just got off my call with apple CS, wait til you hear this..

so i started off with a low level rep, explained i had 4 iphones in front of me, one 32gb 3gs, one 32gb i4, two 160gb i4s.

told him all the i4s when using in hands have no signal, before i could say anything else he stated we know this is a issue, we are working on a software fix for this to be released soon, soon as he was done with his script i hit him with the same question 5 times. "how can a software fix fix this issue i am having when its clearly hardware related" he said well 3gs are now having the issue running ios4 as well (which i already knew..but didnt say anything) i asked him what are you doing for the people who paid good money for this, he said well you can wait for the 4.1OS which will be out soon. i explained i spent a total of $1631.xx yesterday, full price for 2 phones and $200 for one of them + tax came out to my total cost. i said are you going to issue bumpers to people who purchased the phones? he said no because the bumpers dont resolve the issue either (which i knew bc people on here posted the bumper not fixing their issue either), i then mentioned the emails from jobs and how they are all over tech boards and news sites and how bad the PR is for this, i said are you going to be waiving the restocking fee if i take these back? his reply its up to manager.. it just all seemed VERY scripted. he was a cool guy tho, not cocky, he transfered me up to a senior rep who i swear to christ had the same exact replies WORD FOR WORD..

figured id share my experience. im on the fence if i should return them or not. guess ill give it some time and see if this magical software fix comes out.

Thanks for sharing. I'd keep them, after testing a half dozen different ways to correct the issue, I'm convinced its software. The smoking gun for me is that my 3GS was fine on 3.x, but now with iOS 4 its doing the exact same thing as the iPhone 4.

My replacement iP4 arrived today.

Reception issues persists, sorry to say.

Bumper, courtesy of Apple is on the way. A $20 case from Best Buy is solving the issues thus far.

Shout out for the iFrogz LuxeLean iP4 case - very nice .

how did you get the case from apple? they turned me down

Someone had to. :)

So, having not gotten the 4 yet, is there any way to check for this problem (err non-issue) before leaving the store? The Apple Store is almost 2 hours away.

Hi Aggie,
by the way love the sig lol

Thing is if the apple store is very close to a tower , the problem wont show at all.
I did a test today , at home i cant call out or receive calls if i hold it in my hand.
got in my car drove a mile closer to the tower. calls didn't drop , but 5 bars on 3g went to 2 bars edge.
parked 100 feet from tower, no problem.
But i cant sell or move my house to have a working iphone 4. and we are talking i am less than 3 miles from the tower.

so i just got my return okays from at&t, and they are going to reactivate both my 3gs, and cacel both my iphone 4 s

Also, I purchased both the luxelean and the Griffin Reveal.

Reveal offers more protection but feels bulkier and is going back to BestBuy. I dig the luxelean.

BBC News

Made it to BBC news.
That heading made me laugh.

Seeing "Apple advises on holding iPhone" as a top headline in that deadpan, matter-of-fact BBC way, just after visiting the "iHold" site, was simply surreal. It really puts some perspective on how bizarre this matter is.

My Apple Store (Natick) has a 3G Repeater in it - the genius told me that although he has the same issue on his iphone 4, we won't see it in the store because the signal is so strong.

Back from the genius bar -

When I showed the woman the photos (and she took one of her own) she didn't hesitate - went back and grabbed a new one, I signed the repair/exchange sheet and off I went.

Dunno if this new phone has a reception issue like the other one - but the camera and screen or the proper colors

I can also get it from our AT&T store, which is nearby. However, I thought they just hand you a box to go sync at home? Will they let you check it out? If it has the problem or something else is messed up can you just get a new one right there? I'd never even ask these questions for previous models.

My roomie and I both have the issue, as do 3 of my friends. It's totally an Apple issue, and they need to correct this situation. If giving away s-hit loads of Bumpers will make this go away, then they need to step that up. Otherwise, Apple will see a class action suit, a la their scratched iPods a few years back, which they settled out of court. I got a check from that from Apple.

Giving away Bumpers, if it corrects the issue, is the right thing to do. It would go miles for Apple in PR, and cost the company a lot less in the long run...instead of taking the heat in the press, as they are now. How much does a Bumper cost Apple, anyway? .07 maybe? C'mon Steve...come correct here!

Posted these in another thread but thought I would share here too. :D

the at&t store usually asks if you want them to set it up, sometimes state they must set it up. And the at&t stores have no problem with setting up and let you test it.
Also at&t is very good at "taking new items back", my friend went and bought a 3gs last year , and he set it up , the headphone jack was broken, he called and they had one on the counter waiting for him when he brought the first one back.

I know about the 3GS; I just wasn't sure what they did with the 4. I would never return a phone to AT&T and take a chance of getting a refurb from them

LOL NBC Nightly news is talking about iPhone 4 reception issues right now (reported by Mike Taibbi).

He just referenced Mac Rumors and Gizmodo and interviewed Jesus Diaz.

I've done quick scan of newspaper websites here in the UK. The Times, Telegraph, Guardian, Daily Mail and The Sun are all reporting that the new iPhone has reception problems on the front page of their websites. All are reporting that Apple's response it to try holding it in a different way.

Whatever the cause of the problem, be it hardware, software or a faulty batch, this is really starting to turn into a PR nightmare for Apple. I just sympathise with those having problems as I would be annoyed if I had upgraded and had similar issues. I was going to upgrade to the white IP4, but now I'm not so sure.

good part is it is too soon for refurbs to hit the stores yet.

oh, to me the best way to test, is get the Speedtest..net app from the app store. it is free.
set phone down , hit the run. watch the ping time closely and the up and dl speeds.
run it again while holding it in your left hand so the skin is touching the the lower left edge.

if you loose more than 20% transfer rates,, then you will definitely have a big problems the further from a tower you go.
