I can't believe how short-sited ppl are. Has it every occurred to anyone that Steve made those initial responses before he or Apple realized there was a real widespread issue that required further investigation.

If Apple comes out this afternoon and says we found the issue and they have a realistic fix for it, there will be a lot of ppl that feel like idiots.

Its good to see we have 1600+ posts and counting rapidly before Apple as even had a 'real' chance to respond once they realized there was a bigger issue than a few emails to Steve.

Jobs wasn't born yesterday. Nor did he just become CEO.

I, for one, will not feel one bit silly or an "idiot" when/if Apple reveals a fix.

You're giving to much credit to Apple and Jobs here. Sorry - but you are.

If he wasn't sure if it was an issue or if they hadn't gotten data to make a determination - it was just as easy for Steve to email me back "Not aware of an issue. Will investigate"

or simply "Not aware of any issue"

He didn't write that. His words speak for themselves.

I'm not Giving Apple/Jobs too much credit. I'm giving them the benefit of the doubt. For Christ sakes, the thing just launched a little more that 24hrs ago. I'm not saying anyone should be supporting Apple/Jobs and neither should they be bashing them. Give this thing more than 5 seconds to play out before passing judgement. Thats all I'm saying.

Why would he say hes not aware when there is an issue? Instead, he told the person to hold the phone a different way, which solves their problem. I'm not sure if its a hardware or software issue, but either way, what were you expecting? Jobs to reply "yeah, come to the Apple store for a blowjob"?

Yes, search for a "antenna key test".

Just by placing a key there, the signal got lost. Nice!

There's a video somewhere of a key being used to bridge the gap between the steel bands. It does cause signal drop down to 0.

I have seen it done with a key:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zvH-i7rKPJc

It doesn't have any effect at first, but he slightly adjusts the key position at 1:37 and the phone goes from full bars to one in 30 seconds.

Edit: I type too slow. jb007clone beat me.

using a key does not make me loose signal either

Thank You

I just wanted to say thank you to all of the early iPhone 4 adopters who have voiced their concerns to Apple regarding the reception issues.

Going forward, reporting any issues is the best possible action we can take. Spreading the word about the apparent design flaw to other potential iPhone 4 customers and current users is what makes this capitalist market unique.

To those of you who currently own the iPhone 4 and are frustrated - stick to the plan! Call Apple, file a complaint... the more pressure you put on them, the more likely you are to get what you paid for - a phone that maintains a strong signal no matter how it is held or positioned.

I, amongst many other users on this forum, do not live in the U.S. (I live in Canada). While initially we were disappointed that the iPhone 4 was not receiving the same launch date as the U.S., we now know why. The launch was rushed.

To all American, German, British, and Japanese iPhone 4 users - Keep up the fight! As supportive customers, early adopters, and both casual and intensive users of Apple products, you deserve better than this!

And one more thing. In the coming hours, days, weeks, as Apple looks for a resolution, be wary of their attempts to bury this issue. If the 'fix' isn't really a 'fix', but a temporary solution (or a software fix, as some have suggested) make sure Apple knows you are unhappy. The last thing they want is to lose their increasing influence over the mobile phone sector.

Look, its a problem simple as that. What we're all complaining about is Apple's response "hold it differently". I didn't know we needed "Phone Holding 101" to show us how we can avoid an inherent problem with the signal reception. With all the media exposure Apple needs to make a definitive statement on how it will rectify the issue.

I don't even know what your posts means. And given that the emails in question were sent to me (I'm the original poster) my point was that he didn't have to reply. He didn't have to say there's no issue. Nor suggest I hold the phone differently. He chose to make those statements.

So for someone (previously in this thread) to say that perhaps he wasn't aware of any situation and that's why he responded to me is silly.

A CEO (granted not probably who responded) would hold off saying anything or perhaps even asking what specifically I meant rather than providing a "solution."

No. Steve Jobs and Apple as a whole are brilliant marketers. They choose their words VERY carefully. Anyone with any PR or Marketing savvy can tell you based on keynotes, press releases, videos exactly how savvy they are. Every move is calculated. So for a response to fly out of his email address like that was deliberate.

From Apple Support: Apple's second level support is aware of the issue and will be making an official announcement about the issue later today.

whenever i unlock my phone, just before the wifi initialises and i get the icon, the signal auto drops down to 1 bar from 5. and then if i try to place a call, it usually fails to connect.

so many issues, so buggy! Apple, make a bloody announcement already!

If I cover the corner, signal strength does drop, but I've yet to have it drop a call, and I've tried.....a LOT.

Where did you see this?

A few people have been told this by 2nd line support, but probably to shut people up. I doubt they have real information on when an announcement will be made, if any.

I wonder what channel Apple will make an announcement...

lol... if Verizon is smart, they'll do an ad campaign with the Droid phones telling people Hey look, I don't care how you hold me, i still work! .. I can already see the different shots of people holding the droids in different ways.

what a mess..

Since Apple apparently isn't bringing back Justin Long for the "Get a Mac" ads, maybe Verizon should hire him for a "Get a Droid" campaign. He could say "I'm an iPhone" and demonstrate exactly how you have to hold one to get reception.

Look, its a problem simple as that. What we're all complaining about is Apple's response "hold it differently".

There's Apple's new ad campaign! We've gone from "Think Different" to "Hold it Different".

Why does every issues thread have to attract all the "Glad I waited" people? Just a hint, those comments do not help anyone but yourself.

Also, they're still WRONG by saying that. No matter what issues there are - literally no matter what - iPhone is still the best phone out there. No propaganda, and not fanboi crap. It's that good. ...and they're still using a lesser phone.

Have fun.

Come on! Can't the French help this time too? :)

So the rumor is that Apple is going to announce something later this afternoon about it. Let's wait and see what they have to say.

For the record: Bumpers, tape, nail varnish, etc. are not a "solution".

The product should work as sold.

Not in any DIY, fork-over-some-extra-$$$-for-accessories way.
