Well they made the announcement on a holiday and used a UK news source and Stephen Fry to do the write up. Ives probably picked him on purpose. Rumors have been around that he wants to spend more time in England with his family. He is set for life. He doesn't have anything left to prove design-wise. Apple went from two people over software design and hardware design to one with Ive and now they're breaking it up again but they'll be reporting to him. He clearly wants a reduced role. So yeah, Apple slowly transitions things out. But mark my words, this is the start of the end. Only wildcard is his loyalty to Steve's company. Personally I think he is slowly becoming disillusioned with where Apple is headed or his role in the company. I get that same sense from other users who have been around this site for a long time. Apple just isn't quite the same as it used to be. It's extremely difficult to pin it down precisely, but things are off. Hopefully just a bump in the road. They're still making great devices but a bit of the magic and passion is missing. Idk.

Good insights, you may well be right!

Do you guys really need a reminder ?

...the stereotype states Americans are fat!
No, the reality states that more than 60% of adult Americans are fat. Care to see how fat? Hop on Netflix. They've got a documentary called Rocket Men that's about the early years of the space program. Check out the size of the people! Everyone from the astronauts to the spectators watching the blast offs is so much skinnier than the average American today that it's shocking.

Except Ive knocked down those rumors that he wanted to move back to the UK in that New Yorker profile. In 2012 he bought a $17M house in San Francisco which is still being renovated. He and his wife also became US citizens. I doubt he'd be doing any of that if he wanted to move back to the UK.

As far as the newly promoted VPs, both of them currently work for Ive and will continue to work for him. One would assume he'll still have the final say but won't have to be involved in day to day management stuff. HI and ID were never one; in fact for a period of time there were two HI teams -- the old team that previously reported to Forstall/Federighi and a new team that Ive was creating. Now they've been merged into one team under Alan Dye.

What I mean is he is already at the top of the food chain at Apple and I would argue is even more valuable than Tim Cook. I doubt this "promotion" means that his duties and responsibilities are any different than they were before.

I guess the question is what does "promotion" mean? A bigger paycheck and more stock options?

He is getting a C title. Like Chief Executive Officer and Chief Financial Officer, he is getting the title that reflects his actual position which is presumably number two in at Apple.

I think basically Apple is so large that JI is now going to become basically a CEO of design. He won't be responsible for any administrative work but instead will solely delegate and designate work for others to do.

Had an AppleCare rep tell me the other day, when my phone has been freezing continually (6 Plus), that doing a DFU restore to factory settings and NOT restoring from a "corrupted" backup was normal. That's freaking ludicrous.

That's what you're supposed to do to resolve a software issue, even before iOS 7... How is that ludicrous?

Surely, I'm not the only one that this power change means that Ive would take the same role on user experience that Steve Jobs had. Is this the next step to prepare him for CEO within the next couple of decades?

Can anyone make out from these awful resolution images what watches they're wearing?

I'm hazarding a guess at Cook wearing a SS with blue leather loop, and Ive the Edition with classic buckle.

Ive wears the yellow gold edition 42mm with black sport band.

Did Richard just punch Jony in the arm?

...and did Jony just punch Richard in the nuts?

Cook referred to this as a "promotion". Does that mean Chief Design Officer is a step above Senior Vice President?

It is, its part of the C suite, like CEO, CTO, COO, CFO. Your almost on same footing as Cook when you reach that level. The promotion is to reflect his importance to Apple (and the importance of design to Apple). In any other companies, it would seem to be a vanity title, but not at Apple.

Apple is 50 time larger than a decade ago, a bit of a reorganization makes sense.

Any idea why Jeff Williams isn't COO? Does that mean Tim Cook still handling some of those duties?

Hopefully design will improve with these separated roles.

sorry, but thats not how it works with moves like these.

it is more likely that Ives let apple's board know that he wanted to (at least ) semi-retire or maybe even retire totally, and in order to prevent the inevitable negative impact on the stock, a way for him to appear to retain a position, and, as well, to reward him for his years of service, a title like this is made.

oh, and how will it work managerially? a person with this kind of title, even like Jobs did towards the last few years of his life, tend to increasingly hesitate to say anything other than words of encouragement. and rarely will a person with this kind of organizational "role" have the spirit or drive to kill a design or a project that really needs to be killed. they find that they need to trust the front line managers in charge since project success is in the day to day followup, and a natural hesitancy to intervene in these front line manager's decisions is a result.

also typical about organizational moves like this is that the two new guys probably don't have any world-class ability to mix management and design.
in the reporter interview with ive (quoted in the story), ive subtly disses these two with the ultimate put-down: they are good at management of every day tasks, in fact, they are super great at that, he lets us know.

share price is maintained.
no embarrassment to either company or ive.
everyone a happy happy team.

meanwhile, ive can go off with marc newson his new best bud.

I wonder if this means Apple will now have to start reporting his salary and stock options? So far he's the only executive who doesn't report stock grants and his salary has never been reported in SEC filings.

Gruber is another one who thinks this signals a move to England (though he doesn't think it's s ceremonial position).

http://daringfireball.net/linked/2015/05/25/ive

I don't get why people think this. In 2011 Ive sold the house he had in England. In 2012 he bought a $17M house in San Francisco. He and his wife are now U.S. citizens. Neither of those things indicate a desire to move back to England IMO. And I highly doubt Apple would create a C-level position for him and call it a promotion if he was easing into retirement. They never did that for Bob Mansfield.

Not ludicrous. It's the way it's always been with any software issue ever.

Passing hardware tests? It's software. Don't want to dig through every setting and application to figure out what software is causing it? Erase it to factory settings.

That's computers bruh.

pretty sure this is a start of an retirement strategy. he's tired, he wants to spend more time with family.

No. More scary is looks to be a "try out" to sit in the CEO chair eventually. They are basically expanding his roles to have him interact with more parts of the company and managing larger groups of folks.

... hardware designers
.... software + hardware designers
.... software + hardware + physical plant builder designers (stores )

there are more limited scale design projects so he still has a relatively small team working with to keep design activity up, but he is sitting on top of larger and larger components of the company.

Cook ran the Mac products before ran operations for whole company before got the CEO seat.

He does have buckets of money so may retire. However, when Bob Mansfield went on the retirement trend and his titles got smaller over time.on the retirement track.... not bigger. Being a 'C' level officer in a company typically means more visibility at corporate governance meetings and activities ... not less.

Perhaps it is a gimmick to keep him in more narrowly focused design projects. Gets out of Apple products for end users and does the HQ and chairs and desks. Apple has done much to make him the ghost of Jobs as far as being the deity that the cult is suppose to view as walking on water. Kind of hard to retire the Pope without dying ( along normal traditions ).
