Why don't you wait until you personally are told this, assuming you are having this issue in normal use, rather than believing what you read from unsubstantiated reports on the internet?

Oh and if I buy a faulty product I calmly take it back for an exchange or refund. I know my consumer rights and abusing the CEO in a forum and disparaging the entire company as many here are doing is hardly an adult response.

An email came from the CEO stating that we should hold the device a different way. That is a total BS solution. I am left handed, I can't become right handed just because Steve tells me to. I don't need to be personally addressed by Steve. He sends out emails KNOWING they will be spread all over the internet like a wildfire. This is just as good as a personal response from him.

Do you consider what Steve said to be an adult response? We are being very calm given the situation. He is being a jerk, simple as that. And again, look through my post history if you want, I am one of the biggest Apple fans in the world.

So has anyone been able to get a free bumper out of Apple? I already have mine ordered and it is en route. I'm thinking of taking it to an Apple Store and requesting some kind of credit. Not that I care about this non-issue issue since I have no problem. I just like free stuff.

The complaining is getting annoying now. I understand some may be having this issue but until there is a fix either deal with it or take the phone back and get something else.
Until there is a fix stick a small piece of clear tape over the exposed antenna which will fix the issue. What Apple is going to probably do is put a small cover over the exposed antenna to keep contact off of it.

Go to a different thread then. The title of this thread invites everyone who is having this issue (myself included). If you don't want to read about it: leave. I am not sticking tape on my phone because I am left handed and it won't work otherwise. Sorry, but I won't. I have a case (which I always intended on getting anyway), but that isn't the point. I shouldn't need to have a case, or tape.

I lose reception when holding the bottom corner, like many people here, but I just took my first call on iPhone 4 and thought I'd put it to the test.

I held it as normal with my fingers bridging the gap that's causing the problems BUT MY RECEPTION STAYED AT 5 BARS.

However, MY 3G SIGNAL COMPLETELY DROPPED!!!! It went down to Edge then nothing. when I hung up and placed my phone down it came back!!!!

So, is this a case that making a call and bridging the gap cuts out some element of the antenna - ie the data - because it's not needed, but when holding to typically use data, the voice element goes????

Just tried that and got the called failed, so no that doesn't work.

I don't have the ip4 yet, but I've got one on order. I've owned quite a few Mac products in the past, including the last three iphones, and all have been great.

I've been following this saga as it has unfolded, mostly because I'm chomping at the bit to get my new phone. I'm reconsidering that.

I got a call from a friend last night from his new iPhone 4. Three seconds into our conversation, the call dropped. I already knew why. We reconnected, and the first words out of his mouth were, "The reception on this phone SUCKS!" He has already dropped more calls in one day with the new iphone than he can remember dropping, ever, on his 3Gs.

I went over to his house, and we were able to recreate the problem every time with just the tip of a finger on the antenna seam.

Furthermore:

I still have my 3Gs. For the life of me, holding the phone every way I knew how, I couldn't get it to drop any bars. I'd even TRY to make the 3Gs lose signal, and it wouldn't. On the other hand, my buddy's IP4 would drop to nothing with a fingertip. This is in the exact same location, at the exact same time.

For those doubters out there:

This is not a case of people over reacting. For many people, myself included, our phones are a direct line to business and money. Dropping calls is unacceptable. PERIOD.

Steve's response is just asinine. They tout the most highly advanced phone in the world, yet, we need some sort of training class to hold it correctly? Hogwash.

Don't bury your heads in the sand, folks. This flaw will go down in history and find it's place right next to New Coke as the greatest product failures of all time.

A phone that you can't hold without a protective case? Really? REALLY? Unbelievable.

Wow really? I thought this was more of a batch issue possibly. Surely I can't be the only one? Or maybe perhaps people who's phones don't hve the issue don't bother disussing it because there is nothing to discuss. Seeing as mine dosent do it, I would be inclined to think it may be a certain batch and perhaps you could get a replacement that works properly?

That is the hope, but that will probably be some time out as the problem is very widespread, and there is already a major shortage of phones.

Also has anyone noticed that while texting using two thumbs, you cannot help but touch the left hand corner.

As a right handed person who holds his phone with the left (and now the wrong way), I find his statement very offensive. How about the fact that I can only hear in one ear, guess which one? :(

The bars on my phone go down to "No Service" when I touch the band. I love my iphone 4, but this isn't on if I can't do basic functions like call someone. :(

Dude, relax. If no one told you this was an issue I doubt you would have ever realized it. I bet the vast majority of the folks complaining about it are now holding it in the way that causes the problem when they did not do so before.

I have spoken to man people yesterday and not one left or right-handed person holds this phone like that.

There appear to be two variations. On "good" phones, you lose maybe a bar or two, and maybe none if you have a strong signal. Its caused by blocking signal, not by shorting antennas.

On "bad" phones, the coating is missing on the antenna (I surmise), so even with 5 bars you completely lose the signal if you short the antennas.

I own 2 "bad" phones, and a friend owns a "good" phone, and in my house with a microcell we can replicate the problems repeatedly. No matter who holds his phone, it maybe loses a bar. No matter who holds my 2 phones, they drop to "searching..." and calls fail.

Would love to see a video showing the two phones side by side reacting differently to the problem. I guess you could video with the spare iPhone?

New member here....I'll try not to complain

Got my i4 Weds on AT&T network. Noticed terrible signal and thought I was crazy. Found these threads. I'm experiencing EXACTLY what everyone is describing and what is shown in the threads.

Tried clear tape on the antennae....complete fail
Tried electrical tape....better, but still a problem

Called Apple support. I'll have a new i4 by today and a courtesy bumper in a week or so. I put my i4 into an old rubber 3g case and the problem went away, so I'm optimistic that there will be at least a short term fix with the bumper. But a permanent solution is needed. The Level 2 support guy admitted a problem. Apple does not have their hand in the sand, aside from perhaps Mr. Jobs

I've always found Apple's tech support to be amongst the best in the industry. Try calling Adobe for support if you want to see a situation handled poorly.

I reserve the right to complain, but at this point I accept that I'm an early adopter and trust the situation will be rectified in time.

ps: I do find Mr. Jobs' comments to be arrogant and condescending

As I said - they offered me a free bumper for reporting the issue without me asking They also said that to collect it - they would send some "legal" for me to sign in the next 24-48 hours.

No doubt this "legal" is to sign away any rights to further claims and that this matter would be considered "settled" by both parties.

I'm not signing. And I'll pay for my own bumper before signing anything that says it's resolved.

Then take the damn phone back and get something else. Is it that hard? No amount of complaining is going to make the problem go away.

Wow, interesting. I would not sign anything either as $30 isnt enough to waive rights for some potentially future remedy.

I actually hadn't read a single thing about the reception issue until I got my phone and until I noticed I was having it.

So while SOME people might be "following" - I, for one, am not. Thanks

+1

I think if people really need a phone that NEVER drops a call then the iPhone would be LAST on my list. If it is so important for money and work, etc.

Apple does not force anyone to buy their stuff so the complaining is getting beyond childish and annoying. If I buy a shirt that has a defect, I return it and buy something else. There are many options for people to switch. This issue is not big enough for me to return the phone. If it was, i'd get something else that is more reliable for CALLS and on another network.
