the silicon valley image of human future life is a sad one indeed. can't drive, or can't live with the risk of being surrounded by fellow maniacs, get the train already (with your own panic compartment).
This is a good point. To use the analogy of an electric scooter, it is very exhilarating compared to driving because of the added stimuli, and I think this is an important health benefit. So just as society would be far, far safer and live longer if we all rode bikes and scooters, despite the higher death and injury rates compared to driving, I suspect that society would also be better off if people continued to drive themselves.
On the other hand, taking a train or ferry, and to a less extent a bus, also has huge health benefits from lowered stress, more sleep and more productivity, plus it’s super safe.
That’s what I gathered as well.
You can see that in the past 4-5 years no great new leaps have taken place in design or product launches.
From what I’ve read about his involvement was with the campus it seemed like a nightmare for someone with OCD when it came to design and design issues. I mean down to light fixtures, outlets, door hinges etc.
I think he just needed to turn Apple off or at least be able to decide when he wanted to do something with them.
As the saying goes, he’s done his bit for King and Country.

I've been "working from home" for the last four years, too.
I can safely say I have precious little influence on my previous employer's products.
without a steering wheel? hahahaha! This guy never had anything good to provide us. He hid behind Steve's intelligence and only looked like he was smart because of him. Just like the rest. No more sassy looking junk to expect from him. Maybe we'll get a real person in there with some true innovation.

This is the kind of innovative thought I miss from Apple. Very much looking forward to following Jony's new venture and seeing his unfiltered, unhampered creations.
Smaller ones charge with lightning and USB 2.0, larger ones charge with USB-C, inexplicably.
Of course self driving cars shouldn't have steering wheels (but they should also be much better at self driving).
What's the point of a "self driving" car where you have to hover with your hands over the steering wheel in case anything goes wrong (because it's not a very good driver).
I truly believe the old Apple is gone. There's no visionary pushing it forward and almost everything is reactionary now.
This is exactly where we are headed despite the fuddy duddies screaming "but mah control" here.

Been saying this for years. Our (great-)grandchildren will be stunned to find out people were actually in control of vehicles and how mad and dangerous that was - sick times.
Good Lord. Why would that extremely overrated “designer" even be allowed to design a car? Would the steering wheel require an adapter? Would it also overheat due to no room for proper ventilation? How many recalls would take place affecting a "very small number of users"?

Are you sure, removing human input in the car steerings is enough? Maybe we should restrict the freedom of humans in general. If we were not allowed to go out anymore, we could avoid dangerous interactions (think of gun shootings in schoos) or the spread of diseases. With Facetime, Facebook, Instagram, etc, you can accomplish around 85% of social interactions and get your likes.
I also believe in general we shouldn't allowed of free thinking and accept any responsibilities anymore! And voting? Don't even get there, please.
This is what I was thinking also. Would it really be that difficult to control an autonomous vehicle with something like a video game joystick? A vehicle with four wheel steering could easily be controlled this way.
This. The steering wheel is the size it is because initially the driver had to be able to generate the torque required to steer the wheels.
Now we have power steering and it can be done without a human having turn the wheels themselves, so there is no real need for a steering wheel aside from nostalgia and deep set preference, things that Ive and Apple have been known to utterly subvert time and time again.
Freedom of humans is restricted already in case you haven’t noticed yet. That’s why the gun shootings you are talking about are illegal. If freedom wasn’t restricted, people would do all sorts of terrible things.
And that’s why your argument doesn’t make any sense. It’s about safety, not freedom. That’s why you need a drivers license before you are allowed to drive a car. That’s why we have tempo limits. Otherwise even more people would die in car accidents.
If AI is able to drastically reduce the number of people killed in car accidents, driving a car should be restricted. Regardless of whether you get a kick out of driving or not. Go to a race track with your car, same as people go to a shooting range with their guns.
