IMHO, since Apple moved their production to China (no offense to folks from the country), the quality dropped dramatically, I cant really recall so many problems with Apple products when they were manufactured in Singapore or other Asian countries.

Comparing the consequences of serious brain injury to getting a scratch on an iPhone? Get a grip! It's not an investment! Excuse the heresy, but it really is just a phone.

I considered the word investment. Uses the word valuable instead.

It is just a phone. But I like it. Not the flaw.

Oh please stop moaning, this is another rushed out product by Apple, just return the damn thing and wait till the issue is fixed.

Remember how many threads were created with yellow tint issue on IMac and guess what it seems that it was sorted after all.

Just return it and stop complaining.

In case this was directed at me (though I suspect it wasn't)... I'm not moaning really. I don't even own the phone (yet). I'm just getting in on all the fun! :D

China just manufactures what Apple design, no more no less. This seems more like a design flaw than a manufacturing defect, unless it turns out some coating was missing of course.

Dissss! Heehee. Like someone once said: you may not mean offense sir, but even with that added disclaimer, you probably will. Did you not here about the Foxconn tragedies?? Someone's bound to hear you. ;)

This isn't just about how you hold the phone when making calls - I'm right handed so when I'm using it as a phone, the bottom left corner is free.

However, because I'm right handed, I hold my iPhone in my left hand when I'm using it for anything else, with the bottom left hand corner wedged into my palm. I'm guessing this is how most right-handed people will hold theirs too when not using it as a phone. And I lose all signal. So if I'm using my iPhone and somebody tries to call me, tough.

And Steve - if I don't hold it like this; securely wedged in the palm of my hand, the odds of it getting dropped increase massively.

So what are we guessing... 2,000 post count by, say, 12PM EST?

Forgive me. It's easy for me to joke, being a lowly 3G owner still. But I'd like to change that...

I beg to differ, If I remember correctly, wasn't there an issue with thermal paste in laptops, also manufacturing defects across the board in Imacs in particularly: fingertips on glass screen, misaligned drive slots, and so on....

Apple's attitude is utterly disgraceful. I couldn't believe Jobs' email when I first read it, and I still find it hard to believe what is going on in these forums... people defending Apple over a phone that doesn't work when you hold it like a phone. Indeed, doesn't work when you hold and use it in the way that the folk in Apple's own adverts hold it.

Apple should be apologising, and refunding people or assuring them that a fix is being researched. There must be some kind of clear lacquer or similar material that they could just coat the antennas in to shield them.

just chipping in to say it does this on my iphone 4 32gb and i'm left handed so it is an issue. I go from 5 bars on 3g to 1 bar on edge by holding it in my hand in the same part of the office. I havent changed the way I hold the phone at all (I previously owned a 3GS).

They better start giving out free bumpers for left handed people or giving me some money back otherwise there is going to be a big backlash over this.

Something I emailed to steve:

Hi there,

I don't know what the likelihood of this email being read is. I am a pretty insignificant individual and you are quite the opposite. You have had your way with me: I am an apple convert. I bought the iPad. I lined up for the iPhone 4. Apple has really won my heart.

Apple, to me, is king of customer service. You are right, you don't do things first but you do them best. When I buy myself an apple product I know that I'll be happy with it in months to come, I know that Apple will look after me.

I'm not going to bore you and tell you about the antenna problem. I'm sure you already know about it, and I'm sure you've already seen the images pointing out the (apparent) hypocrisy and I'm sure you've realised the scope of the problem.

I just wrote this in an attempt to get my voice heard, to be happy in knowing that I can say I tried to air my concern, and that maybe, just maybe, you'll read a message like this and be spurred on to action to fix what makes an otherwise 'magical' device, not so 'magical'.

Thanks,
Rai
once a believer, always a believer.
I have faith.

I am gobsmacked that people are defending this. People buy one of the most expensive phones on the market and they can't hold it in a certain way or their call gets dropped and that's fine?

Nonsense. Some people are ridiculous. You should be able to hold the phone any damn way.

Take a million dollar rocket and stick it up your butt. :D Only if you want to.

'cept it's not just when you use it as a phone. Even if you're in landscape, or surfing the web/whatever, you're still likely to cover that corner one way or another. But apparently all phones have this problem, so like the man said, "non-issue".

"Brilliant engineering".

Apple is now officially the laughing stock of the mobile phone industry.

I don´t know, if I want to go buy the iPhone 4 anymore, just too embarrassing. :(

Something I emailed to steve:

Wow. Optimist much?

I guess you're thinking your email will stand out by "cathching...with honey". Unfortunately, we've no idea how Steve chooses which emails to read, let alone respond to. If he even read a handful of the millions of emails he's likely receiving now, he'd have no time to do whatever else CEO's do.

I'm guessing he must have people filter his mail and be like, "Mr. Jobs, this one's interesting" etc. Either way, I wonder how his inbox survives this sort of thing, especially now that word has been out for some time that said address is legit.

But you're probably doing yourself a better service than anything, just by not letting this stuff really get you down. If this thread is any evidence, there's a lot of doubt, confusion, and resentment flowing through veins of the collective apple consumer base.

I doubt your email will make a bit of difference, but I do tip my hat to you nonetheless, sir. Keep fightin' the good fight.
