I guess there's no end to negative posters, even for generally innocuous and slightly upbeat news stories.

This will be looked back upon as the first step leading towards his resignation or retirement from Apple. I'm not saying it will be soon, but this is Apple being smart. They start showing these guys alongside Ive in videos. Or on stage, or both. Then they start showing Ive less. We begin to love these guys like we love Ive and how we're really starting to like Federighi. I mean who doesn't love Craig? He'd still be involved in important design decisions, but less in the public spotlight. He might take on a limited role at Apple at some point like Mansfield. Then eventually he will go. He might stay around in an advisor role. He will definitely make sure that Apple University is fully prepared for the future and making sure his successors understand what it takes. It might be three years, it might be eight or ten. But he will leave, and Apple will continue on. His legacy will include how well he prepares Apple for his departure and I think he knows that.

Hmm. This gives him a title up there alongside more widely recognised titles such as Chief Operating Officer, Chief Information Officer, etc

I wonder if this is part of positioning him for the CEO role one. Succession planning, if you like.

It was always said (I believe even by Steve himself) that Jony is the man with whom Jobs shared had the most synergy.

So they're going to split UI and hardware design again? Not sure if I like the sound of that.

Why? When Ive took over iOS design after they tanked Forstall, that's when everything went to ****.

I actually enjoy the look of iOS 7/8 over 6 and proceeding iOS', but the functionality of iOS now is just complete garbage. Had an AppleCare rep tell me the other day, when my phone has been freezing continually (6 Plus), that doing a DFU restore to factory settings and NOT restoring from a "corrupted" backup was normal. That's freaking ludicrous.

Anyway, congrats to Ive. I hope these changes benefit us all in the long run, but I doubt it'll make any difference.

I guess this means that Apple isn't happy with the direction iOS 7 and Yosemite went.

This allows Apple to shuffle the cards around, while putting out a positive spun press release, but I doubt Ives will be around in 5 years.

It’s not the same as before. When Forstall left he was leading the iOS division, including it’s design. Now UI design for OS X, iOS and Watch OS is led by one person. I don’t see the new separation as a problem. UI design has almost nothing to do with industrial design, both are separate crafts. It was futile to believe that Ive would be good at both without significant input from others.

I guess this means that Apple isn't happy with the direction iOS 7 and Yosemite went.

Not at all. Alan Dye was involved in both the redesign of iOS 7 and Yosemite, as well as the new WatchKit. His promotion means that he will bear more responsibility for the UI design as a whole, without hiding behind Ive.

The thing is, it's not upbeat. Ives is a freakin Knight. He didn't need to be Sir CDO Ives. That's just being hubris. But what this shuffling does is it shuffles the deck, so that when Ives steps down he has a replacement ready to go.

I wouldn't be surprised if, when Ives resigns, there's no CDO but rather 2 separate positions to take his place.

Cook referred to this as a "promotion". Does that mean Chief Design Officer is a step above Senior Vice President?

So basically he's now got Steve Jobs' job.

Jobs didn't handle the operational or managerial functions of the company. He handled overall product vision, aesthetics, etc. Tim Cook handled all the unsexy stuff--and he was the best person in the world to do it.

They couldn't just ram Ive into this new role following Jobs' passing--though he was likely already doing much of it. The company had to be left in the hands of a single, well-known and capable manager. Now that Cook has kept it together and profits have continued to soar, it's ok to start showing the big picture.

The titles may be different, but at this point, Ive is doing what Jobs used to do (and likely did even when Jobs was there) and Cook is doing what he always did behind the scenes. It'll be interesting to see if this means that Ive takes a more public role at keynotes. Training for that part of the role could have been done and might make sense.

"Jony's design responsibilities have expanded from hardware and, more recently, software UI to the look and feel of Apple retail stores..."

Doesn't look good for Angela Ahrendts.

TL;DR one day Ive will leave/retire/stop working. You should be an analyst. ;)

pretty sure this is a start of an retirement strategy. he's tired, he wants to spend more time with family.

I really think it's this. So when he eventually leaves, they can say that he hasn't been involved in day to day design work in years. Time to pass the torch.

Or maybe he has a keen interest in focusing on automotive design. #

This seems like a BS title to me; it's not like he has been "promoted".

Huh?

I am happy to announce that Jony Ive is being promoted to the newly created position of Chief Design Officer at Apple

Ive says he's still in charge of both. So I'm assuming these new VPs report to him.

Ive is fat.
That explains the iMac anorexia and all the glueing and soldering.

Can anyone make out from these awful resolution images what watches they're wearing?

Where is the Apple Campus 2 drone flyover guy when you need him?

Except the players haven't changed. In fact the guy in charge of UI design has been promoted to VP of Human Interface. If Cook isn't happy with iOS 7/8 and Yosemite this sure is an odd way of showing it.

I wouldn't rule out the possibility that Jony is going to to get very hands-on involved with the Apple Car, which they can't publicly talk about.

Um, I somehow doubt being involved in store design includes managing 40K retail employees. I think Ahrendts job is safe.

I'm thinking Apple has big things planned and doesn't need him worrying about managerial roles.

All the men responsible for Apple's Form Over Function design language, how nice. They should all re-think their obsession with thinness I think.

Actually what is funny about these photos is you have two British men who are fat next to an American who is skinny, and the stereotype states Americans are fat!! How times have changed haha.
