no expansion at all

If you order an iMac today, it’s a month-long wait to get a base model. Some configurations are delayed until late July. For a computer that is ā€œfuglyā€ with a power brick that screams people’s names, it seems to be selling rather well. It looks like Apple has a much better grasp of most people’s tastes than the MR Apple-haters crowd.
How do you know it is selling well? It could also be that Apple is not able to make many given all the supply chain issues.

If you want height adjustment then that would be an extra $999.95.

If Apple had only priced the HDR stand reasonably.

As such, there was no expectation they could implement it into the iMac for less.

That said, a lesser version with only height adjustment without the ability to pivot orientation (the chin would look even worse running vertically), would have been great.

No wonder it was so thin, has extremely poor thermals, a weak "selection" of ports and is really just an iPad on a stand.

Ive once again proving he's one of the worst designers out there

You can use two reams of paper for height adjustment. It's a brilliant design decision that Johnny would surely approve of.

I'm not sure how much of a technical achievement it is though. I mean, what are the technical breakthroughs? Ethernet port in a power brick?

I suppose I'm mainly referring to the M1 SoC enabling such a form factor while being very potent and sipping power. What Apple has done with their transition to their own silicon is a major technical achievement. New iMac is, to me, an impressive computer. I just think it needs to come with a heterosexual colour option and also needs an Apple logo to break up the chin. Oh and 24" is too small for me. I'll be awaiting a bigger Pro model with interest, but that will probably be £3,000...

All that aside, I think it's a mighty machine but just not for me unless things change.

ETA: Oh and I've never once had any desktop PC that didn't have its own PSU...

So I think having the Ethernet port on the power brick is brilliant since it reduces the number of wires going to the back of the iMac, but they could have done that without making the machine so thin that they could not put a headphone jack on the back. Anybody using external speakers is going to hate having the wire come out the side.

I think Apple should target the ā€œno peripheralsā€ market with the low end as long as they do more ports on the higher end pro machines. I don’t really feel for the folks wanting USB-A five years after USB-C was released, but Ethernet, HDMI and SD cards are fairly pervasive.

I agree. Of course the M1 is also in the MacBook Air and Pro. Sipping power in a desktop is not really an issue but in a laptop it is an achievement.

I am also waiting for the larger iMac but I expect to be disappointed, so maybe the 14 inch MBP is next on the list.

I'd imagine we probably won't stop seeing his influenced products until maybe 2025. It will be interesting to see Apple then without Ive or Jobs having recent hands.
First, don't make Jobs and Ive out to be some superhuman. If they can do what they did there are plenty of very talented and visionary people left in this world. Neither one of them were gods. Secondly, we've seen where the company has gone to without Jobs for many years. Remember he's been gone for MANY years and Tim Cook has turned this company into one of the richest world wide with amazing products.

The reason why Ive appears to be impossible to replace is because back in the late 90's-early 2000's computers were beige and boring with no imagination to entice the user to enjoy it. Just being able to get on the internet using AOL and dialup or DSL was a big thing.

Ive is a very talented person but Apple knows the direction they're going in terms of design so they don't need him as if he can't be replaced. Good Lord stop worshiping people as if they are higher than the sky. šŸ™„

It has his signature all over it. Form over function, Lack of I/O, Bold yet questionable design, and an external power brick resulting from an overly thin design. The one negative I really have is the lack of ports. It's like the iMac got the 2016 MacBook Pro treatment and we all know how that went down.

The Ethernet port in the AC adapter screamed Jony Ive
I’m kot sure why it’s a bad thing to have it out of the way on the floor. Ugly cable.
well considering that most people already hated this design, there's no difference
ā€˜Most’? Haha. A couple of people whinging on these forums is not ā€˜most’.
I’ve yet to meet anyone who doesn’t find the white bezel and huge chin incredibly ugly.

I’ve also heard ā€œthat was 100% designed for womenā€ multiple times, lol.
Why because nice colours on tech = women? Move with the times dino. You’ll get your beige box from another manufacturer.

the screen is black when it is off
Has nothing to do with anything unless we’ve enter a weird roll reversal whereby the people normally complaining that Apple design with form over function are suddenly worried about what it looks like.
people flock here by the thousands
The tens, maximum.
It's not really an AIO though, a battery UPS is not built in like it is with iPad and MacBook M1s: you need to buy a third party UPS battery and keep the magnetic power cable plugged in tight all the time, if you want to take it on the kitchen counter, or "sneak it into home spaces where you wouldn’t normally place a computer" without having to shut down. And the power cord and UPS are not at all beautiful, which is why Apple rarely shows them in their ads. They show them turned on while unplugged, which is false advertising.
I think you have misunderstood something I’m afraid chief. They’re not eluding to it being self powered, not even in the slightest.

they sacrificed innovative design for thinness. Its not that much different from previous incarnations, excluding the colours.
It’s a pretty innovative design actually. If you go and look at one in person, you’ll see how completely different it is to the last.

No wonder, the iMac only has like 2-4 USB-C Ports. No USB-A, no Card Reader, no expansion at all
Can you even hear what you’re saying?
An AIO doesn't have the power supply hanging out it's backside like a strand of grass.
Who’s rules say so?
No wonder it was so thin, has extremely poor thermals, a weak "selection" of ports and is really just an iPad on a stand.

Ive once again proving he's one of the worst designers out there
Jony Ive is a world renowned designer. I’m sure you can come up with much better stuff, but until you do, he has the crown.

Jony Ive  he nearly destroyed Apples Mac Book row over nearly 6 years.

– Maybe because of him we must look always onto this ugly chin they did not take away.
– They did not make this iMac 24" a bit thicker to integrate all sockets at the sides with all sockets you need like HDMI, SD, USB A 3 – Jony loves to force us for gymnastics if we want to change/insert a plug on back side – just stupid 😔
– They drive the cooling ventilation against any thermodynamic law (better to open on top and also more silent
– Result: late this iMac 24" has a lot of cables from back to front working side and adapters –nice! šŸ™ƒ

these aspects would be the tasks of a clever designer of technical devices, Jony is not. šŸ‘Ž

oh no...

I'm now worried about

  • poor thermal design that melts the adhesive around the screen
  • poor thermal design that results in YouTube causing the fans to scream
  • poor thermal design that leads to throttling the CPU t o perform like a Pentium-II-333Mhz
  • unergonomic keyboard
  • keyboard keys that fail with a mean time to failure of 3-6 months
  • disastrous shrill keyboard click sound
  • so thin the design bends by itself over time
  • hidden issues like ports performing differently to identical ports on the same machine
  • dongle hell - overheating, failing, and a lottery on which ones are reliable or not
  • ...

.. going on experience of his MacBook designs ....

I really don't cared the Ive had his hand in this iMac, it was stated when he left he would continue designing for Apple. I do think its seriously wrong to consider Ive in the same vein as Steve Jobs, as Steve was the visionary.

Amen on that! Astonishing some people believe after Apple selling iMacs for twenty years they have no idea what their customers want. Cracks me up.

So one could assume it is Ive’s fault that this machine has ports like a Touch Bar MBP?? It’s Ive’s funky choice to relocate the power supply into an ugly bulky power brick rather than integrating the power supply into the machine.

Jobs lived how simple and elegant the iMac was. No need for bulky external power bricks or dingles to use every day accessories. Remember if a damn DESKTOP computer. EXTREME thinness isn’t relevant in a design that doesn’t get moved. I look at iMacs from the front. I don’t care if it’s as thick as the 2009 model or the 2012 model, it’s only getting moved when cleaning the table it sits on.

I’m happy Jony Ive is gone. It seems Steve Jobs kept him in check. Since Tim doesn’t have the balls that a good boss does, liddle’ Timmy let Jony walk all all over him. Same reason why Forstall got booted after Jobs death.

Why did they keep the usbc charging port on the bottom of the mouse?

An Apple store finally opened recently and there was like 2 people at the new iMac display table. Never seen apple release a product and hardly anyone had interest in it.

funny part is they had the ā€œsilverā€ one at the end on another table by itself.
And when I recently went into an Apple Store in the SF Bay Area there we a lot of people looking at them, managed by Apple’s social distancing requirements.
