Consider yourself lucky then. Perspective? Go search Youtube for iPhone 4 reception issues. Go to Engadget, Gizmodo and several major news websites. How's that for perspective?

The point is "a certain way" shouldn't even be an issue. People have been holding their phones 'a certain way' since the iPhone was released (and, of course, even before that) and have never had this type of massive signal loss.

The solution shouldn't be change the way you hold the device. That mentality shows you really where the user stands on the totem pole.

Thats not a solution. Its a workaround.

Two things about perspective...

1) Have you ever seen more widespread reports of a problem with an Apple product? Have you ever seen dozens and dozens of YouTube videos successfully demonstrating the same flaw, coupled with worldwide mainstream news coverage by the likes of CNN, WSJ, FT, CBS, BBC, MSNBC, FOX and NYT? Have you ever seen this many Mac Rumors members reporting the same problem and being this overwhelmingly negative about it? Loyal Apple fans of 30 years saying "enough is enough"? No, you haven't. So the perspective you should consider here is that this issue is different from all those you saw in the past, where people whined for a couple of days on forums and then forgot about it.

2) In order to gain some perspective on how f***ed up this issue is, let's detach the whole thing from Apple and the iPhone. Let's instead use, I dunno, Ford and the new Ford Taurus. Let's say that people go out and buy the new Taurus and discover that if you touch the steering wheel in a certain spot, the engine stops. The Ford CEO then responds that it's a "non-issue" and that you simply should avoid touching the steering wheel there. Other drivers of the new Taurus would tell you that you can fix the problem easily by buying one of these...

...or simply wear rubber gloves when you drive.

Would you consider any of this remotely acceptable? My guess is that you wouldn't, but rather that your jaw would drop and you'd just sit there in amazement looking like a birdhouse.

That's a Nissan.

:D

I wouldn't. But instead of crying on a message board like a schoolgirl, I would return the ****ing car.

If you aren't happy with the current workaround, RETURN YOUR ****ING PHONE!

Just returned my new iPhone due to this issue. I'm left-handed and I always held my 3GS with my left hand on the problematic area. The new features just aren't worth the inconvenience of having to change how I hold my phone.

I know some people are saying this isn't a serious problem, but it was happening to me repeatedly and caused me to lose signal entirely.

Ah well, at least I still have my 3GS. :)

Thats not a solution. Its a workaround.

So you admit there's a problem if a 'workaround' is needed?

I'll tell you what, I would've consider it a workaround if Jobs had said "We're working on the issue..."

But he didn't.

Instead, he told people that they were using the device 'incorrectly'.

I wouldn't. But instead of crying on a message board like a schoolgirl, I would return the ****ing car.
Sorry, I didn't get the memo that said it's manly and mature to accept product defects. "Sure, the car only has three wheels, but I'm a man, so I'm not gonna cry over that. Off we go!" vrooom *thud* vrooom *crunch* vrooooom *screech*

What in the world are you talking about? When did I ever tell you to accept the defects? I told you to return the item.

Heres the scenario:

You receive a defective product.

You either:

A. Return it
B. Come to a message board and complain

Does this require rocket science?

Actually, I am doing both. I returned the phone this morning and now relating my experience and listening to the experiences of others. I can suggest to others not to purchase this thing (based on my experience) until Apple FIRST, Admits there is a problem and SECOND Fixes it...

Somehow in your brainwashed mind you equate feeling ripped off about paying $600 for a cellphone that doesn't function with "Crying like a schoolgirl"...

I'm sorry. I'm a loyal Apple user, but not so loyal that I don't feel obligated to call a spade a spade, or in this case, a lemon a lemon....

Now run along and kneel before your 8 1/2 X 11" glossy of Steve Jobs.

I have a genius appt set for this evening. I was looking at photos taken by others and they look great. Mine has some color issue. I posted a new thread showing a picture of a white piece of paper that has a large blue-ish halo in the middle which dominates most of the image.

So as much as I hate to go through returning/re-setting up the phone - I might have to. I'm sincerely not one to nitpick (i.e. small scratches, imperfections, etc. But (attaching the photo here too) - this is significant enough for me.

This has to be one of the worst examples I have ever seen in a forum post.

Software is ALWAYS flawed. From the .0 release to the .9 release software is always a work in progress. Sometimes some deal breakers slip through the cracks and we have to put up with some issues until a patch is released. I bet we see an update for this antenna problem either today or tomorrow at the latest.

I would like to keep the phone if possible, since everything else about it is great. That's why instead of running out to return it immediately, I've made some support calls and genius bar visits and they've assured me the problem will be fixed within my 14 day return period - and i've made it clear if it isn't, my phone is being returned.

Software updates ain´t gonna fix this problem. They will only just hide the problem.

And I´m betting Apple will do just that, HIDE THE PROBLEM with a software update.

And then fix the REAL PROBLEM with iPhone 5 redesigning the antenna.

And this I would call CRIMINAL BEHAVIOUR! :apple:

I hope all these knee jerk reactionists take their phones back for refunds today only to have a software update fix the problem within 24hrs. The impatience of ppl never ceases to amaze me.

Again with the software. What part of "placing your finger in spot X bridges the antennas and kills the signal" don't you understand? How is software going to redesign the phone? I need another USB port on my MBP, where can I get the software update that changes the physical properties of my computer? Can I make it 15" too, the 17" is a bit heavy?

I like how part of their proof that it is a common flaw they show a 15 year old Nokia phone that has the same problem.
I mean why should 4th generation iPhone built today be any better than that?

And what is your basis for calling this a software issue? Most of the evidence I'm reading (and a bit of common sense) seems to point to a hardware / design issue.

You may end up being right, but either way, to have a company so arrogant to claim "it's how you're holding it" is an insult to it's customers.

Apple should fix this problem and then offer current users to swap for a new one for free. If they don't then they should offer free bumpers rather than charge £25.

And you would know this based on what facts? Chaulk another one up for Internet genius/moron queue.

You weren't ripped off, they let you return it.

But, since $600 is so important to you, whats your opportunity cost been for all the time you've spent talking about how you felt ripped off

I have said it once, and I'll say it again. Its been a day and a half, I'll give Apple the benefit of the doubt to come up with a fix. If they don't correct the issue then I will gladly help supply the pitch forks and torches.

If they fix it and you still drop calls while your display shows FULL STRENGTH, then it will be AT&T's fault?
