Who here referred to this as "design genius"? It's a news item about a red Mac Pro being auctioned off for charity. One would assume Ive was involved in the design of the original Mac Pro and this is just a custom version of that.

Why would it matter whether or not anyone used the exact phrase "design genius" in any previous post? That's a pointless digression, not an argument.

Many fans are trying to compensate for the loss of the turtlenecked one by elevating Sir Jony to the head of Olympus. At least they were before IOS 7 shipped.

MR thought that "Jony Ive Designs One-of-a-Kind Red Mac Pro for Product (RED) Charity Auction" would get more clicks than "Apple paints a Mac Pro red for a charity auction". What does "original design" have to do with changing the color treatment on the metal?

It doesn't take design genius to paint a "Product (red)" item red. If the item is anodized rather than painted, it doesn't take a design genius to anodize it red.

As the well-known fictitious t.v. show character House would say, you're a m****. The phrase "designed" is editorialized.

The WORD "designed" is what the author chose to use in the article's title, by which the majority of post here would agree is a stretch. Had the author used the word "created" it would have been more reflective of the article's content.

And to quote Dr Cox: slap yourself in the face very hard, then leave.

Um, you don't think he was involved in designing the Mac Pro?

I think he spent the majority of his time designing iOS. He's responsible for human interface, and the Pro is not very human interface like. And frankly, most of his recent designs have been received controversially. Feels like Steve Jobs might have edited him in the past, and now he's not being edited. He's apologetically Ive.

Raised 65 million in 7 years by a company that has made since 2006 about a 100 billion in profits?

Gasp! that's just terrible. The bastard company better stop it right now then.

edit: actually your mindset is annoying. I bet no other company has raised so much through Product (Red). But that is beside the point. What you are suggesting is that because Apple has made highly desirable products and thus made a lot of money, other people that had no hand in working out how to generate that wealth should have a right to decide how Apple distributes it.

Like the barnyard animals in the story of the little red hen, or that book by George Orwell that obviously isn't studied in schools anymore. Or, heck, the story of the 20th century.

But he didn't give up his hardware responsibilities.

Did you say the same thing when Steve Jobs announced these?

Wait...it took two people to re-design something that was black into something that was black?

The summary is a bit sensationalist.

Damn that's pretty. Kinda unfair they don't just let you pick the color you want, since it's a friggin $3000 computer that's almost custom made.

??

Most people who will have the need for a computer like this, I imagine the color is the least of their concerns.

Teenage spec jockeys, on the other hand...

Ive's forte is hardware design.

So keep him away from software.

iOS 7 sucks.
iOS 7 is awesome :) I think religion sucks, but most people think it is awesome. So weird that people have different views. I'm always happy to see people say they hate iOS 7 though, because it ain't going away, but then, neither is religion. Guess you can't always get what you want. ;)

Always thought the new MacPro should have been silver, clear coat... form follows function... no reason really to paint it black. But the red looks nice and I am sure the black in person is stunning. Painting it just makes me think consumer... just my opinion on something that isn't terribly important.

If they really want to help out Product (RED), why don't they just mass-produce this red version? I'm certain it will sell like crazy.

Exactly, none of this "RED PRODUCT" stuff is about charity. It's about making Apple look good.

If they wanted to do something for charity, sell them at $100 above normal price and make $100 donation for everyone sold. Hell even match that buy donating $100 themselves for everyone sold.

I don't think it's painted.

Over the years we’ve gone through so many rumors, expectations, disappointments, hopes and dreams, that the Mac Pro by now seems more like a fictional thing, existing in its own fantasy world. Just release it already.

This thing is going to get thousands of dollars for a charity, yet people on macrumors will still b!+ch because they're stuck with their old cheese grater design. Some of you are miserable.
