Why dont you all just get a new iDevice??? I mean you can sell you 3G's towards a new purchase, why dont you all want better tech in a 3GS or iP4

My 3G felt fine for a few days, the it just got slower and slower. It got so bad that I often would miss calls because the screen became so u responsive. The slide move just didn't work.
So I did a clean install, turned off spotlight etc. After 2 weeks is was as bad as ever. It drove me insane. I was thinking of downgrading, but then I got "lucky" and manage to upgrade my contract and got an iPhone 4.
It was with some bitterness as I felt pushed towards an upgrade.
But when I got my 4, it was all forgotten. I think the 4 is such a step up from The 3G, even running 3.1.3.
I get 3G signals in my house, never had hat with the 3G. I do get dropped signal if I try, but so far it has never been an issue in real life

I really do hope they fix the 3G's performance issue so I can hand the 3G over to my wife. At the moment is unusable in my book

For those of you flaming Apple, you have to look a this from Apple's perspective. It's a bit of a Catch-22 for Apple. They either release software that doesn't run very well on the phone and people get pissed or they don't release the software for the phone and people get equally pissed. At least you have the choice to run it if you want to.

That's not the case, though. If they honestly said "Look guys, we've tried it on iPhone 3G and honestly it doesn't run that well but its there if you want to try it" then I'd be more sympathetic and I'd actually respect them for being honest. But they just went around promoting OS 4 as being the best thing out there and didn't mention any issues with the iPhone 3G so we had to find out for ourselves. Poor testing, or hiding issues? Given the whole iPhone 4 fiasco I'd think it was the latter.

You guys are all completely out of touch with software development.

Name one piece of software - ever - that was issued 100% bug free and never had an update or a patch?

You cant.

Of course you can't. But I've never had a software update cripple and make the device unusable. The closest I've had is my Xbox going crazy after a forced update but it worked fine after a restart. Even then when a software update does just as much damage (or more) as good the company is pretty quick to work on it, or to let people know they're working on it. But Apple basically put it to one side here, although perhaps they had their hands full with the iPhone 4 issues.

Its not about it being perfect, but rather Apple actually listening and responding in good time.

There is an issue, created by Apple, and that does not change because a self-professed 'geek' says so. This is a phone that people use mainly to make calls and the other things that any '$0 with a contract' phone does these days. More so, end-users just plug it in, and there it is, iTunes telling you to update to the latest version (sometimes with security fixes, etc. that you need). Regular users are not the kind, nor should they be, that will look at it from a geek point of view: "This is a .0 release, I better skip this one". Unfortunately, the 2 years old 3G phone feels like an 8 years old PC running windows Vista. Sluggish, erratic, crappy, etc. That is frustrating when all you want to do is call somebody and you have to wait for the screen to be responsive so that you can 'slide to unlock'. Then you tap the Phone icon, and you have to wait again. Then tap the Contacts icon, and guess what, wait again. Then scroll, and wait, and tap the contact and wait, and tap phone number, and wait, to finally have a phone call being made. So, I am sorry but the complain is legitimate now, regardless of what you think.

Additionally, as a Developer using 4.1, I hope the issues are addressed soon because 4.1 beta 3 is still as frustrating and slow as seen in the video attached in the original post.

Now about your comments on Apple engineers, poor quality software cannot be excused just because most software companies do such crappy job, and you apparently go to crappy restaurants and don't like most of the people around you. As much as those engineers are people, like you and I, QA is done for a reason, especially for a company that will tell you "is all about the software" and that prides itself in the quality of their software. And all those comments on the Apple engineers are just silly and out of context here. If anything, most people who follows Apple or their products know that their engineers are usually over worked. (Ever heard of Mac OS being delayed because some engineers where shifted from that team to the iPhone OS team? That, no matter how much you and I like Apple and their products, is a very ridiculous situation for a multi-billion dollars company.

a week or so after iOS4 came out i saw someone who didn't look like a geek on the train with a 3GS running iOS4 and all his apps organized in folders

i'm sure all the regular people figured it out as well. most geeks are getting Android phones anyway

So,
Apple release a new version of an operating system for new, more powerful equipment. They make a feature limited version of it for older equipment making very clear that performance will be limited because of less powerful processing power, also stating (clearly) that some features don't have a cat in hells chance of working, so are removed by default. No one is forced to upgrade.

And yet people complain?

Go back to version 3 on your version 3 phones. If you want an iPhone four experience, buy an iPhone four. I have an old G3 iMac here that will run OSX. It runs like a bag of crap, but I'm not complaining it's slow.

No pleasing some people.

I'm running an HTC phone on Android, the model is less than 4 months old, but will never support android 2 - now that is worth getting pi**ed off about.

Why were you pushed towards an upgrade, why not just revert to the previous operating system, the one that came with and was optimised for your phone? Sounds like you simply wanted an excuse to upgrade your hardware to me(!)

They use digital signatures on the current OS updates, making it difficult - but not impossible - to downgrade.

My 3G was so slow, that I finally decided it was time to upgrade to iPhone 4...

Looks like their plan worked. I honestly wasn't planning to, until I realised I couldn't type on my 3G without it missing letters out when typing quickly.

Does this mean my iP4 will get its much needed proximity sensor fix in the update too!!!

As a software/network engineer, we have seen that whenever a new major release is installed in older hardware, you see about a 10-15% decrease in performance. This is due to 'fatter' code to support all of the new features.

The iPhone 3G was initially supported with IOS 2.x. So, 4.x represents 2 major releases for the 3G. No matter what they do, we will still see about a 20-30% decrease in performance (compared to IOS 2.x) even after the release of the upcoming optimization corrections.

That is generally the case, especially with Windows, and most often when new features are added. However, that is normally not the case with OS X. When 10.3 and 10.4 were released, they both had better performance on an older machine than 10.2 did. OS X code tends to downsize and improve performance. However, that trend doesn't quite work through 10.5 and 10.6 as older PPC machines aren't supported by the new OS. However older Intel Macs still see improved performance in 10.6 v. 10.4.

Listen to yourselves. So melodramatic.

If they hadn't released it for the 3G you would have complained. They did and it isn't quite up to snuff, you complain. Damned if they do, damned if they don't.

Your right... people might have complained... but the difference would be they could have complained over the phone too because they could actually answer it before voice mail kicked in

When did they say that performance would degrade by updating to iOS4?

Android 2? Are you stuck on Android 1.6 or something?
Which HTC Android phone do you have that is 4 months old but stuck on 1.6?

LOL ROFL!!!! AT THAT VIDEO :):D:D:D:D:D....... How can Apple ALLOW SUCH POOR QUALITY, LIKE C'MON APPLE.

THAT VIDEO THOUGH IS HILARIOUS!!!!

iOS 4 on a 3G iPhone FTW!!! :D:D:D:D:rolleyes::rolleyes:

I nominate this for worst use of capital sentences, exclamation marks, emoticons, internet slang and overall tone of comment. Perhaps a temporary ban will calm him down???

"LOLZ!!! KNW WAHT I SAYN DAAAAAAAWG!!!! AKNOLEGE MEEEEEEEEE!!!:D:D:D;););)
"

When did they say that performance would degrade by updating to iOS4?

Jobs made clear in his ios4 keynote that although the 3G would support aspects of the OS, it would not support all aspects and performance would not be as fast. He also made clear it was an optional, free, upgrade. Watch the video. In addition to this, it's basic logic. New software optimised for new kit is not going to run as well on old kit. If I had an iPhone 3, I'd have left well alone, same as I won't upgrade my old iBook to OS 10.4. Just because it CAN, doesn't mean you SHOULD.

Android 2? Are you stuck on Android 1.6 or something?
Which HTC Android phone do you have that is 4 months old but stuck on 1.6?

HTC Hero, Rev. 3 Stuck on Android 1.6 and no intention from anyone of providing an updgrade solution. Everything that is meant to be good about Android - including flash - is non-existent on this POS and I can't wait to get shot.

Why does Apple not tell people the problems they are working on. I am patient, but it seems strange that a CEO needs to respond.. Everyone know its a problem so Apple should be upfront and tell us.. I would trust a company a lot more if I could easier find a problem list with some acknowledgement that they are looking into it.. of course other companies would attack them on those points.. but no one likes a bully.. it just seems strange that we have to keep asking Mr Jobs to answer questions.. to me it says a lot about the culture.. and it makes me wonder what happens after Mr Jobs and how much should I invest in Apple.. which is a shame cos I have being using Apple since the IIe and Mac 128k

Because Apple doesn't deliver products or software with problems. If you are having a bad experience it is something YOU are doing wrong. There is nothing for Apple to say because they have DONE NOTHING WRONG. And why didn't you buy the iPhone 4 when it came out? Serves you right for using a 2-generation-old product! Who are you to say anything bad about Apple anyway? I bet you don't even own any black turtleneck sweaters. So go out there and get your iPhone 4 and SHTFU.

OS4.01 is already much more faster on 3G than 4.0. Welcome news anyway.

Your phone was never, ever going to get Flash 10.1. It doesn't meet the minimum requirements for it.

If you desperately need it, install a custom ROM. (I believe the Hero didn't ever run 1.6 either, you are probably on 1.5)

Interesting how you blame HTC for exactly the same thing you praise Apple for.

He did not say that at all. He stated due to performance limitations ceretain features - multitasking, wallpapers, would not be accessible. He never once said the phone would under perform.

Given the whole iPhone 4 fiasco I'd think it was the latter.

Troll! :D
Fiasco? It is selling like free pancakes, it is an incredible products, scoring best reviews around the world. All people i know have one love it, the antenna problem is non existance and everyphone (i've tired like 30 or more) does it more than iphone4.
maybe it is a fiasco in your mind.

That's pure BS!
Show me where they ***CLEARLY*** stated that upgrades to the newest iOS would not be a good idea on an older phone.
GET REAL!

When I upgraded to iOS4 with my 3GS, my battery life TANKED. Hardcore. So I read some apple support discussions and waited for a useful answer, and it finally appeared: Restore your iphone via iTunes (like a brand new restore, deleting everything but back up first).

For me, that worked. Battery life was back to normal, yee ha.

I post this in hopes that this might be a solution to 3G iPhone users, but maybe not due to the slower processor?

I can cope without flash, my point being that android is laughing down it's nose at Apple becuase it "supports flash", when it doesn't across more than 90% of it's devices, and this is NOT made clear to mugs like me. You buy a new phone, you expect it to have new/latest technology.
