Samsung had to know this was coming, they knew what they were doing even if they won't admit it.

LOL, the after-hours market reaction is even better, up 1.4%, about an $8.7 billion increase in market capitalization.

No matter, Samsung will appeal. This isn't over.

Maybe on that notice that the UK judge wants Apple to put on its website, they can also put a link to the US verdict. :D

Too bad. Now Samsung will have to get this money back by charging Apple more for components which is reasonable as this fine is considered an integral part of "the cost of business".

Exactly.

Gear up for a $1200 iPhone everybody.

I am a bit confused. Wasn't the verdict that Apple and Samsung owed each other about 20m plus they had a ban on the sale on some devices in Korea?

Anybody know where we can find what these patents actually are? I'd like to know what silly software patents of Apple's were infringed.

Why is this bad? These are not obscure software patents such as "internet test-taking method." They are brand-new ideas invented by Apple with the iPhone. Let other companies come up with their own original ideas and sell them.

They are considered "new ideas" by Apple home court. Next court - not in California - may rule otherwise. Notice how this court rules that Samsung infringed on almost all claimed patents whilst Apple infringed none. That just smacks of bias and the judge was a big part of it.

Samsung's claims against Apple up next:

'711 Patent on iPhone 3G No.
'460 on iPhone 3G: no.
'711 iPhone 3GS: No
'893 iPhone 3GS No
'460: literally infirngement for 3GS: no
'516 No
'460 no across the board
No on all but the iPod touch. It's up next... No across the board. Wow. Nothing on Samsung's utility patents.

Damages from Samsung to Apple: zero.

lololololololol

for a second i was shocked i always forget that a billion in english isnt a billion but "only" a milliarde in german :D

I figure that Google is intended "evil" that Apple wants to wage war with. And Apple will probably sue them next.

My question is.. what happens when Apple destroys all iPhone look-a-likes, and has a monopoly?

A monopoly? What did smartphones look like before the iPhone? They were all blackberries with keyboards. Why couldn't companies have kept selling ones like that? Oh yeah, because everybody wants an iPhone, so let's just rip that off.

Oddly enough

This is about the way I thought it was going to go. The tech press is almost uniformly scornful of this trial, and in favor, I guess, of Apple -- or some other company -- working for five years to produce something genuinely new, and to watch it being copied to death within a few years. I won't go any further about the implications for the phone and tablet markets, but I guess I do think this is a big blow for the Android group.

Wow, this is truly Huge.

Finally, some real justice and true protection for intellectual property and patents. This will get Google's attention as well of course.

OK, so I guess Samsung wasn't violating the Sherman Antitrust act. It's a bone to Samsung.

If you put a bunch of people to rule on evidence they don't understand then the way it goes is this way. Apple is an american company and Samsung is not, then Apple will always win hands down in the USA.

This case will of course find is way in to higher court and hopefully there will be some people with the basic understanding of technology that will struck it down.

There is after all a lot of prior works before I phone that invalidates this ruling, Apple them self have stolen the ideas. And the patents ruled upon in this case is a joke in general since its basic human interaction and normal usage of technology that for some reason the US patent office gave away like as much else the US patent office did not understand what it was for.

Only way this will play out in the end is that all customers on all front are the losers especially higher instances stand by this ruling. Because then all real competition is crushed and also no one can develop any kind of phones, computers or any other tech that is dependent on software.

So not even as an Apple owner my self would think this ruling is a benefit for us the customers or the general population of this planet.

You have no idea what you're talking about. You'd make a good juror.

I'm literally laughing on the floor after seeing the sentence "Damages from Samsung to Apple: ZERO" :D
