This is a little off topic, but has anyone tried using the Pencil on an Air 2 or Mini 4? I know they don't officially support it but I'm curious if they unofficially support it ;)
Nope. Apple Pencil will do nothing on other iPads.

You vaguely mention hipocresy, care to elaborate.

I think it's supposed to be the usual "But, but.. Apple never wanted a stylus!11!!!"-blabla, of course ignoring the fact that back then it was about a stylus being mandatory to operate a screen.

Fast-forward to 2018:

It was important that we develop the UI based upon mouse input (iPad Pro 3 Mouse – $199 in selected Apple retail locations, iPad Pro 3 Keyboard With Apple Trackpad available too for just $299). The reasons are obvious. I think it is equally obvious that you're just not as dexterous as you are with a mouse for certain things.

To further - I think the use of the word "Pencil" is limiting for what it does. It's not a Pencil. They just made it "look" like one. But on a tablet, it can be a pen, pencil, marker, paint brush, crayon, stamp, etc.

Thumbs up and I agree. It probably will just add confusion to those less smart Apple users who bought a tablet with the expectation of using it to carry drinks on around their homes.

It never was though.

Resistive touch screens were in use "back then", and they never mandated a stylus – you could easily use your finger to click things. Rather poor accuracy with a finger of course (i-screens are not that accurate with fingers too, because fingers are fat, in fact they use clever algorithms to guess where you intended to click), but worked well for big buttons (and you can use anything to control it, they detected pressure).

Pre-iPhone smartphones could be operated with finger just as well, for example.

It's a great device and I love mine , though it's painful reading these interview snippets at the hypocrisy of apple having copied Microsoft. Suddenly all the design and Ui issues with using a touch based laptop replacement with a sylus have gone away in the surface clone that is the iPad pro with the keyboard setup.

I'm glad Apple makes good design decisions instead of adding garbage like a mouse or trying to converge two devices not meant for it. Microsoft could stand to learn a few things

You see the resemblance between the surface and iPad pro ? When docked in a keyboard and running a full desktop OS, a mouse is not a dumb decision.

Um, you can absolutely open Apps with the Apple Pencil, and scroll through e.g. Safari with it.

Works very well, the only annoying user journey is that you cannot close the the app, so you have to press the home button. Which is weird when you are using the pencil for navigation.

Personally I wouldn't use the Pencil for anything other than drawing. It's FAR too sensitive, for example, to type with.

I didn't say that, I said that Apple were addressing a stylus as being a requirement (and as you say yourself, those devices that were made for a stylus were better off with one, due to accuracy etc.)

"Jony Ive: Apple Pencil Will Not 'Replace the Finger as a Point of Interface'".

An the mouse pointer cannot be replaced by a finger o stylus either. Bring a true Mac tablet.

What exactly makes the iPad Pro a Surface clone? Technically it can only be the stylus as the first iPads did have keyboard docks. So that stylus/pencil is what is causing your "pain"?

I was at two Apple stores today and they said they're selling iPPs and Pencils as fast as they can get them in.
I agree, At my local store yesterday, tried to buy 128 one for GF (I have 128 also) and they were sold out by 1100 hrs, sales guy said the slate greys are the most popular. Still no keyboards or pencils either.

Stylus is latin for an writing instrument that was used to etch in clay. The word is still used in english to mean an object used in writing, drawing, or engraving. Stylo means pen in French.

The idea that stylus is too rooted in technology is completely false. It's very much the opposite. It's a simple item that works very much like the apple "pencil." They just wanted it to sound different, and he had some stupid spin on it.

Most people don't study archaeology or history and as a result their association with the word stylus would conjure images of PDA's. Apple marketing is some of the best there is, and it's very affective for them. So I wouldn't say it's stupid.

It's absurd the amount of people that misuse what Steve jobs said

It really is.

I'm pretty sure Jobs was referring to regular users using a stylus as the primary input device on a 3.5" phone.

And I'm pretty sure the Apple pence is primarily designed to be used by graphics professionals using graphics apps on 12" tablet.

And lastly, I'm pretty sure those two use cases are completely different.

Didn't Apple at one point say touchscreen navigation on Surface like tablets is unergonomic and people should not be reaching up from the keyboard to touch the screen to navigate? So what makes touchscreen navigation on the iPad Pro ergonomic when it has a keyboard docked like shown above?
I should be able to connect a mouse / trackpad / keyboard with trackpad and that's it.

desktop mouse on tablet GUI → works perfectly
desktop GUI on tablet with touch → Boo!
tablet GUI on desktop OS → Boo!

I don't see the problem. Most mice are Bluetooth, you don't even have to include new hardware, just add a set of generic drivers and some advanced ones maybe for very popular models / create a new protocol yourself Air Print-style.

I hope they're working on it, especially as a lot of things in iOS post iOS 6 became a lot smaller and easier to miss with a thick finger.
Text links (10pt and less) as regular buttons? Oh God, why? (a very widespread issue especially in third party apps, maybe correlated to the dilution of Apple's own HIG?)

Don't "correct" people for calling apps software. That's ridiculous. Apps ARE software. People can use whatever terms they like.

Oh cool!

In that case my Surface Pro has an incredibly huge amount of Apps and the largest App store on the planet.

I personally see the iPad Pro as an enterprise play.

I thought that was Apple's intention to being with. They sure as hell are not selling it that way.
The best they can do is say it's great for surfing the web, watching movies - debatable without a stand, and doing some doodling. Oh and it's got more speakers - this is very important for some reason when the device is only arms length away.

I've never seen such an unprofessional attitude towards a Pro product.

You really missed the point in favor of trying to make a witty sarcastic remark.

Pain? lets be adults here.

Just pointing out a relationship. If you don't see one, you never will, many do. In my opinion my ipad pro has alot of accessories that the surface first came out with, and the way they interact and fold on the "tablet"

I should have said Surface RT to be clear. Which Microsoft dumped cause the users were not interested in such a device.

I agree - and to my defence: I wasn't the one blabbering on about how "painful to read" Ive's comments were. :)

Apple released a keyboard dock with the original iPad (obviously before the Surface RT), third party stylus were available before the Surface RT as well as were keyboard covers by Logitech & Co.. Of course you can insist on them needing to be made by Apple to make them a "Microsoft Copy" but it won't change the fact that these accessories were widely available even before the first Surface came out.

Sorry, I had to work with what you gave me - a really non-smart comment to begin with. Does someone like you complain about the "Samsung S-Pen" or "Microsoft's Surface Pen" misleading people as a "'pen' technically isn't a brush or marker or ... bla. bla. bla."?
