He's not the only one that got that email from SJOBS.

Yeah I know but Apple are obviously holding back from making a direct official response for a reason. As things stand they can say that they were misquoted, or didn't send any emails. Like I say that may not have known the seriousness of the problem at the time. This could be wishful thinking on my behalf but I'm sticking with it for now because the alternative isn't very nice.

What facts am I ignoring? I've even acknowledged the issue exists.

I don't even understand your point about physics. It's already been proposed several times that the software is simply misinterpreting the inevitable but minor changes in the antenae when touched under certain signal conditions and therefore mismanaging or dropping the connection when it need not.

I don't see how keeping an open mind, not buying into every unsubstantiated thing I read on the internet and not throwing a tantrum worthy of a 4 year old about a phone makes me look silly?

People aren't throwing a tantrum. Many people just spent $200-600+ on a device AS WELL as signed a 2 year contract for something that doesn't work right! We aren't acting like 4 year olds.

If you purchased a new car and needed to buy another additional accessory to prevent the tires from falling off when driving, would you have ever purchased the car in the first place?

...

As for droid people posting here - its a free country and I can. My wife is an iPhone user and until recently I was also. I'm still a mac user as well.

Just because I use a different phone doesn't mean I cannot add to the dialogue.

Regards
Mike

Absolutely agree - plus, quite a few droid users have reported reception problems.

It's very interesting that this comes up as an issue with the iPhone 4 -- Just try it with an iPhone 3GS -- you will see the same problem, and nobody seemed to care about it when the 3GS was introduced, so why is it an issue now? "PICKY-PICKY-PICKY!!"

I guess its about time that people started to realize that, although Apple is known for awesome design, it is far from infallible. I would be very interested to see how many other phones from other manufacturers suffer from the same problem -- probably quite a few.

It is incredibly different. Not even remotely the same. Why? Because while the signal does indeed drop on my 3GS, the data keeps working. Look at the video in my sig, not only does the signal drop on the iPhone 4, but the data IMMEDIATELY STOPS.

And as I have said - just because it's been a problem for other brands or phones doesn't excuse the issue here nor (more importantly) does Steve's response.

Again - whatever helps you sleep at night. Whether it comes from the Apple PR machine or someone responding from the CEO's email address makes no difference to me. A company statement is a company statement.

And I am sure several lawyers would argue against your "hypothesis" that quotes can be made up. And I am sure if Apple did NOT issue those quotes to the media - the company would be the VERY FIRST to issue a law suit against any media outlet not quoting them correctly.

Or maybe you forget how litigious Apple can be?

Well we'll agree to disagree. It's strange that the official statement isn't on their own website don't you think?

The issue on the 3GS is not even CLOSE to the issue on i4. I NEVER had total signal loss whenever holding my 3gs no matter which way I held it. With the i4, it's guaranteed that i will lose all reception when holding it in my left hand.
I would say that's a MUCH bigger problem when you phone is basically rendered useless by a NORMAL, day-to-day activity. Don't you think?!? I mean, it IS a PHONE first.

QFT. New products are released ALL the time with issues and with inevitably clumsy PR responses initially, its a fact of life and as I said, if everyone had maintained a realistic sense of perspective about the company and this product when it was announced, we wouldn't be witnessing this unecessary carnage now. It's a phone. It apparantly has an issue or two. It'll be fixed or you'll be taken care off, that's all this would amount to if it was a toaster we were talking about here. It's hardly Apples fault the majority of its customers seem to be OCD types.

Non issue. Just avoid holding it in that way.

Contemptuous reply from the boss of Apple.
I've bought phones that cost a fraction of the iPhone 4
that have had better signal reception whatever way
you hold them.

I now have an expensive telephone that is brilliant in every way
apart from making a call. Ridiculous.

You clearly don't understand the problem.

It has indeed been proposed that that is the case. It seems likely, however, that if it were as simple as you're suggesting that SJ would have replied with a "Our bad, software update will be with you shortly" instead of how he did. I'm not saying it's impossible, I'm saying that based on the evidence we currently have there is no reason to think that that's the solution. It's merely a proposal by a random forum member.

I don't know how many 4 year-olds you know, but I suspect it isn't many. The tantrum of a 4 year-old is pretty far removed from the generally sensible discussion which has taken place in this thread (at least over the last few pages).

Not just a recall, a total recall

:p

Priceless!!! :p

We can agree to disagree. As I said - I have emails from Steve's account. I don't care one iota if it's him or some lackey in his office. If an email is sent from the CEO's account - to me, it's an official statement.

Yeah except the issue is the fact that you can only use it as a PHONE in "ideal" conditions... That's just wrong, no matter how you look at it.

Hey - Listen Up!!! Bumpers are FLAWED!!!

Bumpers were designed for STYLE ONLY. The fact that Bumpers may improve your reception is a DESIGN FLAW OF THE BUMPERS!!!

"Dress up your iPhone 4 with an iPhone 4 Bumper. Choose one of six colors — white, black, blue, green, orange, or pink — and slip it around the edge of your iPhone 4. With metal buttons for volume and power, two-tone colors, and a combination of rubber and molded plastic, Bumpers add a touch of style to any iPhone 4."

Why don't you wait until you personally are told this, assuming you are having this issue in normal use, rather than believing what you read from unsubstantiated reports on the internet?

Oh and if I buy a faulty product I calmly take it back for an exchange or refund. I know my consumer rights and abusing the CEO in a forum and disparaging the entire company as many here are doing is hardly an adult response.

OH COME ON DUDE!! Do you honestly believe Apple would openly post in the description..."hey, buy this piece of rubber with your brand new state-of-the-art iPhone. It'll make it WORK properly"... ???

I would hold the same arguement if I was in your position I guess.

Not in those exact words, but yes, that´s what they said. :apple:

...Except that it apparently won´t work with bumbers either, so we are all SOL.

This is not abusing the CEO in any way. I'm not Believing unsubstantiated reports on the internet... I'm believing my OWN phone, in my hand.
Yes we all know we can take the phone back. So it that the answer?
