Just called support back (after being dropped the first time). Katie was very nice and offered possible solutions with restore, re-seed SIM card, ect (obviously they have not updated their script yet), but told her I have tried all these. She had me on hold waiting for a second level tech to schedule a replacement. I asked her how many calls like this she has had today, and she said honestly this was her first. Anyway, she tried again to deflect me to the AT&T store for a SIM card, I didn't accept it. After being on hold for another 10 mins, she said second level isn't taking any more calls about the reception because they are aware this is a widespread issue and Apple will be releasing an announcement about the fix later today. I said, so there will be a fix out later today? She repeated 'an announcement about a fix'.

At least I have a case number in now and added to the growing numbers telling :apple: this is a real issue for their customers.

Wish that doctor would've said "Steve, that liver of yours... it's a non-issue".

LOL .. i am planning to get iphone 4 this Sunday. I hope i get without yellow spot and signal problem .. but it seems impossible with rare number of lucky people without those problems.

Sorry I can't help but feel like people are "just looking for free stuff" when I read this. They said a fix will come shortly and you kept asking for a free case. Just does not seem right, especially with your "They will ship you a bumper!" Note the "!" as in "WOOT I got a case for free!"

I dont intend to buy a bumper .. I would rather buy a case that cover the back. Sure some people will try to get bumper for free, i would try too. Apple is charging too much for the bumper .. is the bumper worth that much?? It is frustrating for some people who have to use phone all day to make important or emergency calls .. not in my case.

Steve has a mighty long finger there.

OMG!! its just been on bbc news in the UK and they showed it live doing the same thing when he held it! THIS IS A MAJOR FLAW i never seen iphone make it to the tv over a problem!

All this stuff about the problem being due to "bridging the gap" in the external antenna is a bit suspicious to me, since firstly, I have always had this exact problem with my 3GS, and secondly, this video:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RFWVih5e_J0

... shows that the bumpers (which are supposed to insulate the antenna) don't resolve the issue.

And Jobs' retort about "all phones being affected like this" is not true: just now, to test once again, I had my 3GS in my left hand, dropping reception strength, as usual, and an ancient (c. 7 years old) Samsung cellphone in my right, holding on to 5 bars without wavering (and the latter I can entirely cup in my hands without affecting the signal).

Not sure if it's been posted or not... but I seem to only suffer this loss of signal issue when the iPhone is running on 3G, not when it's on 2G. Try turnning off 3G and see if the problem persists. Doesn't for me. If I switch 3G back on, problem returns. Strange.

Some people also say that it loses (3G or 2G -- not sure) signal only when Bluetooth is on. Can someone, who has signal issues test this? Because I only have 2G net and probably a cell tower nearby.

Wouldn´t it be funny if you were having a heart attack and trying to call 911, but your call would get dropped because of this "non issue" and then you would die! Wouldn´t that be nice? :)

This is good news. At least we'll get some official statement besides 'Hold it differently'.

This really belongs in both this thread and the wallpaper thread. But I made this for myself to remind me of Steve's solution. I hope it helps others as well :)

Or, even better! Steve Jobs trying to call for help!

Hi

Well I am on tmobile (UK) and am having the same problems as the guy on youtube with the bumper - bought a rubber case today from 02 and it made little difference - calls keep dropping out and the signal fluctuates depending on the way you hold it.

This IS a problem for Apple and you have to suspect they knew about this after production started, hence the reason for Apples foray into manufacturing cases (bumper). I find Apples response bizarre - all phones suffer from attenuation, so we thought we would put the aerial on the outside where it is most likely to be a big issue????

I love Apple as much as the next fanboy, but this really is not good enough. It is, after all, a phone but at the moment I am using it as an iPod touch.
:(

They'll still look incredibly foolish for Jobs initial response. It makes the company look arrogant and the initial Jobs response and subsequent Apple statement was extremely condascending.

Fapdroid loverboys would be happy, for sure.

An announcement about a fix later today! Interesting. Let's hope the announcement isn't "Ya... so... we thought about it and we're sticking with what Steve said. No big deal. Just hold it differently.".

It would be funny that someone having a heart attack tried to call but get dropped. The people around tried to call but get dropped too .. or iphone 4 kill that person or blackberry save the day heehe.

iPhone 4 Reception - Better or Worse?

http://www.engadget.com/2010/06/25/the-jimmy-fallon-test-is-the-iphone-4-dropping-less-calls/

Engadget and even Gizmodo are saying that call drops are fewer with the iPhone4. And locations which were previously dead spots are no longer dead.

A guy I know is saying the WiFi on the iPhone 4 is working in his garden, while none of his other devices will get a connection.

This is confusing. Sounds like some engineers need to get to the bottom of this problem.

Re: a few comments above.

1 - HTC making excellent smartphones, I don't deny it. If you consider their products better for your tastes, I recommend buying them instead. This isn't a defence of Apple's antenna blunder, but indeed a solution for you personally. Hoorah!

2 - Form vs function. Are you kidding? Of course you can't have both. Ultimate function means components of certain size that would be out of place in the Apple design gallery. For example - the HTC Evo. A super-spec phone, but significantly larger than the iP4 with much more plastics used. Apple hates bulky plastic things, hence why they don't sell anything that exceeds a minimalist aesthetic design brief. Are you unaware of their product line, or something? Again, find a phone that suits your needs - this isn't an excuse for the antenna blunder either.

NGH
