But that was not recognized until much later on.

IBM PC (and similar computers) ruled back then. Steve's Mac was a first gen device with a small screen. And at $2,500 was way out of reach for many people back in 1984. Back then engineering wages were around less than $10/hr.

I'm not saying it was a commercially great idea. But everyone credits the Mac with setting the stage for basically the entire way we use modern computers. This time around Apple can afford to take the hit for a while. Also they even then targeted the high end education market and wealthy end users and companies. That's how these things start. It was the iMac that made it really popular and even then that was an expensive and strangely limited/forward looking computer.

Not saying they will be able to do it. Apple hasn't pulled off a world changing revolutionary product since Steve. We'll see.

The original McIntosh couldn’t run most applications made for the Apple II.
That’s why the Apple II continued to exist several years after.
Macs will continue to exist and be used for decades, but “runs macOS” has never been the mark of a successful product.
The iPod didn’t run macOS, neither did the iPhone, or the iPad, or the Apple Watch, or the AirPods… but Apple sells more of those every year than they do products that run macOS.

I agree but technically Steve did specifically say it runs "OSX".

They all run a variant of macOS which is a variant of Unix which runs everything that's not descended from Microsoft lineage.

You're completely right in principle though. None of that matters. Everything runs Unix because it gets out of the way and lets you do the thing you actually are using the computer for.

Wearing those ridiculously expensive cyber goggles is not worth it over just watching some normal videos for free.

Yeah but you aren't watching those videos for free. That computer wasn't free. YouTube doesn't just magically appear out of the Ether. And both would be a complete technological marvel to someone from even the early 90s. Not to mention the incredibly fast wireless connection you're watching them on. It's all just normalized for you. And not nearly as bulky as it was then. Give it time.

It probably won't be as world-changing as the Mac. But Apple entering the AR market (with VR coming along for the ride) with interesting tech is a smart move and ripe for exploiting in the manner in which Apple is going forward. AVP is just the beginning, to give developers and people a taste of the potential.

BTW... a ton of credit for the first Mac needs to go to Xerox PARC (Palo Alto Research Center, in Silicon Valley) where a lot of the tech they researched and developed (a computer with a mouse and GUI) was viewed by Jobs during a visit, where he got the idea for the Mac.

EDIT: The mouse was invented by Doug Engelbart at nearby SRI (Stanford Research Institute) way back in 1970.

Sure, but doing things in 3D is the only functional advantage over the decades-established personal computer.

And it’s pretty obvious the VisionOS is nowhere near as versatile as macOS when it comes to actually getting things done. It’s basically an iPad in midair that costs three times more. DOA.

So sorry, but reading descriptions of what the VP experience was like for tech journalists and podcasters is to me akin to describing the color blue to a man blind from birth. Or attempting to teach someone to tie a shoe without any use of hands or eyes.

For the love of god do NOT bring your guitar and have a family singalong on the beach. I PROMISE you no one came to the beach to listen to that. 🤫

Sounds impressive. Would like to try this out. Will be a long time before it is available in other countries.

3500 dollars? I said that is the most expensive helmet in the world. And it doesn't appeal to business customers because it doesn't have a keyboard. Which makes it not a very good email machine.

Everyone keeps saying this is ridiculously priced. Everything in it is new top of the line tech. It is far above any other VR device sold and is essentially a full-blown MacBook as well.
It’s not over priced for what it is. Nobody is really saying that. This really is cutting edge technology. It’s overpriced for what people are willing to pay. Especially in a time when inflation is insane and wages haven’t gone up, a $4,000 device that people have never tried before or were sure it would fit in their life is a big ask. Even at $2k- $2.5k I would really have to stretch things to justify it. But more than that? That’s the price of my first car. And to figure that out in my budget is quite a task

The Apple Watch was absolutely revolutionary.
Sure, it took a few years to get there, but I don’t think there’s any denying that by the series 4 the thing had become apples second most impactful product, only beneath the iPhone.
It wasn’t the first smart watch, but it certainly was the first to do everything well.
Same goes for AirPods, while them in isolation as wireless headphones weren’t necessarily that revolutionary, they were the first truly wireless headphones that “felt” like something people wanted to use and not a cool gadget for nerds who didn’t mind dealing with pairing menus and pin codes and terrible device switching

This is all very true, but also important to remember that the capabilities of producing these in the millions just is not there.
So Apple selling it for a price that customers would be “willing to pay” isn’t even necessarily the smartest decision, as they’re only rumored to be able to make about 100,000 functional units in its first year, and that… Really isn’t that many.

To put that into perspective, can’t remember exactly where I’ve read it, but Apple sold about 600,000 Mac Studios last year.
The original iPhone sold 6.1 million units in its first 11 months, and that was only limited to six countries and certain carriers.

I don’t consider myself to be rich by any means, and by AVP launch, I will have saved enough to buy a Vision Pro + an extra battery.

It’s called a savings account, and everyone will have had about 9 months to save.

Why are all products supposed to be priced for impulse purchasing, and not viewed as something you might have to save a few paychecks for?

Probably because it’s not productive for the vast majority and depreciates 50% in first year? With hardly any software and can’t be worn for more than 30 min at a time?
