Battery battery battery

I have a $6,500 Tag Heuer Monaco - it has a self winding mechanism but if I don't wear it every day then I have to wind it. It has the same dimensions as the Apple WATCH. The Monaco has been in production for longer than I have been alive and I waited 10 years to buy it. Charging/winding is irrelevant.

The crown on my Monaco protrudes as much as the Apple WATCH and has never been knocked and damaged.

I don't sleep in any watch I have ever owned - they all go into a bowl on my desk and I choose what to wear in the morning - if anything. The Apple WATCH will probably replace them all unless I want to wear a watch for the love of them.

the Apple WATCH is going to transform the instant information world. I might even actually follow twitter when I get a nudge from the WATCH rather than having to unlock the phone, open the app, find the tweet and possibly reply. I will get a nudge that my next meeting is starting soon without my iPad or iPhone flashing up a big notification. In the middle of a presentation instead of me forgetting to go into DND mode and getting a notification that a mate has posted on Facebook - I will get a nudge from the WATCH and move on. I will have my iPad hooked up to a projector and be controlling the presentation as I walk around the room with a colleague on the iPhone speakerphone.

And through all of that instead of constantly grabbing my phone out of my pocket and losing focus on the people I am with I will be doing stuff on the WATCH in the background.

It is almost like they have reinvented sleight of hand.

He is a designer not a performer Jim - I would rather he deliver great design and talk like a monkey and in fact fark presenting by any of the exec - they should do the job they are hired to do and if a presentation is a bit rough or cheesy by people who believe in the product that is better than an actor deliver lines more convincingly.

The tag heuer monaco crown is protected by the pistons. You either have projections or pistons on both sides of the crown (unless its a more classical dress item but then its not made for heavy use)! For the intended purpose of the iWatch that crown simply wont last

You will do all that you described if the battery lasts that long!!! You will be panicking if you didn't have time to give it a full charge. Thats what happens with our iphones and tablets and they have larger batteries, just imagine that with a tiny battery of that iWatch!!!!

As is, the Apple watch is just too much of a hassle. it needs to last a week or more before ist feasible. yes some people will buy it and after a few months will stick it in a draw.

I think il keep using my day to day IWC for now!

I was expecting him to say something else like: The Apple Watch is crap. It's helluva thick and looks like something a nerd from the future would wear if he wanted to stay a virgin unto eternity, with battery life so poor, we can't talk about it.

This is Jony Ive here. Did anyone expect humility and a dash of self-deprecation from him? About an Apple product? That they just showed off for the first time? From Apple?

Now I understand you :)

Often on here I see people jump from "it's not for me" to "it's a crap product and if you buy it you're a douche". These forums would be fair nicer places if people stuck with their own experiences and thoughts on how it might work (or not) for them. Few are equipped to make informative and credible wider judgments...as the premature criticisms and predictions of previous failed products (iPod, iPhone and iPad) have shown.

So when you labeled it a 'dud' I made the assumption you were implying the latter. My bad.

as i say in another post i have no doubt this will sell fairly well and much better than any product most companies in this world could dream of but as far as how it looks (like the sport version the most), what it can do and its cost i have my doubts about it with regards to me

You can't seriously compare winding up a watch to something that takes half a second as plugging it in.

----------

I can because they serve the same purpose. People simply do not want the hassle of worrying if the watch will last them the whole day. This very much depends on how much you will use it and it just adds a new layer of worry.

when they can get it working for a week without recharging it il buy one

Millions and millions

Let's see, up to 10 materials, 6 bands, 2 sizes.... (taking out calculator), that's about 120. Not even close to a million.

Jony is not good with numbers.

You can customize the watch display, which might bring the numbers to millions. Obviously, that works with any post-2007 digital product, but hey you can't fail him for trying to sell his own product.

Being able to make a call without having to tether it to a phone would have been a redeeming point - but no, you can't.

Why do so many people want a watch you can independently call/message from? By tethering to your iPhone you aren't using a separate sim which means no extra contract/payment plan and no different phone number. You wouldn't be able to do most of the things you do on an iPhone on an :apple: watch so you'd still end up taking your phone with you.

Apple are quite rightly playing down the call functionality because people just aren't ready to talk into their watches (even if Apple are telling them it's cool) in the same way that 10 years down the line there is still a stigma attached to talking into a bluetooth headset whilst walking down the street. Similarly, the haptic notifications for directions mean you aren't walking whilst constantly staring at your wrist or freaking out passers by when your watch shouts "Turn Left".
This is a fashion accessory - not a phone replacement.

I love the interface of the fitness apps and the HR monitor will be great for the gym because I keep forgetting mine. The animated emojis and heartbeat however make me cry. They are whimsical and gimmicky and so un-Apple - honestly can't imagine Jony passing those through. I mean REALLY bad. Nightmarishly bad.

Another thing I don't get is the square watch-face drama. The Moto 360 looks awesome but round displays are so inefficient at displaying info.

Someone seriously needs to work on kinetic/automatic charging for these things. Probably 5-10 yrs before tech is small enough though....

As usual, I think the secret to this Apple product's success will be in the subtle usability details rather than mindblowing features. But I guess we won't know until it's out with some real world testing.

You moron that mockup would be completely useless due to its form factor. Yes it does require an iPhone to use all the features like messaging, siri, calls and gps but most people carry their iPhones with them in their pocket anyway so it's not that big of a deal. Or would you rather the watch have built in 3g or 4g and gps and give you 5 hour battery life with use?

Do you realize that most people want it to be able to make phone calls (I guess with a less than one micron antenna), be able to type with a full keyboard, show videos in HD and have a battery that lasts 2 days.
All of it for $199, of course.
I guess that most people in this forum have never worked in the technological field.

on to the next product category:

Those are some titties.

I don't really wear a watch, but I think the Apple Watch is just a little bit too expensive to be an iPhone accessory. It should start at $199 and be a standalone device. Plus, I wouldn't be caught dead without my iPhone (even have it with me during sex), so don't know how it would add to my experience.

Apple watch looks great !!
I don't understand the complain people have, look at apple site http://www.apple.com/watch/ and you would appreciate the craftmanship that goes creating this.

Great job Apple.
I totally agree! I think it's gorgeous! I remember a few days ago when there was an artists render (can't remember who) post some pics of what it wld look like, same kind of rectangular design, bands, and everyone was hating on it! Well it's pretty dayum close!! I think it will be a HUGE SUCCESS!! I wish I cld take that to the bank!!!!

This watch is going to be a failure for Apple. A lot of (ahem) "fanboys" will buy this when it first comes out, then sales will plumet. I think Apple seriously misjudged the market on this one. It doesn't have enough new fitness/features not already available on cheaper (and prettier) wearables. It is too dependent on an iPhone (no GPS, seriously??! A great feature ie. would be to find your way to a set location like a cafe or whatever, tranferred from your iPhone/Mac). And its design/look isn't that appealing. I think this product will be a failure for Apple, unless they change it dramatically for the next revision. Switzerland has nothing to fear :)

I guess that's why Tim keeps him in the lab working and not as an onstage presenter. Or when he does present, we can't see him, only hear his voice (reading off cue cards) in the product videos :D

This guy is too damn fake for my tastes.

I know the crowd eats him up and wants to make sweet love to his accent but I find the way he talks to customers repulsive. If I had a salesman talk the way he does to me (slowly and overemphasizing every... single... positive word) I'd tell him to shut the f up and get me someone another sales guy.

Hey newb, welcome to Macrumors. Clearly you haven't been following Apple for very long because you would have known that this is how the guy speaks. He's consistently talked on and off camera, and at various events in a passionate manner about his work and his role at Apple over the years. From the introduction of the first iMac to the iWatch. It's his shtick if you will.

I think all this hate means it will be a success

Remember the original iPhone announcement?

yesterday I took a trip back to 2001 Macrumors' forum and had a laugh at the iPod announcement. Most people saying that Apple was doomed, mostly wishing for an updated Newton.

U have to remember all of the research and development that goes into this!!! I own several watches that cost upwards of 1,000$ and all they do is tell time. Depending on how deep your pockets are, you cld spend $$$$$$ 10's of thousands of $$$$ on JUST a time piece!!!! Look at the ppl that spend upwards of 300$ on a pair of Jordan's.... To wear them for what 6mths to a year, for basketball shoes!!!! ???? Most ppl, myself included, buy/wear a watch as a piece of jewelry.... I still find myself pulling my iPhone outta my pocket to look at the time! So, for a watch/device to have all of these capabilities..... 349$ is CHEAPPPPPPP!!! U also need to remember this whole country is also geared to having everything RIGHT NOW!!! Ppl want their info now, not 5min, not tomar, and Americans/US are in this whole health kick/trend... It's just another excuse to have something to help you exercise! (FitBit) look how much money they have made?! I def can not blame Apple for making this device, and beautifully!!!!! They are no different than the other half dozen or so that have already been in production... So why hate on Apple, you might not buy this first rendition, buy I'll bet you will eventually....., and ull prolly pay for it with Apple pay!!!!!!!
With all this being said, the ONLY thing that concerns me, is battery life expectancy....? What happens when I need a new battery? On a normal time piece, it's not a big deal. Most of my watches are 10+ yrs old
WAY TO GO APPLE & JONY IVE and his development team!!!!!!!!!

also remember, Watch with no charge, add another 120..."left handed" mode (i.e. upside down add another 120...

Jony Ive: Apple Watch and New iPhones Apple's 'Best Work Yet'

It's a bit pointless and I'm yet to be convinced I'd find it useful for myself and like anything Apple it's marked way up.

Just don't see the real point it may be a start of things to come but if it doesn't function without the phone then what stops me from reaching into my pocket and getting all the information from the phone rather than a tiny screen!?

It's a toy to say the least.

3 different cases, 2 sizes and 6 bands - sounds like 36 combinations

That was my reaction. But he's talking about software, too.

Exactly. I remember reading an article when the iPad came out about it's lack of multitasking, and how for less money you might as well just buy a netbook. I couldn't fault the article at the time.

Gotta love how people get into all those very serious discussions on how good/bad the product is and whether it makes sense/works well/is a piece of crap.
All that - about 5-6 months before they can even touch the product at a store, let alone own one.
C'mon, let's see it first and look at it first, then judge. :)
I personally don't wear a watch. But I used to - before I got my first iPhone back in 2007. I had dozens of watches (and still have most of them in a drawer) and wore a different one every day.
I am very curious to see if the :apple:Watch changes my habits once again, or will become an another expensive drawer filler days/weeks/months after it was bought.

So can we all sign a partition to bring back Scott Forestall?

I think its pretty clear that Ive needs all of his time working on hardware design - as I have always said he is the worlds best hardware designer. But as evidenced here & iOS7 he is not the best at software/feature design.

In fact while we are at it Tim Cook is a logistics man. I'm sure the trains run on time now, but the bottom line is: who is the product guy now? Samsung?

Like I said in a previous post a week or so ago, there are no feature that Apple could add to that watch to make me spend more than $250 on a wearable, first generation at that. And I was pretty much right, in my case. At $350, there are no features Apple could add that would make me want this phone, especially if I'm going to buy the iPhone 6. Some of those curved display band mockups looked very nice, and if someday Apple got around to that, with more functionality, it might be fine.

But, now I have to carry around my iPhone, strap on a watch, and keep them both charged at all times. Sounds like more work. When the watch is an autonomous object on my wrist, I may revisit it, but if I NEED the iPhone to make it work, why not just stick with the iPhone. It will save me $350...
