I'm curious about heat... How hot does it get during normal usage? Does it feel about the same underneath as the one you are replacing?

Do you hear the fans at all? If you do, what particular applications are forcing them to rev up?

Thanks!

Photios

Thanks for the pics. I'm still undecided whether its too small for my everyday use. Need to make a trip to the store in hopes of a display model

obvious. worth it?

i think i'm returning mine this weekend to order a high-res online.

Do the antiglares have any sort of "grainy" look to them? I hate glossy, but i hate grainy/dithering displays (most noticeable on white areas) that used to plauge apple's matte screens. It's why I went to glossy a few years back, but I'd like to return to a matte screen if that problem is gone.

Why pay good money to make everything look smaller and less legible on-screen?
Better to put the money towards a 24" display, for when hi res images are actually needed, leaving the 15" to perform more comfortably at normal resolution.

Can you can find out what panel you have by opening the terminal program in OSX and pasting the following command:
ioreg -lw0 | grep IODisplayEDID | sed "/[^<]*</s///" | xxd -p -r | strings -6
and post the result?
Thanks!

thanks for posting!

i was going to go with the matte display but i don't really like the look of the aluminum bezel.

Nice!

The brightness issue is concerning though - I've heard other people saying the same.

Can you try this: boot up in Boot Camp and compare brightness levels there?

Great. Now swap a third party hard drive in there please:D and let us if know if you get any beachballs.

Right now I'm going an optibay and HDD-to-SSD swap; from the looks of things, Apple has designed the motherboard.

List of changes (at least for my machine):
1) Optical drive is now a Panasonic UJ-868
2) HDD is a Hitachi 5K500-B (B is the 9.5 mm version)
3) RAM is now Micron chips; the connector has been flipped as well; notch is on the oppose side now.
4) VRAM (video RAM) is now Samsung; that has been relocated to the top of the motherboard between the fans.
5) Cable changes include, what used to be one cable from the motherboard to to the airport card, there are now two. Also there seems to be 3 wifi cables as well. I'm not sure one is Bluetooth or not.
6) on top of the optical drive is an aluminium bracket; I guess this holds both the airport card and ensures the optical drive does not move; the good thing about this is is the optibay I have does not have mounting holes, so that would be helpful to me.

That's all the changes I can see so far from the side facing the bottom; I'm not going further as I am only swapping out the drives and the RAM.

I will show a picture later of the changes I can see. I'll also answer the questions later (assuming someone else can't).

Also, get your avatar back! I didn't even know it you was you who posted this thread will I looked at the photo and saw your username! I used to know you by your avatar!

I would like to see this too! :)

Thanks for the pictures!

Although I'm still deciding which to eventually get :p

Because some of us have good eyesight and want more pixels per inch? I can't see far distances, need glasses for those, but up close my eyesight is perfect. As a graphic designer, I'd love more pixels, in fact I'd love the 1920x1200 on the 17" in a 15" factor, but this is close. I can fit more room while in Illustrator and in Final Cut Pro or Motion.

Alas, I'm awaiting my 17" i7 MacBook Pro, probably getting it next week (had to order it through my company's supplier of choice, otherwise I'd just go to the Apple Store and pick it up).

A completely asinine comment & nice addition to the conversation.

a "normal resolution" for many of us, is far far higher than 1440x900.

It entirely depends what use or line of work you’re in.

I just picked up a 15" i7 with the anti glare high-resolution display. Here is a preliminary picture to whet your appetite:

Will post more pictures later along with a comparison to the older 15" with anti glare.

Where did you get it from?

Sorry I can't answer this right now; I'm pretty folks how have owned the i7 model since Tuesday can answer this one better.

Definite worth the hassle that I'm going through returning my old machine and everything to get the newer one… if that's what you're asking. It's actually cheaper as well.

Looks great to me; when light is shining onto it directly, I can see the finish (but at least I'm not blind because it's not a mirror).

Does it still have the loose display-hinge?

It's pretty good. I can hold the computer up vertically and the display horizontally out and it will stay that way.

I paid good money for more screen real estate while maintain the portability of the 15" oppose to the 17". Things are clearer to me even though my eyesight does suck.

And I have a 30" external monitor; I don't think $150 is going to pay for a second one. (I wish!)

Nice!

I do no run Windows on this computer, so I cannot answer that, sorry.

Where did you get it from?

Apple Store Shadyside (that's in Pittsburgh, PA)

Can you post a shot of iTunes open with the apps shown?

I don't have an iTunes library on this computer; my iTunes library is on my desktop.

----------

First problem encountered—I cannot boot from my older MacBook Pro volume; looks like I will need to perform an Archive and Install.
