You need an iPhone to make phone calls. You need a Macbook Pro to browse MacRumors. What life critical function will this "third" device provide???

I find the fact it could be aware of your environment yet slip into your pocket a huge privacy concern.

If these become commonplace. Can you imagine someone starting a conversation with you in coffee shop. Do they have one in their pocket. If your name is mentioned, and with timestamps, geo location data and data from the coffee shop identify you. Then glean from that conversation any personal insights into your opinions, politics, likes and dislikes.

The data mining on that data it’s collected would be so valuable, not to mention surveillance a government could implement.

A small puck with eight spider legs that can curl up to fit in your pocket. When you sit down it crawls out and sits on your desk. Then you can have it get you food from the kitchen, make appointments for you, walk your dog, balance your checkbook, give you a massage, and make calls on your phone.

Magic AI. But in reality, it will be a small HomePod with a camera that records your life and puts it online. Small enough to carry in your pocket.

We'll see. Let's just say with current technology I don't expect much.

We may have different definitions of the word "details".

Anyway, sounds like the Humane AI pin thing, and we all know how well that went.

I've admired Tim Cook's leadership since he took over from Jobs. He's not the visionary that Jobs was, but people like that who can also run a company profitably don't grow on trees. Folks should keep that in mind when criticizing Apple for not being as innovative and forward thinking as in the past.

That said, in an open letter to Cook, I'd say: "How in Hell did you let Ive get away?" Reading this story, he's probably trying to kick his own butt!

Sounds like how segways were described before they were released in terms of how much they'd change the world

Details have leaked about the device that OpenAI is developing with former Apple designer Jony Ive. OpenAI is acquiring io, the hardware-based AI startup co-created by Jony Ive, and the first product is one of a family of devices the company intends to launch.

Ive and OpenAI CEO Sam Altman revealed details about the project in an internal staff call reviewed by The Wall Street Journal. According to the report, the device isn't a pair of glasses, given that Ive has been skeptical about building something you have to wear. It's not a phone either, since Ive and Altman want to help wean people off of screens.

Rather, it's described as a "third core device" after a MacBook Pro and an iPhone. From the report:
According to the WSJ report, Altman told OpenAI staff that stealth will be important for their ultimate success to avoid competitors copying the product before it's ready. Ive's team is said to have been in touch with suppliers who will be able to ship the device at scale.

According to Altman, OpenAI is "not going to ship 100 million devices literally on day one." But he believes the company will ship that amount of high-quality devices "faster than any company has ever shipped 100 million of something new before." The goal is to release the first device by late next year.

Ive gave Altman a prototype of the first device to take home to test, said the OpenAI CEO. "I've been able to live with it, and I think it is the coolest piece of technology that the world will have ever seen," he said.

OpenAI's acquisition of io is subject to regulatory approval and is expected to be completed this summer. It is OpenAI's biggest acquisition to date, with the ChatGPT-maker reportedly paying $6.5 billion for io.

Sounds very useless, especially knowing that similar devices have failed. Why would you want even more devices? 🤔 People want fewer devices, not more. Ever since Jony Ive left Apple, no one knows what his company has accomplished since then. He’s definitely a winner in this project, but I’m not sure about Open AI. It sounds like it’s set to fail and create a lot of difficulties for Open AI. They would be better off concentrating on improving their existing projects, especially ChatGPT and Sora, rather than spending billions on futile ones😳

I realize I might be in the tiny minority on this one, but how people are so willing to willingly share all that information with A.I. or "A.I.", have it basically spy on you at all times and share that info with whatever servers, your whole life just open for a company or a state.

It disgusts me.
It sounds dystopian until you realize the entire world is already carrying internet connected slabs packed with sensors everywhere they go.

I do agree though.

I'd suggest my S10 Apple Watch is an untapped resource. If I could get better responses from Siri (on-device another plus!), longer battery life, the ability to store what audiobooks/music/podcasts specifically that I want (Libby, Audible, Hoopla; not just most recent 3 podcasts, etc; maybe I'm missing something?!), and the ability to dock it as a computer (when charging): that'd be pretty cool. I know it would cost more and maybe weigh a bit more, but it seems like semiconductor technology is pacing forward for this to be possible.

Tim Apple won't be happy about this. How the turntables have turned. From being the innovator in the 2000s to becoming Nokia / BlackBerry / Microsoft (Vista) in the 2020s. It's probably over for Apple in 5-10 years. Hasta la vista baby!
😂 🤣

And that is all based on human knowledge and products, including word and other processors. Including fonts.

I sure hope those people will get paid for that.

AI as it is, is a system built by and trained on human data. Intellectual property. Without it, it’s a big nothingness.
Function of a word processor is not owned by Microsoft. There are open access fonts or the genAI simply ask you to pay for fonts before you can use them. Who says I will distribute the movie based on a book I have bought? I am allowed to make a LOTR game and as long as I do not distribute it, I am not earning any money. The game producers will be angry though. I am quite sure the helpful genAI will block me doing something illegal:)

I got it... - it will be a butt plug. With a two pound battery neatly attached to your waste and a cord masked as a fine looking tail of your choice (that of a mouse, rat, fox, or a cat). You'll be able to control it with the fine contractions of your glutes.

It will be a Ballie-like" device. The difference will be
  • Ballie will come with Gemini (already announced) and this one with Chat GPT
  • Ballie is a bit bigger and can "walk around"
  • Ballie will also have a projector
Depending on the price and reviews we are seriously considering a Ballie should it be offered in Europe.
The only open question is: can it run through the rooms without "Ballie phone home". We don't want our home to be exposed to outer world.
The main use case will be hands-free media selection and projection anywhere in the house, specially when working in the kitchen.

I was literally joking about it being an iPod touch without the touch, but he’s literally serious.
They are going to release a third generation iPod shuffle type product and it will meet the same fate.
This whole unveiling was a shot across the bow for Google and Gemini…all for an unseen product that won’t potentially ship for two years. Despite what the Twitter hype monkeys will have you believe, this all remains a jump ball with a few companies having varying leads and overall edges. Far from over.
