$65 million "comes to nothing"? I'm afraid we'll never agree on this.
For apple as raised for charity: yes. Not saying this will be welcomed by th people recieving it .

And, well, it is a profit making machine with a quite paltry amount to charity. That's the very point of publicly-traded companies. I'm not saying it's right (or wrong) but that's what it is. If you're outraged, then be outraged at the entire system of Western economics. Apple isn't doing anything out-of-line with the dictates of that system. (BTW, we also have not-for-profit companies. If Apple were one of those then, yes, it would be incredibly outrageous if they spent such a tiny amount on funding charitable activities.)

You should really be directing your outrage to Apple shareholders, both current and potential future ones, and their representatives (Apple's board of directors). If you can convince them that Apple should devote more of their profits to charity then it might actually happen. The company, and its profits, actually belong to them.

I agree but not outraged, just bafled that some people seem to think apple actually cares .

----------

Gasp! that's just terrible. The bastard company better stop it right now then.

edit: actually your mindset is annoying. I bet no other company has raised so much through Product (Red). But that is beside the point. What you are suggesting is that because Apple has made highly desirable products and thus made a lot of money, other people that had no hand in working out how to generate that wealth should have a right to decide how Apple distributes it.

Like the barnyard animals in the story of the little red hen, or that book by George Orwell that obviously isn't studied in schools anymore. Or, heck, the story of the 20th century.

Oh please might I sggest YOU read this book again or read what I said again the 2 dont even come close to each other .

Worth $40K+?

Maybe for the profligate. I'd say it's worth $1999.

Sure, what about the Mango sellers?

Recently here they sold the 'first tray' of the season for around $30k, that's $1250 each for something that sells in the shops for about $2.50 each.

What is really ridiculous is to design this "perfect" round-thing, sell it as a genial design.... and latter have it rounded with external units for hard drives, optical drives, audio interfaces, or extension cables. All of then internal with a clever box like actual Macpro

Yes, extension cables to be able to insert a USB stick.
Think a little, please.

And talking about iMac and Mac mini, my opinion is the same. Is equally stupid not to have a frontal or, at least, lateral USB port, or, for a size reduction of 1 cm, be forced to 2,5" HD (Mac mini) or to prevent the possibility of user change of the internal HD (new iMac)

As a matter of fact, all future apple desktop line is going to be a complete showroom of stupid design with really perfect engineering

Dunno about you, but most people will attach a monitor or two to the MacPro. Those monitors tend to have convenient lateral USB ports within handy reach, without any need for rotating the CPU, or buying additional USB extension leads.

Maybe that's a factor in the design decision to put the ports on the back of the thing? Ditto for the Mac Mini. Gotta agree with you on the iMac though - USB port is in an awkward location.

Why only one of a kind :( Make loads of Product (RED) Mac Pros and you will make loads more Johnny!!! Please!!! I beg of you!

Let's hope that Coca-Cola are not bidding.

They'll just go and ruin that design.

Most people who will have the need for a computer like this, I imagine the color is the least of their concerns.

Why not? It's not as if people desiring a completely nondescript matte black rackmount are going to buy from Apple.

The idea that Mac Pros will only be bought by speed freaks that want the absolute fastest possible machine to render movies on is ridiculous.

But where is the champagne gold ?

They should do like Audi and charge extra for "premium paints" when you buy BTO.

I want a gold one with chrome details.

This thing is going to get thousands of dollars for a charity, yet people on macrumors will still b!+ch because they're stuck with their old cheese grater design. Some of you are miserable.

We are not miserable, we just don't swallow all the carp Apple shoves down our throats.

$1000's of raised when the drugs costs $100,000's. Hell i'm on £200,000 worth of drugs a year. Thats without the latest advance. Can rack that up to £500,000 if they get full approval.

This isn't even a drop in the ocean.

Looks amazing. They should ditch the Mac mini and instead make a cheaper version of the Mac Pro in a range of colours like this. It would be a big seller.

Damn that's pretty. Kinda unfair they don't just let you pick the color you want, since it's a friggin $3000 computer that's almost custom made.

They will have after the first upgrade.

The upgraded one next year will have much better specs but still be black and called the MacPro S.

Then they'll release various coloured ones with the same lesser specs as this year and call it the MacPro C.

Edit: hadn't seen GrayCrow's post

Well the point of the MacMini is that it is... Mini... these are a lot bigger really, and there is a point to the shape for the single fan / heat sink etc.

they could do a Maxi version - with simple cards and storage, but even if they did it wouldn't be for a while

Yet another Jony Ive freakshow product. It's pretty obvious that he doesn't have to use the products he designs in the same way that his customers have to.

Hah. I've said that about every kitchen sink, vacuum cleaner, vegetable peeler, box of facial tissues, etc. that I ever purchased.

(why don't they make kitchen sink designers clean a prototype before they mass produce the thing?)

But I wouldn't call any of Ive's designs a freakshow product. They're flat out gorgeous. Now they're round out gorgeous too.

At the end of the day - perhaps the black color is deliberate.

Would you rather own:

1) A PC which works and looks ugly
2) A PC which looks wonderful and performs like frozen mud?

Fewer color/external/superficial designs options lowers Apple's overall cost of production. It's already a pricey (as some will critique) enough machine.

But they could do a BTO color option, and since many of the systems are practically BTO anyway, it wouldn't add that much time to the order...

----------

Ohhhh. Cobalt blue Mac Pro.... With a PCIe slot and a second PCIe SSD. Ohhh.

Steady there big fella... Only talking color here...

----------

A darker shade of blue would be awesome. :)

Or a turquoise blue... I can actually see people with access to a place that can anodize, doing it... Custom colors, in the corporate colors... Well, for those that don't blow... Depending on how thick the metal is, I could see people also laser etching the sleeve. Why? It'll be easier to do since it can be put on a turntable.

Has possibilities... Would that void the warranty?

Not trying to diss the design of Mr. Ive, but all he really did was take the current Mac Pro design and make it red. It's not really all that remarkable.
(It still looks nice tho, and I'm glad he's doing this for charity :) )

Come on now, he worked hard on this he. He had to make his staff run out to home depot, and get a bunch of free color swaths. They whined and complained about it, but he made them do it anyway. And then he had to randomly with (with his eyes covered) point to the chosen shade. Then he had a staffer run the case off to a local paint shop for the Earl Scheib $29.95 paint job.

It was hard work. So then he took a nap...

$3999 for the aluminum Mac. So my calculation is that Jony Ive' time is worth (36000 - 30)/5 minutes = $7194/minute = $431640/hr.

Why would it matter whether or not anyone used the exact phrase "design genius" in any previous post? That's a pointless digression, not an argument.

Many fans are trying to compensate for the loss of the turtlenecked one by elevating Sir Jony to the head of Olympus. At least they were before IOS 7 shipped.

MR thought that "Jony Ive Designs One-of-a-Kind Red Mac Pro for Product (RED) Charity Auction" would get more clicks than "Apple paints a Mac Pro red for a charity auction". What does "original design" have to do with changing the color treatment on the metal?

It doesn't take design genius to paint a "Product (red)" item red. If the item is anodized rather than painted, it doesn't take a design genius to anodize it red.

All you do is bitch moan whine complain. Grow up. Stop being a drama queen.
