I would assume this is more so you don't clear all notifications by accident.
Almost like confirming that you want to clear them.
I've noticed that some apps have the badge option, and others don't - maybe it depends on the apps own data/requirements? (same with sound option - some do / some don't)

Apple Store App - does have sound option though!
F1Live24 - as above (no badge option, but does have sound option)
Virgin Atlantic
CNN INTL - Sound option only
Guitar Hero has badge option, but not sound!
iSIXT - same as Guitar Hero

Same problem here but tried a few different emails and one worked first time, i think they must have already been taken.

For anybody who is wondering of its ready for everyday use, I wouldn't recommend it. I've been using it since Thursday, it's usable but some things are quite laggy and buggy. No crashes yet, more UI related bugs. And battery life is a killer, using about twice as much battery as I did on 4.3.3 at the moment. Usage 2:25hrs, 50% battery left! And that's just from using safari for casual browsing (no videos) and sending 2 emails...

I got iOS 5 the day it came out for devs and I've just started to notice over the past 2-3 days that it lags quite a lot during random times. It was working fine until now. Maps seems to lag all the time. Touching a location takes a few seconds to load it, kind of feels like my iPhone 4 is like my old iPhone 3G...
That plus the whole system just seems to hiccup every now and then. I'm going to wait for the next beta to see if it gets better. Otherwise, I'm downgrading back to 4.3 until it releases this fall.
