And you would know this based on what facts? Chaulk another one up for Internet genius/moron queue.
Why on earth would Apple go on record and tell people that they're holding the phone incorrectly if they didn't know it was a hardware matter? How about "we're investigating right now, but it's likely a software issue. Meanwhile kindly avoid touching that particular spot"...? That's right, they know it's a result of the design, they know they can't change that.

I have a genius appt set for this evening. I was looking at photos taken by others and they look great. Mine has some color issue. I posted a new thread showing a picture of a white piece of paper that has a large blue-ish halo in the middle which dominates most of the image.

So as much as I hate to go through returning/re-setting up the phone - I might have to. I'm sincerely not one to nitpick (i.e. small scratches, imperfections, etc. But (attaching the photo here too) - this is significant enough for me.

Wow, that's bad. Reminds me of the pink blotch issues the HTC HD2 originally had.

Getting a huge signal issue.. I'm left handed, and I've always held every phone I've ever owned.. In my left hand.

On the Mobile FCC Broadband App, in the fringe area I'm at currently I get 0.10 mbps on both upload and download. On latency, I get 1400ms (terrible, but ok).

I hold the phone in my left hand, as I've always done, and I see the speed drop to unmeasurable (0mbps for both) with 24k+ latency.

As for voice calls, if I hold the phone, it drops from full strength to no bars, and without fail drops the call within 50 seconds.

*sigh*

Come on, use your brains! It´s really obvious.

If Apple releases a patch that fixes the issue and signals are no longer lost 'for real' then that wouldn't be covering it up would it. You think Apple is that dense that they would just put a fake bandaid on it and a million iPhone 4 users wouldn't call them out on it. Serioualy man. You use your brain.

You weren't ripped off, they let you return it.

But, since $600 is so important to you, whats your opportunity cost been for all the time you've spent talking about how you felt ripped off

Ahhh, that's none of your business how I spend my money or my time. I'm 52 years old, have 2 college degrees, and run my own business. You can "roll your eyes" at me all you want you little snot nosed jerk, but one thing about being free in America is that one is allowed to think for themselves. And I, unlike the brainwashed zombie that you are, do.

This thread is turning into a pool of insults and abuse.

So, Hitler with some nazis and Jesus are waiting in line for the new iPhone...

I hardly ever agree with Anuba, but yeah. While there doubtless is a software issue as well, some percentage of users are afflicted with a hardware-specific problem. I believe some percentage of users are missing a dielectric coating on the outside of their antennas (including me on all 3 iphone 4's I own/owned).

Arrogant douchebag.

I'm about as big of an Apple supporter as you will find but wow, I have to agree with you. That really shows a scary lack of regard for customer satisfaction and is an admission of something as a major design flaw.

If no one already posted this, look at this to see what a hypocritical statement that is by Jobs.

Just returned my new iPhone due to this issue. I'm left-handed and I always held my 3GS with my left hand on the problematic area. The new features just aren't worth the inconvenience of having to change how I hold my phone.

I know some people are saying this isn't a serious problem, but it was happening to me repeatedly and caused me to lose signal entirely.

Ah well, at least I still have my 3GS. :)

Did you get your phone from Apple or ATT and did you have to pay a restocking fee?

52?

REALLY???

That was before they realized it was a widespread problem. Seriously folks this thing just came out yesterday. As we have seen in numerous posts, Apple senior tech support have acknowledged the problem and are working on a fix.

That's terrible and ridiculous. I seriously hope this issue gets sorted soon. A lot of people say the problem is more hyperbole than reality, but cases like this prove otherwise.

This could be caused by any number of software glitches. Especially considering no manner of insulation including Apples own bumper correct the issue.

Just one example I have off the top of my head. On any phone when you cover the antenna portion with your hand, the phone is supposed to ramp up the antenna power to compensate. What if, in this situation, there is a bug that is preventing that from happening properly. It could also be any number of other software issues.

And yet yesterday, Apple already had the following official response ready:

"Gripping any mobile phone will result in some attenuation of its antenna performance, with certain places being worse than others depending on the placement of the antennas. This is a fact of life for every wireless phone. If you ever experience this on your iPhone 4, avoid gripping it in the lower left corner in a way that covers both sides of the black strip in the metal band, or simply use one of many available cases."

Again, what part of that statement gives you the idea that it's an emerging/previously unknown issue possibly caused by software? The statement makes abundantly clear that they know perfectly well what's causing the issue. They don't say "wait for a fix", they say avoid touching the phone there or use a case. And this time they made cases themselves as a precaution. Yet you still believe they knew nothing about this issue until users alerted them to it...?

I thought the iP4 was designed, so when your hand or anything else creates noise, the phone will search for a different signal, thus saving battery life?

Just to chime in: I have this reception issue as well and drop a lot of calls. I hold it in my natural position, left hand. I am not complaining, I have a case number with Apple and I am awaiting their response to the issue. Only then will I know whether I should return the phone or not. Obviously I really hope NOT. ;) It's a bit frustrating that an issue this significant made it through testing to the finished product.

Is everyone forgetting that Apple already said there is a problem in software that inaccurately shows how the bars react to actual reception? This was covered a few days ago and Apple said they would release a fix.
