Awaiting moronic, stale, done-to-death "jokes" about Mr Ive... they will come because idiots can't help themselves.

I'd like to have one of those Apple-logo hardhats. I want to believe those were custom made for the construction site (or even just the photo ops,) and not merely a white hat with a sticker on it.

It doesn't look like a sticker. I can't wait for the campus to be finished. First place I'm going is eBay to look for one of those hats!

Can anyone make out from these awful resolution images what watches they're wearing?

I'm hazarding a guess at Cook wearing a SS with blue leather loop, and Ive the Edition with classic buckle.

I think you're right on both. But that must be the Yellow Gold Edition with Midnight Blue Classic Buckle.

People seem to forget it was just a few years ago Jony was sitting in a room designing just a couple of computers and an iPod.

Look how far Apple has come now. They are in your ear. On your table. In the living room. Working will all kinds of new stuff with surprises yet to come.

It just makes sense to have him in this position.

If anything this is a sign of Apple coming out with a lot of new stuff.

Jony Ive is starting to look older than his age.

This is another step in a retirement strategy, at least from a PR perspective. The first was promoting Alan Dye and Richard Howarth in press recently around the Apple Watch launch - give them more exposure as the people driving UI and ID.

TL;DR one day Ive will leave/retire/stop working. You should be an analyst. ;)

Well they made the announcement on a holiday and used a UK news source and Stephen Fry to do the write up. Ives probably picked him on purpose. Rumors have been around that he wants to spend more time in England with his family. He is set for life. He doesn't have anything left to prove design-wise. Apple went from two people over software design and hardware design to one with Ive and now they're breaking it up again but they'll be reporting to him. He clearly wants a reduced role. So yeah, Apple slowly transitions things out. But mark my words, this is the start of the end. Only wildcard is his loyalty to Steve's company. Personally I think he is slowly becoming disillusioned with where Apple is headed or his role in the company. I get that same sense from other users who have been around this site for a long time. Apple just isn't quite the same as it used to be. It's extremely difficult to pin it down precisely, but things are off. Hopefully just a bump in the road. They're still making great devices but a bit of the magic and passion is missing. Idk.

Chief Design Officer sounds like a bigger role then just plain SVP of design. Apple is obviously onto bigger and better things and probably just want to make it sound like a more broader role so he can do what he wants with anything. Obviously the other two guys are getting nice promotions which they probably deserve considering they were around for a lot of what Apple has brought to the table over the years.

I'm hazarding a guess that no one gives a ****, and besides - it's beyond irrelevant.

Now he can focus on such beautiful user experience examples like Apple TV, the Apple Developer portal, the bright white background on the alarm app that's like looking at a flashlight in the middle of the night, the nagging bugs and meaningless error messages that any Apple Developer has come to expect from Xcode.

Oh wait, he was already in charge of that. Well, how awesome for him....

He does design work. He doesn't write code.

Blooming Nora, get a hold of yourself - it's A HELMET. Buy one from a supplier and silk screen the logo on... et, voila!

....what this shuffling does is it shuffles the deck, so that when Ives steps down he has a replacement ready to go.

I wouldn't be surprised if, when Ives resigns, there's no CDO but rather 2 separate positions to take his place.

That has to be in the back of Tim's mind. Right now Jony is just too irreplaceable for the continued success of Apple, as far as their gorgeous and unique designs is concerned anyway. And that's not a good place to be, for any company.

As good as he is, it's worrisome Jony has that much power at Apple. Maybe he was getting bored with the tedious mundane day-to-day things and told Tim he wanted more in order to remain excited and stimulated in his role at Apple.

Either way, for Jony to be too irreplaceable is not a good thing for Apple; Tim just cannot afford to lose him.

according the steve jobs biography, jony's power was setup that way.

"He has more operational power than anyone else at Apple except me. There’s no one who can tell him what to do, or to butt out. That’s the way I set it up."

anyone else tired these idiotic negative nancys that post in every article? you're not funny.

Less staff management time

Frees Johny from most staff supervision issues, more time to create and less paperwork. Good move.

These comments are just plain rude :(

Or make "him" thinner?

Ive is fat.
That explains the iMac anorexia and all the glueing and soldering.

All the men responsible for Apple's Form Over Function design language, how nice. They should all re-think their obsession with thinness I think.

Actually what is funny about these photos is you have two British men who are fat next to an American who is skinny, and the stereotype states Americans are fat!! How times have changed haha.
