I am curious how one confirms an email from Steve Jobs?
Why out of all the emails he must receive on a variety ,of issues does he respond to this one?

I don't believe this came from him and this was fabricated by the thread starter for whatever reason they have.

None the less i do not debate there is a problem with some phones. I experienced this problem after many attempts at duplicating it. I had to really firmly clench the phone in my hand to see the signal diminish. Almost as though i was squeezing the reception out of the phone. Thankfully i do not make phone calls like that so I am not seeing this as an issue for me.

Now i have seen worst cases on YouTube and such and if this issue affects your phone while holding the phone in a position that is comfortable for you, take it back to Apple, get another and see if it does the same thing. If it does then perhaps you need to consider another cell phone and return this one and get your money back.

Or, you could use a case, a bumper, which I personally think are atrocious but they do seem to alleviate the problem for clinchers, or and here's a novel idea, use a headset and keep the phone in your pocket. That would solve the problem totally and just think you might reduce your risk of getting brain cancer from unhealthy radioactive waves.

New member here....I'll try not to complain

Got my i4 Weds on AT&T network. Noticed terrible signal and thought I was crazy. Found these threads. I'm experiencing EXACTLY what everyone is describing and what is shown in the threads.

Tried clear tape on the antennae....complete fail
Tried electrical tape....better, but still a problem

Called Apple support. I'll have a new i4 by today and a courtesy bumper in a week or so. I put my i4 into an old rubber 3g case and the problem went away, so I'm optimistic that there will be at least a short term fix with the bumper. But a permanent solution is needed. The Level 2 support guy admitted a problem. Apple does not have their hand in the sand, aside from perhaps Mr. Jobs

I've always found Apple's tech support to be amongst the best in the industry. Try calling Adobe for support if you want to see a situation handled poorly.

I reserve the right to complain, but at this point I accept that I'm an early adopter and trust the situation will be rectified in time.

ps: I do find Mr. Jobs' comments to be arrogant and condescending

If you are having a reception issue dont request a new phone right now because the odds are you could be getting another faulty one. Its probably from the same batch that just came over from china that has not been fixed.
Best to wait it out a week or two and see what Apple comes up with.

Am I the only one this dosent happen to? I've held it for minutes at a time both with and without my bumper and my signal stays constant the entire time in both instances.....

Try to have some sweat on your palm and see the magic happen:p

The fact that some phones have the issue, while other phones don't puzzles me. They should all have it. I don't think signal strength is the issue, as I have full bars when it happens.

A Bumper won't solve this issue!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Watch this (my video)

Are you people not paying attention here?

Apple released a new "non-conductive" case for iPhone 4 called iHand which resolves all signal issues.

Jobs, It's pretty nice, you can wrap your headphone cord around the fingers, flag-down cabs, scratch that impossible spot in the middle of your back and even use it to hold your girlfriend's hand at the movies so you can still use both of your hands for...ummm... well hold your soda and popcorn I guess. The possibilities for this case are endless, it's amazing!

"Non issue" or issue?

Jobs vs the people.

I guess the people win.

People here means 'potential customers'.

Jobs made a stupid and insensitive comment about a suspicious product defect and it seems, he upset even many hard core fans.

Well done, Jobs! You are too successful for your own good!

just went to the apple store, they gave me a new phone but it did the same thing, he said just keep the original phone and he will get me a bumper but the had none left, so he said i can order one and i told him i refuse to pay for it, he then said well i don't know what to say call the 1-800 number, just got off the phone with them told them i wanted to speak with a supervisor and he is going to send me a free bumper

I think if people really need a phone that NEVER drops a call then the iPhone would be LAST on my list. If it is so important for money and work, etc.

Apple does not force anyone to buy their stuff so the complaining is getting beyond childish and annoying. If I buy a shirt that has a defect, I return it and buy something else. There are many options for people to switch. This issue is not big enough for me to return the phone. If it was, i'd get something else that is more reliable for CALLS and on another network.

Big difference between a phone that NEVER drops a call and one that drops a call if your finger slips!

Still cannot replicate the issue. I squeezed it pretty tight and I think i lost one bar but then it came back. Tried with a slightly damp palm too. Nada.

My old phone NEVER had reception in my office. I have perfect, 5-bar reception in my office now. Maybe some iphones just are defective.

That said, I will still try and get some free bumps out of Apple for my time and effort.

As the thread starter I'll respond to you. Personally I really don't care whether you or anyone else believes it came from Steve. And to be honest - I don't believe it came from STEVE personally. It did, however originate from Steve's Corporate Email Address. And I'm not the only one that got similar responses - feel free to google around. It's been posted/verified in several places.

I have no reason to lie. And you can look at my history here to see that I am a straight shooter. But believe whatever you want. That's your right.

I don't disagree.
But I now have a case number and an email correspondence with my Level 2 tech who said he'll keep getting me new phones until the situation is resolved. So I'm not worried. He sounded eager to have my phone back - I suspect so they can do some hands-on troubleshooting.

I have this overwhelming suspicion that they discovered this issue pretty late in the game and still wanted to release around their usual yearly time.
Sorry, but I doubt it. This was put together by engineers. Any engineer with an educational level above high school graduate would've taken one look at the blueprints and said "umm... that's gonna screw up reception if you put your finger there and bridge the antennas". Upper level management (and/or Steve himself) must've stepped in and said "yeah, we know. But screw it, we want the phone to look like this and if there's any trouble down the line we'll deal with that later. We're confident that our brand strength and iPhone desirability will overshadow any construction flaws".

This was not an "oops" moment, they started working on this phone after the original 3G was released in 2008 and they've had aeons of time to solve any construction problems had they wanted to solve them.

I'll give it three days before you find yourself in a location where the problem does occour. Your iPhone is just as broken as everyone elses.

hmmm

Intrigued by the "coating" issue here. Did Apple's slave-labour manufacturer in China mess up here?

How can you tell if you have the coating or not? Mine seems to have no obvious sheen on it and I lose reception quite badly.

I thought this was rely funny:

"For many people, myself included, our phones are a direct line to business and money. Dropping calls is unacceptable. PERIOD."

If this was the case for me I would either have gone to another carrier with a proven reliable network like Verizon, where I had experienced maybe one dropped call a year.

Any businessman who would depend on and entrust their livelihood in the hands of AT&T should have their heads examined.

If they want it to be a non-issue, then they should include the "bumper" for free with all iPhone 4 purchases. Otherwise, their response is COMPLETELY UNACCEPTABLE.

An email came from the CEO stating that we should hold the device a different way. That is a total BS solution. I am left handed, I can't become right handed just because Steve tells me to. I don't need to be personally addressed by Steve. He sends out emails KNOWING they will be spread all over the internet like a wildfire. This is just as good as a personal response from him.

That's why he responded this way, knowing it will be spread all over the internet. Maybe that will teach people a lesson not to use his personal email as tech support line.

Dude, relax. If no one told you this was an issue I doubt you would have ever realized it. I bet the vast majority of the folks complaining about it are now holding it in the way that causes the problem when they did not do so before.

I was unable to make a phone call, from my house, on Wednesday afternoon. I held the phone the way I always held it. This was well-before I had read any reports of this design flaw. Sorry, when I'm incapable of initiating a phone call or having a conversation for more than a few seconds without the call dropping, I indeed do notice it.

I have spoken to man people yesterday and not one left or right-handed person holds this phone like that.

You imagine that somehow proves there's not a problem here?

Thank you for your response and allowing me to have my own opinion, that's comforting.

However my question was really not answered. How does one verify it came from an apple corporate account?

AAPL stock: wait and see

Market down 70 probably has something to do with it.

AAPL is down slightly along with the rest of the market.

The Street is often slow to catch on and is still dazzled by yesterday's super-hyped launch and long queues outside Apple store, but when investors and traders realize this fatal defect (a $700 smartphone that can't make calls for f*%k's sake!) may cost Apple hundreds of millions if not billions in lost revenues I guarantee you'll notice because AAPL will plunge 5%-10% in minutes. Wait until the first sell-side analyst issues a note on this stuff and you'll see.

I'll be honest I don't really get this attitude, I've had iPhones since they were released and I like then. Therefore I want one, but I want one that WORKS! I can't see how that is too much to expect. If Apple truly wanted to put out a product that didn't function properly and that was actually their intention and it said that in the manual then fine I've made a mistake I'll send it back and get something else! But this obviously isn't the case is it

Personally it has nothing to do with calls, I lose everything and its only really affecting me for data as thats when I hold the phone in my left hand. I can't see why as a consumer I don't have a right to complain and how you can justify telling people that!

when i was in the apple store everything was working fine, i said of course now its not dropping any bars but when i turned 3g to off it started when i held it in my left hand
