I’m kot sure why it’s a bad thing to have it out of the way on the floor. Ugly cable.

‘Most’? Haha. A couple of people whinging on these forums is not ‘most’.

Why because nice colours on tech = women? Move with the times dino. You’ll get your beige box from another manufacturer.

Has nothing to do with anything unless we’ve enter a weird roll reversal whereby the people normally complaining that Apple design with form over function are suddenly worried about what it looks like.

The tens, maximum.

I think you have misunderstood something I’m afraid chief. They’re not eluding to it being self powered, not even in the slightest.

It’s a pretty innovative design actually. If you go and look at one in person, you’ll see how completely different it is to the last.

Can you even hear what you’re saying?

Who’s rules say so?

Jony Ive is a world renowned designer. I’m sure you can come up with much better stuff, but until you do, he has the crown.
World reknown....which amounts to beans for all it gets you.

The list of Ive's failures are longer than his so-called acomplishments - G4 Cube, Apple Pencil charging, charging port on the bottom of mice, iOS/MacOs UI, any Mac over the last 25 years for improper thermals, lack of proper ports, Butterfly Keyboard, the Trashcan Mac.

Want me to go on?

Just make it thin... so thin it's not deep enough for an ethernet port... and anyway, nobody will notice we built a desktop computer needing a power brick...
What’s wrong with an external power brick you never see and an Ethernet port out of the way. I’d rather have no ports on the back of something and one cable running to the display. Makes it easier to hide cables.

The problem I have is not that you’re criticising a design.

It’s the lazy assumption that any design people don’t like is the fault of Ive but the ones people do like is the work of magical design pixies who we never hear about.
You ask why I citicize Ive's design choices, I answer and give a few examples. Reminder: The basis of my critique is that Apple's devices have to live in the same physical realm as everyone else's and ignoring these laws by "MUST BE THINNER" inevitably leads to bad design - I cannot see anything lazy with that.

Now you shift over to my criticism being invalid since the person that had publicly cemented and "advanced" the critiqued design trends at Apple for decades is no longer officially working directly at Apple ignoring that he is directly or indirectly still very influential regarding Apple's current design policys.

?

Then I shall criticize anything related to this tpoic with the term "School of Ive" in the future to also include any nameless designer currently working at Apple that hasn't reached godlike admiration for their pearls of wisdom in front of a white background - would that be more agreeable to you?

I’ve yet to meet anyone who doesn’t find the white bezel and huge chin incredibly ugly.

I’ve also heard “that was 100% designed for women” multiple times, lol.
Heard from who?
while I don’t like the chin at all I can see why they did it. It’s iconic and getting rid of it and going all screen would make it look like any other monitor out there. Nothing for it to stand out. But apple does need to learn to let go of that and just come out with clean designs that don’t need their iconic looks of the past.

Well, there you have it. Its extreme thinness is matched only by its extreme lack of features (ports, internal power supply, etc.).
That pretty much defines Ive designs.

Vastly opinionated. Want to talk about iMac iPod iPhone iPad? World renowned. That’s the thing.

List is subjective. A/P charging port was genius and for all intents and purposes IOS has been a hit. YMMV. But sure, it will be instructive to see what the complete list looks like.

Industrial design experts disagree. The Museum of Modern Art disagrees. Millions of happy Mac and iPhone users disagree.

Trying to make devices thinner doesn’t “inevitably” lead to bad design. It pushes the envelope forward. If we were all happy with mainframes, why make personal computers? Why make laptops? If they didn’t miniaturize, we never would have iPhones or any small electronics for that matter.

"hide cables"?? What cables other than ethernet? Where are you going to put the peripherals that connect VIA the cables? A desktop all-in-one is a tool. It should have maximum flexibility in terms of variety of ports and ease of access. SD card? Plug it in the back. External drive with USB-A? Plug it in the back (without a dongle). Clean cable management? Build the power supply into the monitor. The new iMac fails on all those fronts. It is a computer that requires numerous workarounds just to function the way people will need it to. Does it look good? That's a matter of individual taste. I find the colors garish and the white bezel distracting. If you want a beautiful sculpture, buy a Koons. If you want to actually USE your desktop computer, buy a 2020 iMac.

Let’s face it - Jony left because he hated doing the voiceover for launch videos (they probably made fun of his correct 🇬🇧 pronunciation of aluminium when filming them).

Best of both worlds now, innit. All the design freedom with none of the marketing cheese. He just wanted to draw stuff.

I know people who like(d) the butterfly keyboard, but I admit there was some bad press about it. But that really wasn't the point of my post. IMO, people grow by making mistakes and trying new things. (except for those who are not capable of learning and keep repeating the same mistakes)
My 2017 MBP is the best computer I've ever owned. If there were a non-negligible amount of people who had issues with the keyboard, I'm glad they revised it... But my keyboard still works flawlessly.

I have little concern for the entitled negative voices hating on the iMac because of their subjective design opinions. Haters gonna hate; it's a good-looking computer that serves its intended market well. If you want 12 ports, no power brick, and black bezels, then you are not the intended market.

That’s called a Mac mini and an external display.

The problem with apple as it stands right now is they have very few options for people in that target market unless you want to spend as much money on a Mac as a nicely equipped used Honda.

I retire what I said about Ive recently, Ive definitely lost his touch and I'd like new talent to take over please.

This new iMac joins the Apple-WTF™ hall of fame.

i honestly don't understand the thought process here. they had a choice between slightly thicker screen with no chin or a thinner screen with a chin. when using the computer, you will always see the chin while the only time you will notice the thickness if you are walking from the side.
again, you're throwing out assumptions without wondering the possiblities.

could it not be that it's better for thermals by putting it under the screen as opposed to behind the screen (for this year's iMac as well as future M chips)?

could it not be that putting the speakers on the bottom of the device for the purposes of better spatial audio performance is going to result in a thicker bottom border anyways?

is it not easier to assemble the device when putting it on the bottom of the device, therefore keeping costs in check, negating the need to raise prices?

would making the display "thicker" result in empty space since the board wouldn't be able to utilize the extra room?

is it not possible that they did it for the all of the above reasons?
