Chipping away at mine. 5.6 miles a say down to 4.8. I’m not enjoying the required effort though!

I walk a lot every day, but this latest June challenge is ridiculous.

While mine is calories, this is the reason I'm not even doing mine this month. Last month I walked a lot, and I completed the challenge. That isn't sustainable for the rest of your life. Yeah you want to work out and get in shape, but living your life by the watch standards is not a good idea. I needed a break, and hopefully this kinda resets the watch.

This is also why I think my biggest disappointment from the keynote was them not addressing challenges and maybe making the watch a more productive and variable experience. I've had the watch for close to a year and a half (I bought it in October 2019) and while I close my rings, I'm actually getting a little bored with it. This watch needs a new spark or something to make these things fun, and not feel like a chore.

For the most part, I’ve given up on these monthly goals, since they’ve been rather ridiculous lately. Once in a while, I get a “reasonable“ one, and achieve it, but some of these are almost unhealthy. It’s all to do with whatever algorithm Apple uses to establish these goals.

I do close my rings every day, but have stopped updating either the move or exercise goals.

I do hope that Apple will do something about this in future versions of the watch software. There’s being healthy, and then, there’s overdoing it.

The Fitness app needs a bona-fide "rest day" that doesn't count against any trends/streaks. Closing rings can be part of a fitness goal, but just importantly are rest/rejuvenation days.
This (a rest day or a day with less exercise) is why I typically don't close my Move and Exercise rings all 7 days of a week. I typically (barring weather or other things that interrupt a workout routine) do not run on Fridays. And so my Move and Exercise totals don't meet the ring goals, which are set to be closer to what I get on a day when I can run at least 5-6 miles.

I don't mind because I know it is import to give yourself a rest from time to time. But I also understand the allure of closing the rings each day, too.

Couldn’t you just set it to the minimum on those days? Doesn’t have to be hard exercise.

I have thought about that, but it is more trouble than it is worth (to me). I really don't mind if I miss the exercise and/or move ring once a week. :)

Besides, when we replace the low budget recumbent bicycle machine with a mid to high(er) end spin cycle, then I shouldn't have any problems meeting both rings on the day a week I don't run.

I like to close my rings every day. 273 days in a row.

I can appreciate the sentiments re the AW "dictating" your life ...
I can appreciate that the AW should allow for rest days ...
I've had my AW for over 5 years, I played with the move goal and have set it low, 300kcal, intentionally. I average 1,100+, for the last 5 months I've done 16 miles on a spin bike, every day. I can take some of the challenges but not all. eg I'm at 60/160 miles of walking this month, not going to make it, I don't care ...
You are exercising not to satisfy the watch, you're doing it for yourself, the watch helped me for the probably first 2 or so years but I would not need the challenge feature anymore. Though it would be nice to have more of a variety of challenges, esp in your favorite workout if its not running/walking ...
I still love my watch though ...

As stupid and silly as this sounds, there are times when I do feel like I'm just exercising to satisfy my watch. When I got this I got it as a motivator to move and exercise more. Then I started closing all the rings and then it became habitual. Now it's about closing the rings and satisfying the challenges to keep your "streak" alive and before you know it that habit does start feeling like a chore. Maybe I do have OCD, or maybe it's just anxiety, but I start worrying if I haven't closed my rings for a day. I shouldn't, but that's where the habit comes in.

That seems like cheating to me.
I wouldn’t say so. Nothing wrong with having an easier target on rest days, for those that aren’t able to push themselves 24/7. Rest days are important, so having a reduced goal for those days makes sense. I reduce mine when I’m unwell, as there’s nothing worse than breaking months of ring closures with a day or two feeling off 😫

25,900 calories
863 calories per day approximately
I had worked it down to 819 this morning by having a few 1000+ days

Working crazy hours and sitting in a car WAY too many hours to make this 'easy.'
Drove 627 miles in three days for work. NOT fun.

Yeah, and if you are working toward a specific goal of some kind, the challenges may or may not fit what you need to do to achieve. I left my calorie goal at slightly more than what I'll do without any kind of extra activity, but slightly less than what I average per day, including a 20 - 30 minute walk we do with our dog every day. She needs it, and so do we.

It killed me when I was training for a half-marathon that the challenge didn't match up at all with the hours and distance I was already putting in.

Isn’t the point of the rings about forming good habits though? That’s how I see it. Less sitting. More moving. I’ve lost over a stone and am actually at my correct weigh for the first time in my life.

Yeah, maybe OCD or maybe anxiety, or maybe too Type A. I'm the same way. I don't particularly like this trait of mine. So maybe in a year I'll ditch my AW because it's running my life.

This is the case with me - I have long-ish term (as in the overall year) running goals:
  • I ran approximately 1357 miles last year, I would like to exceed that total and I am on track so far (885 miles as of yesterday).
  • Regularly run at least one 14 mile (or longer) distance each week, to prepare for the Air Force Half Marathon race in September. I am doing pretty good so far: I got to 12 miles earlier this year and have run 14 miles twice (this distance is my personal best).
If a monthly challenge can be met or if pushing to meet one gets closer to my goals, then great. If not, then I will appreciate the monthly goals I can meet all the more.
