8gb iPhone:

564 songs
4 movies
13 photos

1.9 gigs left.

And if I NNNNEEEEEEEEEEEDDDDDDD more music, I have my 30gig video that has, wait for it... 600 songs! (and an entire season of How I Met Your Mother)

I never understood why people need over 10,000+ songs with them on the go.

I have 500 songs, and that's plenty. I only have what i like on my iPhone and what i listen too. Not stuff i haven't even heard

Because SOME people NEED to HAVE a SOUNDTRACK for their ENTIRE life.

I've worked with people like this...they spend more time trying to pick the next song to enhance their mood than they do working. It's highly annoying. One dude spent about 5 minutes in between each and every song trying to find the next song to keep him going. Then he worked during the song. So for every hour, he spent maybe 30 minutes looking for music instead of working. It's no wonder he wasn't done with the job by the deadline.

This was my favorite quote:
I am just ALWAYS trying to think of every scenario where i might want a certain song that isnt there.

Ahh, the important things in life. ALWAYS thinking about every scenario where you might need a certain song? If a certain song is required for every minute of your life, then here's an idea.........USE AN IPOD. The iPhone was never designed nor marketed to be the last music device you will ever need. It was designed and marketed to allow you to have some (but not all) music with you on the go without carrying an extra device. Remember it's a phone. 8GB is plenty of space on a *phone* for some music.

PS - OP, I'm also now curious what music it is you listen to that isn't available through internet channels? Just curious....

I have that much music because I can listen to something different every night at my job and not hear the same thing twice in a year. Of course I bring my 160GB Classic with me with all my music on it. The iPhone stays in the car since I am in it 11 hours a day. It contains all my most favorite music as well as Opie and Anthony daily shows downloaded via Audible.

On one of my iPhones, I have all my music purchased in iTunes, 2,566 songs and all the music videos purchased as well.

On my other iPhone, I have all the music contained in my playlists. It keeps things interesting and fun. No I can't survive on just an iPod or an iPhone, I need both.

I have it all worked out and I like it! :D:)

Now that i have apps and ALL of my music on my mac's itunes instead on my old PC laptop, i am REALLY hating having only 8GB of space!!! I guess this will NEVER replace my ipod, even a 16GB would not have replaced my ipod. I like to have ALL music on my ALL THE TIME.. I mean, i have about 28 GB of music, which is not a TON (i know people who have more) but still.. its WAY more that i can narrow down to put onto my iphone and make it usable as an ipod..

WEll, i guess i am just lucky that i just replaced my stolen ipod with an 80 GB. I wil NEVER run otu of room there.

Just wanted to vent.. any MAYBE someone will read this thread before they ask

"is 8GB enough?"

IMO that is absolutely excessive. I don't care how much time commuting you have, a human being cannot manage to actually listen to 28 gigs of music.

It is nice having it all at once, but I found after going from my 30 gig classic to a 8 gig touch (and now 16 gig iPhone) I can manage all my media keepng in mind SEVERAL CONTINUOUS WEEKS of music on an iPod is nice but rather impractical.

I have over 120gb music.

And I have 0 (zero) songs on my iphone. You can easily access your home mac and stream your music to iphone. Also, I have tuner (hundreds of 128k radio stations), then I have last.fm..(again very super good quality)
Then I have flytunes.fm shortcut and finally seeqpod.

Now why would I need to carry all my songs with me again? :D

That's the whole idea of 3G....so you can do these things. tsk tsk tsk

And you couldn't foresee space becoming an issue when you knew you'd have your music, videos, pictures + camera and tons of downloadable apps and games all on one device?

I would have bought a 32GB or 64GB iPhone if they had one, instead I had to settle for the 16GB.

You get a big fat ZERO for planning ahead.

i dont see why people need sooooo many songs on their MP3 devices... like you can only listen to sooo many songs in a day and i GUARANTEE that those of you with 80+gb or whatever have probably 70+GB of music that you NEVER listen too!!!!!!! so whats the point!!!! someone please tell me!? is it just to show off to your friends that you have 4532925535 songs on your ipod? or what... well guess what!? no one gives a flying ****!!! so create a playlist with your weekly top 40-50 songs .... for the avid listeners maybe top 100 and your good to go!! what more do you want!!! i have 454 songs and i listen to maybe MAYBE 100 of those songs any given week..and i love music!!!! so stop showing off and use your head!

Here's the number one reason why people want all their music with them. Say you're driving along in your car and a conversation sparks up about a certain artist or song. You say, oh, I like that song... lemme play it for you... uh... drats... I didn't sync it to my iPhone... looks like the mood is dead now.

I have a 16GB iPhone and that's JUST enough to put all of my FAVORITE music on it. Then I usually just put it on shuffle because I know it won't play anything I don't like. My truly favorite artists have entire albums, but some of my less favorite artists only get the songs I like put on my iPhone. It works, I'm happy. The hard part is when I get a new CD or something.... and deciding what to take OFF. Gah!

Ok.. first i have a 2G iphone.. Second.. I didnt CHOOSE which iphone to get, i got it for free...

As for having a soundtrack for life, well, i'm not THAT obsessive with the songs where i will waste 5-10 minutes picking ONE SONG.. but i do have MULTIPLE albums from each artist, which means if i want my collection for an entire artist, then i would take up close to a gig for SOME of the artists..
Also, i go out a lot, usually to places that aren't bars or clubs, which means that our music comes USUALLY from my iphone.. so i WOULD like to have atleast all my favorites on there.

I dont have a top 40.. I guess people who arent into music arent going to get it. but i worked at a radio station, i have bands that never really "made it" but their good bands. I LOVE my music, an dlike to have it on me.. why is that so bad?

I listed to mostly punk rock, and theres DEFINITELY some good online channels, but if i relied only on those channels, i would miss out on some of my favorite music. I LOVE going to shows and supporting bands and buying their albums there because thats the ONLY place you can get the album. I also LIKE have the album art IN MY HAND. i'm not a fan of downloading music. Call me old fashioned. Plus, buying directly form the band at their show supports the band even more, and is usually cheaper for me.

AT&T's terms and agreements say you can't use the cell-phone network (3G or EDGE) to stream MUSIC or VIDEO. Go ahead and read it sometime.

that deciding WHAT TO TAKE OFF was killing me last night. I made my playlist of all the songs/artists I wanted and there wasnt enough room, so i had to go through and take off a few... it was impossible.. i had to loose my johnny cash.

As has already been pointed out, your solution lies in creating a handful of Smart Playlists (containing your favourite songs & albums, different genres for different occasions, etc.) that sync with your iPhone.

Also, think of the smaller capacity as the perfect way to rediscover old and forgotten songs.

I hear ya! I also listen to a lot of punk and unpopular bands. I hate pop (anything on the radio now is pretty much pop) and I like listening to MY music. Friends think I'm weird because they've never heard of most of my music... that's because I FOUND this music... I didn't come to me over the radio or at a friends house... I did the work, found out what I like, dug deeper, found artists that had the sound I desired. I also listen to a ton of Ska (which died years ago) and the only Ska that most people know is Mighty Mighty Bosstones and Reel Big Fish (not a huge fan of either of them). Maybe part of me likes the sound of the music I listen to and part of me likes the originality of my music collection. The radio makes me sick and it always has.... they never play stuff I like.

Download a song by beNUTS called "Turn Off Your Radio" and you'll understand.

the only practical solution seems to be to just buy 20,000 iphones and put one song on each one of them and then play them all at once all the time

since you have to have ALL of your tunes with you at ALL times

yep.. i'm not as worried about whats on the radion and wgats not... just what sounds good to me.. i love my music collection and dont want playlists..i want it all there, all the time.. thats it.. oh well.. i have my ipod which worksfor me for now. i cant remember the last time i listened to terrestrial radio. between my ipod, iphone, and satellite, its been years

OK, so the solution has been mentioned: carry an iPod for these times. I don't understand why this is so difficult for some to process. Like I said before, the phone was not marketed as being something that was there to hold your entire music collection. No one ever said that...it's a *phone*. I'm sorry that you might have to carry around a second device, but as soon as you find another phone that is capable of carrying that much music, let me know...and buy it!

I don't think most people get perturbed that you/others might actually like music. It's that you jump on these forums and complain that you can't carry every song you own on your *phone*, and might complain about how big of an oversight by apple that is. Flash memory ain't cheap, and that is why no other phone has this type of capacity either. This is why Apple makes iPods. See? So you can carry all of your music, and enhance every sneeze with the song that matches your exact feeling at that time.

PS - I don't listen to "top 40" either, but I also don't listen to obscure college indie punk rock. Why? Because I don't like most of it.

I think you guys are being too hard on the OP. Yeah they should have planned a little better and knew their music habits better. But the concern itself is valid. Not everyone has time each day or week to sync and plan their music for later. I especially have no clue what I'd want to listen to. Plus its spontaneous, depending on what mood I'm in or what kind of work I have to get done.

And even though I only have about 15gig of music, and of course I don't listen to all of it at one time, I usually stick it on shuffle and skip half the songs that I'm not in the mood for and end up going through the entire collection in a day (I listen to music commuting and while working, often).

And if I'm going to get a combination device like this, I would like to not still have to carry another ipod with me. But thats only me, most people have lighter listening habits or have time to fiddle with their playlists and plan ahead.

But basically, you have to know yourself and your listening patterns before making a purchase I think.

what i was saying - if you read my post.. is that all the folks that come in here and ask "is an iphone 8GB enough to replace my ipod" and my answers is "if you have a lot of music, DEFINITELY NOT" because its frustrating to relist playlists.. i already said i will be carrying my ipod around with me..

the thing is, lots of people think of cutting down the amount of devices to carry with them.. if you are a music lover.. the iphone CAN NOT do this.

I don't understand the obsession with having your entire music library with you unless you will be away from your computer for more than a few days. Why not just divide your library into a bunch of playlists that take up 5 or 6 gigs on your phone and just change them daily?

I guess to each their own.

Not now and not for everyone. There are plenty of people that the 8gb iPhone works as a replacement cuz they only have that much music. When apple gets to 32gig, that will be even more people...etc.

But yes, your post was simply warning others rather than complaining, it seems.

This is, by far, the most sensible suggestion yet! :D :p

i'd probably say that if you have more than about a thousand songs that you love, your music taste sucks. why? because there aren't that many great songs
