IMO its disingenuous at the very least and could even be seen as condescending. Since the introduction of GUIs devices have had the ability to reorganize/customize UI appearance. Why was this never a "marriage" of HW and SW on the Mac? iPhone? iPad?
Its almost a hint of insecurity to me - a "made up" feature to cover for other absences. Battery life has been mentioned and as a consequence of that, what about sleep tracking? That's a fairly important piece of the equation for me and if it has to charge every night its not possible.
I think you're reading too much in to it. If that's the way he sees it and designs it through that lens then that's what it is. For me, that's a progressive lens - one many technology companies have struggled to ingrain in their cultures.
For me, I do see hardware and software getting more integrated - particularly with the advent of touch screens where we more directly interact with content; the physical presence of the device is significantly reduced in our interactions. It prioritises interaction and experience over an arbitrary (from a user perspective) separation of hardware and software.
Agreed on the sleep stuff. I use that on my fitbit every so often and find very useful.
