And yet yesterday, Apple already had the following official response ready:

"Gripping any mobile phone will result in some attenuation of its antenna performance, with certain places being worse than others depending on the placement of the antennas. This is a fact of life for every wireless phone. If you ever experience this on your iPhone 4, avoid gripping it in the lower left corner in a way that covers both sides of the black strip in the metal band, or simply use one of many available cases."

Again, what part of that statement gives you the idea that it's an emerging/previously unknown issue possibly caused by software? The statement makes abundantly clear that they know perfectly well what's causing the issue.

I think both Jobs and Apple thought this was a minor isolated few incidents and basically their statement mirrors what most cellphone user manuals say.

I have both a 16g and a 32 gig and did a similar test. They both have the blue halo when taking a picture of a white piece of paper, but the 32gb is much more distinct. I would be interested in what the genius says about it.

I have a genius appt set for this evening. I was looking at photos taken by others and they look great. Mine has some color issue. I posted a new thread showing a picture of a white piece of paper that has a large blue-ish halo in the middle which dominates most of the image.

So as much as I hate to go through returning/re-setting up the phone - I might have to. I'm sincerely not one to nitpick (i.e. small scratches, imperfections, etc. But (attaching the photo here too) - this is significant enough for me.

I guess it's a good thing I'm Canadian and I get to wait and see how this will pan out. I have a bunch of Apple products but this would have been my first iPhone. I'm really hoping this gets figured out without a massive recall.

I agree with the car analogy. The matter of the fact is whether it's software or not, the iPhone with out a working radio is a iPod touch. Not able being able to use it as a phone is ridiculous. The phone either works or it doesn't and the workaround is impractical.

Apple is trying harder to bring this to big business. I don't think a bunch of high level executives are going to be happy when told from IT the reason they keep dropping out of important calls is because they are holding the phone wrong. It's just not going to fly.

For average consumer to return the phone because it is inherently defective is silly because at the end of the day it doesn't rectify the problem.

Which is funny, because you just joined this site today and have made 27/27 posts complaining about people posting about their defective phones.

GTFO & GFY. :p

Yeah, I got my new phone, and was hoping to actually discuss how awesome it is. Wishful thinking I suppose.

Ehh...that's nothing. What is news is this:

Oppenheimer raised Apple Inc's (AAPL) price target from $320 to $345 after a survey of iPhone 4 customers yielded positive results.

Positive results? Maybe this is affecting was less people than we think...

Ah ah I deal with sell-side analysts all the time. Most of them are clueless and keep upgrading trending stocks towards infinity until they crash. Technology analysts can be especially bad, as a lot of them come from non-engineering or scientific backgrounds and don't even understand the technology. I am sure a lot of these guys are having trouble comprehending what the problem with the iPhone 4 is (it's a % ****ing $900 smartphone that doesn't make phone calls, stupid! :D)

If this issue isn't resolved by the weekend expect AAPL to open down 5-7% on Monday. With every growth and value fund way overweight AAPL, the rush for the exits can be catastrophic, especially as portfolio managers try to protect their profits at the end of quarter or half-year.

You can't touch this
You can't touch this
You can't touch this
You can't touch this
You can't touch this

My, my, my music hits me so hard
Makes me say "Oh my Lord"
Thank you for blessing me
With a mind to rhyme and two hype feet
It feels good, when you know you're down
A super dope homeboy from the Oaktown
And I'm known as such
And this is a beat, uh, you can't touch

I told you homeboy (You can't touch this)
Yeah, that's how we living and you know (You can't touch this)
Look at my eyes, man (You can't touch this)
Yo, let me bust the funky lyrics (You can't touch this)

Fresh new kicks, advance
You gotta like that, now you know you wanna dance
So move, outta your seat
And get a fly girl and catch this beat
While it's rolling, hold on
Pump a little bit and let 'em know it's going on
Like that, like that
Cold on a mission so fall them back
Let 'em know, that you're too much
And this is a beat, uh, you can't touch

Yo, I told you (You can't touch this)
Why you standing there, man? (You can't touch this)
Yo, sound the bell, school is in, sucka (You can't touch this)

Give me a song, or rhythm
Make 'em sweat, that's what I'm giving 'em
Now, they know
You talking about the Hammer you talking about a show
That's hype, and tight
Singers are sweating so pass them a wipe
Or a tape, to learn
What's it gonna take in the 90's to burn
The charts? Legit
Either work hard or you might as well quit

That's word because you know...

You can't touch this
You can't touch this
You can't touch this

Break it down! (Music breaks down) Stop, Hammer time!

Go with the funk, it is said
That if you can't groove to this then you probably are dead
So wave your hands in the air
Bust a few moves, fun your fingers through your hair
This is it, for a winner
Dance to this and you're gonna get thinner
Move, slide your rump
Just for a minute let's all do the bump, bump, bump

Yeah... (You can't touch this)
Look, man (You can't touch this)
You better get hype, boy, because you know (You can't touch this)
Ring the bell, school's back in (You can't touch this)

Break it down!Stop, Hammer time!
You can't touch this )
You can't touch this
You can't touch this
You can't touch this

Break it down! (Nice pants, Hammer) Stop, Hammer time!

Every time you see me
The Hammer's just so hype
I'm dope on the floor and I'm magic on the mic
Now why would I ever stop doing this?
With others making records that just don't hit
I've toured around the world, from London to the Bay
It's "Hammer, go Hammer, MC Hammer, yo Hammer"
And the rest can go and play

You can't touch this
You can't touch this
You can't touch this
You can't touch this
You can't touch this
You can't touch this
You can't touch this
You can't touch this

Probably didn't need to quote the WHOLE song! But you made your point, nonetheless. :)

Yeah, I got my new phone, and was hoping to actually discuss how awesome it is. Wishful thinking I suppose.

Try Mac Daily News... The iPhone could be so screwed up that it wouldn't even power up and the users there would tell you it's the best phone in the world.

They're all a bunch of brainwashed drones like you. Why not "discuss how awesome it is" over there. I'm sure you'll fit right in!!

Is everyone forgetting that Apple already said there is a problem in software that inaccurately shows how the bars react to actual reception? This was covered a few days ago and Apple said they would release a fix.

For a person that is on the internet - you fail.

Originally, Apple said it was a software issue. Now, it's because we're holding the phone wrong which implies it's how the phone is designed. So basically Apple saying it's user error.

I would believe it's a software issue if we were simply losing a few bars (which is the case in some areas) but there's a good portion of us losing signal completely.

Funny how investors.com also has this on their front page:

Early iPhone 4 owners in grip of reception problem

So... just to make sure - if investors.com picks up a news item, it's of concern to investors... right?

Actually, I don't fail. I go to one of the best universities in the country.

FYI, when my phone is on a table, by a window, i get 5 bars 3G. As soon as I pick it up, I lose ALL bars of 3G AND Edge leaving me with no data, and "1" bar of whatever voice service there is.

There's a 3GS next to me and it gets 4-5 bars consistently in the same spot.

I think you would have to be daft to consider that acceptable under anyone's standards. Whether everyone or not has the same defect, I can't really speak for. But I know the Apple Genius I talked to said all the Geniuses in the store were having the same problem and that I should continually check back to see if they have any updates.

This issue will only get bigger and bigger. The publicity surroundingthe iPhone 4.0 is huge. The Gizmodo story, the features, the media hype, huge sales figures, etc. has mad this a very visible product and now the problem is becoming very visible too.

I suspect Apple knew of this, thats why they're selling these bumpers. They never made bumpers before.

Apple is in a lot of doo-doo I think. This antenna problem is not going to be easily fixed.

I too, think Apple will try to hide this with a SW update.

Shame on Apple!!!

I just spoke with an Apple Senior Advisor at tech support and he said their engineers are working on the issue and that he apologizes for the problem and Apple's previous statement. He said to keep my eyes peeled for a solution which he thinks will come soon and that holding it differently or having to buy a case is extremely unacceptable, so a real solution should be coming and they will make sure no customer is stuck with defects.

Lets hope this ends up being true.

anyone else seeing/hearing this?

I'm confused. First you say this:

I agree with the car analogy. The matter of the fact is whether it's software or not, the iPhone with out a working radio is a iPod touch. Not able being able to use it as a phone is ridiculous. The phone either works or it doesn't and the workaround is impractical.

Then go on to say this:

For average consumer to return the phone because it is inherently defective is silly because at the end of the day it doesn't rectify the problem.

Why in the world would you spend $200 or $300 plus monthly service fees for a device that does not work properly?

I agree that returning the phone will not rectify a software, hardware, or network problem, but at least you can get another device in the interim. What is silly is accepting these problems as the new norm.
