Haters and doubters are quick to talk. It's the same as in 2001 with the iPod. Now look at the success it had. Could anyone have predicted that? Not really.

The Apple Watch is not truly innovative, but it ushers in a new era of tech companies trying to fight for market share (look at Samsung, they've tried - and failed - so far). Apple is entering the fray with what is currently the most advanced watch (soon to be) available on the market. Design aside (as it is subjective, and I personally like it), you can't deny this. Yes, it needs an iPhone to work, but the Galaxy Gear needs an S5 too.

Plus, if you invest in the Apple Watch, it shows you're pretty much in the whole Apple ecosystem (which is ultimately what Apple wants).

This product may not have a huge impact in the first generation the way the iPad or iPhone did, but with time, Apple will dominate this market. I'd wait until the second iteration to see what they can do to refine the design and work out other kinks.

I expected the hate on MR towards the iPhone 6 and especially the Apple Watch. Fortunately, we do not represent the general public's opinion or desire to purchase Apple products. If that were true, Apple would have been doomed a long time ago.

so because some people were wrong one time then all future critique must be wrong as well?

as far as second iteration since you mention the iphone and ipad its not like those changed dramatically visually in the first few versions

Still, for all those social environments where it's NOT acceptable to check your phone, you can check your wrist now instead.

FYI

I've been in enough meetings with there-but-absent smartphone zombies to know that you don't need to look in their hands to see what's going on. It's written all over their faces. That blank stare is not going to become more socially acceptable just because there is a smartwatch at the end of it instead of a smartphone.

I have a $6,500 Tag Heuer Monaco

I don't sleep in any watch I have ever owned - they all go into a bowl on my desk and I choose what to wear in the morning - if anything. The Apple WATCH will probably replace them all unless I want to wear a watch for the love of them.

But why would you buy the $6500 Tag Heuer unless it was as a fashion piece? a $10 digital Casio is more accurate at telling the time with a longer lasting battery, hell you could go nuts and get a calculator watch or something if you wanted more function!

The Apple Watch, all design opinions aside, is a tech gadget.

So you're going to potentially replace a fashion jewellery piece with a tech gadget, which you could arguably have gotten in the first place with a cheap Casio and saved yourself $6490.

I'm not being facetious, I'm just genuinely intrigued as to people's choices for buying an Apple Watch when to me it seems it's not stylish or exclusive enough to be a jewellery piece, not rugged/practical enough to be a sports/health watch you'd wear while training and limited in functionality as a purely tech piece. It seems to fall between every sector - jack of all trades, master of none.

I think we know that normally the jumps in tech and design at the start of a new product's life are the biggest ones.

As years roll by, they have designed the hell out of it, and it will come down to little improvements, until you decide it's getting way too old and needs a revamp.

I'd not buy this for this very reason as this is really the public testing phase, v2 will correct all the biggest flaws in this version.

By the time we get to v3 we will probably see "The one we wanted to release all along but the tech was not in place to make it"

That's a long time to wait.....

Wonder if they will make any significant changes before launch?

Hardware wise, I guess it's set in stone, but they can always change the software and UI look

so because some people were wrong one time then all future critique must be wrong as well?

No of course not but people have been wrong about apple for years not just once.

If you went by the predictions of the uninformed apple would have been bankrupt at least 63 times now lol.

Instead they're the most valuable company in the world. Hard to take people who haven't even seen the product in person seriously when they predict gloom and doom.

Provide a link of this existing clone? Oh, you're exaggerating and making things up? Ok.

Ok.

They took the health tracking out of this

http://www.mybasis.com/

And put it it into this form factor

http://www.samsung.com/us/mobile/wearable-tech/SM-R3800GNAXAR

(both are cheaper than the iwatch)

No real innovation. I guess they did make the charging a sleek sexy procedure--that might be the thing different about the iwatch. Except, the Basis tracks your sleep because it has a few days charge on it. So, Apple fell short of an already existing product in functionality. Samsung also can control your TV for you, so Apple making a note of how you can do that during the presentation was kind of lame.

There's no problem with critique...if it was informed and insightful...and wasn't delivered with excessive and groundless confidence.

It's always their best work

What else are they going to say? We mailed it in?

"Despite being a market leader making billions of dollars we read on the Internet people want big phones. So we ditched our elegant beautiful designs and made a big phone with some minor spec bumps. We call it the iPhone 6."

The market is mature and we are past the point of new amazing features. Now it's about functional software and keeping pace. But in this market Apple should make 3 sizes. Why cut yourself off? 3 new form factors - is that so hard?

1. It's water resistant. You're caught in the rain, wash your hands, no problem. Waterproof watches (submerging the whole watch in water) are a very niche market.
2. Apple has not stated any battery life yet, and the only rumor of battery life is 2-3 days. You must be thinking of the Android Wear watches.

My Timex from the 1970s that cost $7 (not adjusted for inflation) winds up, is kinetic so really never needs winding, is fully waterproof, and has been worn continuously since then, still works. It has been worn in the ocean dozens of times over the course of decades.

Waterproof is not a new thing.

^ THIS!

I very much recall similar doubters as the iPhone was launched, and certainly when the iPad came around! It's always the same, there will be a vocal minority cry 'oh it's awful, apple are doomed', when most will look on with interest, whether they end up purchasing or not. Pretty sure that as with all Apple products it will be a success and herald a new age of wearable devices. Maybe it won't have the iPod/Phone/Pad impact but it takes a real fool to say it's going to be a flop.

So so wrong. My Opinion

First off, I love apple. I love their products and love the thinking that goes into them. But the apple watch to me is a huge disappointment. Here is why.

1. It's quite unappealing. honestly feels like the first iPhone, which was jaw-dropping in its day but quite old and outdated for the present moment.

I understand and appreciate the thought that went into design to make it more personalized. but the rounded blob that the actual device is, seems so expected and honestly looks like you compressed a first gen iphone.

With the time and money they spent making it in different metals... they should have just made a device that used the same metal and retina display but not only linked up to different bands allied for the body of the device to be changed out.

2. The UI: looks very outdated and looks like a gag/novelty/gimmicky interface you would find on a gumball machine watch. Apple is known to have more taste than this, and this is surely a huge shortcoming for them.

With as much effort as they put into IOS8 and OSX, where is the design sense for the apple watch????????

Where is the translucency? Where are the beautiful colors? the simpler interface?

When you must require the iPhone to use the watch, why not have the customization controlled on the iPhone instead? Give you a much bigger area to see your design/options to download new ones.

3. The tech: Where is the innovation? everything I see here is nothing remarkable.

I hope that the interface gets an overhaul before release. but hope that we see a new replacement device within a year. the apple watch 2?

I'm guessing by millions he was including all the on-screen customization, such as icon rearrangement. Physically, there 36 if I'm not mistaken.
He’s an idiot. By that same logic my Mac has millions of different versions because I can change the desktop background. Actually you can double that as if I alter the resolution it’s yet another iteration of the same thing.

Not being waterproof and having to plug it in every night makes this thing impractical for everyone except the most devoted Apple fans.

Some of the straps are nice though, so Jony can be happy with that.

It is water "resistant" which means you can do anything except go swimming and diving with it, and it charges wirelessly. There are no plugs.

To judge the UI without using it for a period of time in a real context is kinda silly.

If you want pure tech innovation I suggest you go elsewhere, Apple's innovation is focused more on interaction and experience with the technology the supporting cast.

I swear some of you people are absolutely rediculous. You wouldn't be satisfied if God showed up at your door and said, "Servant, well done."

If I remember right, when both the iPhone and ipad both came out, many of you were ridiculing them much in the same way as you are doing the Apple watch. A year from now, apple will have sold millions of these things and you all will either have already bought one or really changed your tunes about not buying one.

Such a joke! LoL

What many of you are so oblivious to is the fact that this is going to be the best 1.0 version of a smart watch that anyone will attempt. Apple always wins the 1.0 battle. The following devices always get better. You live and learn from the first to only get better as time passes.

Don't review this as a finished product. You can never review tech as finished products because if it were finished, there would be no reason to update it the following year. You review it for what it brings you at that moment. With what it does, does it do it well? Does it do it better than another device? Of course it's not perfect.

And it's not ugly either. It's just not round like many of you were hoping. Get a grip.

but here you are "policing" comments that dont match yours. ive seen comments people claiming to be disappointed and hating the new watch and phone (moreso watch) and vice versa (which you dont seem to have an issue with). i havent seen any doom and gloom posts

and instead of quoting comments from the original ipod release why not mention the 5c or ipod hifi etc?

if you cant take different opinions on a messaging board then thats something for you to look into.

personally i from what ive seen and read i find the watch to be a dud. the phone seems more of the same and its time for ive to do something else

Harsh. Just because you don't understand his perspective I'm not sure that makes him an idiot.

Interesting; I haven't really even looked at the wearables until seeing yesterday's announcement.

So that I knew what the competition looked like I checked out the spec page for the Gear 2 and the Moto 360 and I was not particularly impressed with the stated features of either competitor either.

The Gear 2 screams "Star Trek gadget" for miles and I think the whole point for the Apple Watch is to be more subtle than that; judging from apple.com/watch and the imagery that's presented, this is clearly designed for the affluent user who wouldn't think twice about buying a $300 pair of nice designer leather shoes or a $400 leather purse.

Its a sad, sad day.

Samsung have produced a better looking design than Apple (by a long chalk).

so because some people were wrong one time then all future critique must be wrong as well?

I've seen criticism since forever with Apple products.

iPod: too expensive, ugly, click wheel is clunky, etc...
iPhone: "500 dollars for a phone?!" - Steve Ballmer; expensive, ugly, no 3G, etc...
iPad: haha that looks like a magnified iPod, too expensive, ugly, etc...

It's the same criticism every time. Apple in 2001 is not the same as this current one. They needed the iPod to be a hit to make a huge comeback. Apple in 2014 already has a massive share with iPhones/iPods/iPads. They know this thing will sell. It's status quo. No matter how ugly a product is, slap an Apple logo on it and it will sell like hotcakes.
