not normal for a phone. I'm not an Apple fanboy or an Android fanboy. I do own quit a few Apple products though.

Don't be surprised if they applaud the move if Apple rolls out an app for $29 which gives a video tutorial on how to hold the iPhone 4 like an H2SO4 test tube!

Wow, yea you're a tool. They only do that if the app is malicious, and you're an idiot if you bought it in the first place. I'm sorry Android is too complex for you. Have fun with your phone that can't make calls when held "improperly"

Ok again.. Read carefully and try your best to comprehend...

http://www.google.com/mobile/android/market-policies.html

Malicious is only one reason.

DO YOU REALLY BELIEVE THAT E-MAIL IS FROM STEVE JOBS??

I never said I bought one. Yet.....

Your mom asked when am I going to USE my tool on her again. I'll ask her to buy you one tomorrow after I am finished.

Why are you even on these forums ? Go back to 'open' Android forums...

Their is no more reason to argue this issue. Apples has responded and we have 2 choices:

1) buy a case
2) return the phone

the solution apple offered of relearning how to hold a phone is absurd. Nothing will hurt apple more than several hundred thousand returned iphones.

I will be returning if nothing else as a protest to apple that i will not pay a premium for par products. It doesn't have to be emotional (its just a phone)...hopefully apple will fix their next phone and if they do, i will buy it.

I suspect most didn't realize there was a "problem" until they read on a forum that there was supposed to be one.

I'm left handed. Holding it normally. Without a case. In a marginal signal area.

Works fine.

Is this a functional problem -- i.e. actually a *noticeable* reduction in signal (i.e. call drops, data rate drops, etc.), or are people seeing bars move and assuming that means there will be call/signal issues?

I've had wonderful conversations with no bars, and dropped calls with full bars. What the bars say means very little if your phone still works.

Perhaps only some phones are defective? Since they don't *all* have the problem.
